Do you support live theatre in your community?

Is live theatre in your community something you've bought tickets to? I realize some of you live close to London, New York, Chicago and Toronto, where there are many professional shows. Have you seen any? Do you go to them on a regular basis? And, for the people who live outside the major metropolitan areas, do you have an Arts centre that puts on productions? Do you go to them? What about High School/College/University shows?

The reason I'm asking is that I never thought I'd be someone who went to the theatre on a regular basis. Lately, here in the City Fun Forgot, our local playhouse has been putting on some pretty high quality productions, and bringing in some from other places. For example, last weekend, the Dwarf family went to see MacHomer. It's a one-man show, where the performer does MacBeth with all the characters from The Simpsons. It was hilarious. The fellow did a really good job on all the voices, but his Marge as Lady MacBeth was amazing. It was a very inventive way to put a Shakespearean show on, and attract the average citizen. We've also seen recent productions of The Wizard of Oz and The Hobbit, as well as a High School production of Oklahoma! which used students from all over the city. It was eye opening, to say the least, to see the talent from the area!

So, so you support your local theatre projects, or do you travel to major centres to see plays, or do you do both? Or neither? What types of plays have you seen? What type do you like best (comedy, tragedy, drama)?

I love theatre. Well, I definitely like being in plays way more than seeing them. But there are some pretty great theatres in my city actually.. Especially "Profil Teatern", they only have like one or two productions every year or something, but they are truly great.
Then there is the theatre festival, which is once every year. With like sixteen amateur theatre groups... I used to be a part of one of those, but honestly, they're not that great..
Okay, there's a lot of theatres and that kind of stuff here, when I think about it... Both the professional ones and a lot of amateur theatre. But as I said, I'm more a fan of acting, heh.

My favorite thing every year though, is "tolvans spel". Which pretty much means that every year, the twelfth grade at my school have this production... Which sounds pretty lame, I know, a class of about twenty 18 and 19 year-olds, most of them without any acting experience (outside of school). But believe me, it isn't. These productions are almost always surprisingly great. We have this wonderful drama teacher/director, she's like the most amazing person, lol. She can make an actor out of anyone (who is prepared to try and work on it of course). Plus, we do a lot of smaller plays during the twelve years at my school, so most students have at least tried acting in one way or another.
Anyways, what I wanted to say by that is that these plays are great and it's just wonderful to see these young people (well, my age, heh), on stage, being such incredibly actors and being able to bring forth such strong emotions... (Yea I know I sound all silly but I'm just so into this acting/theatre thing at moment, I really love it.)

Oh and my favorite type of theatre is definitely tragedy/drama. (The dark and depressing stuff, mhm.)

I'm probably in a city smaller than you (cuz, you say city, I say town. less than 10,000 with about a thousand surrounding thingys.) The high school's put on Suessical the Musical and...eh..something last year, I didn't go. I meant to but it was over by the time I realized hey that's today. I always forget to look at the part of the paper that has the rest of the region stuff there, but, maybe I'll start. I dunno who I'll drag with me but...

I saw Thoroughly Modern Millie (a musical), a new play, something with dervishes (in la), a reading for...a play that had a philandering king...no..yea..and a writer....
read through a play about a mom and daughter, a few of paula cizmar's plays, uhm, my classmates plays, and mine....we had a few small and one big....and since i dont remember all of them, won't say.

i saw beauty and the beast and something with clocks in 2nd....i read througha few plays in school but..eh....

im partial to comedys and flappers meself, haven't seen a huge amount but, those tickle my fancy most.

I love theatre, playing, seeing, just being around theatre in any way makes me happy. I see quite a lot theatre, mostly amateur theatre though or if I can find some way to get cheap or free tickets 'cause I can't afford it otherwise. I'm soon going to see "Bang bang you're dead", for the first (official anyway) time ever done in swedish..

Also a few days ago I came home from an amateur theatre festival where I saw very much different and great things. They had invited two groups from south africa, very interesting to see plays from foreign countries.

I mostly like drama and tragedy best. I don't know really what it is but comedy always makes me suspicious, over the years though I've learnt that comedy can be great too!

At the moment I don't because I don't have much free time. But in my small hick town we have a local children/adult theatre group, and growing up I was in it and done quite a few productions.

I don't, simply cause...I don't really care. Sounds harsh but honestly, I'd rather be down the pub.

I support my friends if they are doing a play (or gig or whatever they do), although none of my drama friends have ever invited me to a performance. Hmm....

I try to go whenever I get a bit of spare cash. I live in Toronto so I get all of the professional shows, I've also seen a bunch in New York. I've seen virtually every broadway play, I can't get enough of them, especially Les Miserables and Miss Saigon.

Occasionally I go to smaller theatres (though normally when there is someone I know in it.

We don't see much theatre (watching too much telly 😉) but when we do it's usually a pleasure. My Mum lives near Stratford and when we visited last summer we got to see Corin Redgrave as King Lear at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre...brilliant 😀

Hey, BTW, I don't know how close you are to London...dopey, yup that's what dwarf I am today...but Springsteen is playing the Royal Albert Hall on the 27th and 28th of May. And he's awesome too. Two and a half hours, him, a guitar, a harmonica and that's it! Brilliant.

I've been to many shows/live theatre. My family has always taken trips into Chicago and seens plays. Also, I support our local high school yearly productions and musicals. They are fun to watch, and just the fact that it's live is more interesting, because the actors really have to focus.

I work in local media so I can usualy clout my way into not paying for the shows that I go to. So I guess you can't say that I "support" theatre.

Um yea, I don't ever actually pay for theatre either. I only go when I can get tickets through my school or my parents or my friends. And like yesterday, I saw this play (sort of) and I was prepared to pay for it (it was like $5 or something, so it wasn't that big of a deal to me) but the woman who sold the tickets were like "No you used to be in this theatre group you don't need to pay!", which was of course all cool, and that kinda usually happens...
