Do you think BtVS would have been the same if it was more violent?

Compared to a lot of Vampire or supernatural shows these days Buffy is like diet coke. If Buffy aired on a network like HBO do you think it would have made BtvS better? Or do you like it the way it is? Do you think the show would have been more popular?

Personally, I think a few episodes would have been better if they were darker like Supernatural or True Blood, but then Buffy was never about the style, but more the substance (the writing and characters) unlike some shows like True Blood which I feel relies to heavily on sex scenes to draw viewers in and because of it the stories suffer. Or maybe they just have bad writers (sorry TB fans, no mean to diss 😛).

I ask this because I was thinking of trying to get my friend into Buffy, but I worry he'll find it silly. Plus the thoughts of some of the fight scenes being more gorey is pretty cool. Like, think what Angelus would have been like in season 2 with less censorship...maybe they would have shown the puppy scene or Kitty Fantà¡stico and the cross bow in later seasons 😱 😱

Or Willow skinning Warren!

Known how far Joss went with the rape scene between Spike and Buffy it is a little scary...and interesting thinking about what he would have done if he wasn't held back so much.

And I know for a fact most you guys and girls would have loved seeing some Sarah/David/James/Alyson/Nicholas butt! Though you do get to see David's >.>

And I'm cool with it as is. TRUE BLOOD's style fits with itself. But BUFFY's, I don't think would've. Although the sex scenes would've been hot. Especially with Willow.

My main problem with True Blood was all the gore and sex. So no I would not have wanted to see that on Buffy it definitely would have turned me off the show.

Violence in and of itself isn't really a plus or a minus in a movie or tv show for me. As long as it is done properly and within the context of the story line, it can enhance the quality of the show. Poorly done, gratuitous violence doesn't advance the story or help define the characters.

Absolutely not. Like [MENTION=6758]white avenger[/MENTION] said, if it serves a purpose or it advances the storyline, then I'm all for it. I don't need for Buffy to go all "THIS IS SPARTAAAAA!" with the hack and slash. Mixing that with comedy, drama, horror, and everything else is what makes BtVS stand out from the rest. It was an equal balance. Too much of one thing and it's not Buffy, you know?

I think that for a show with the audience that it has, any more violence would have been a bit overkill. We have to bear in mind that Buffy is about growing up and the emotional drama of it as well as killing evil undead things, so I think it's good that there's a balance between the two aspects. Any more on either side would have changed it completely for the worse imo.

Exactly... I don't watch a show for the gore/violence/sex. I watch for the characters. If you have a show that has great characters and great writing, it doesn't matter how gory/violent it is; it will be interesting to watch no matter what. If you rely solely on the sex, blood, and violence, then it gets old fast.

That being said, I wouldn't have minded a little bit more gore in BtVS. It's a show about a girl fighting demons and vampires; there could have been a little more gore, especially in the later, more adult seasons.

I think the fight scenes could have been filmed a little better, but I wouldn't want something like True Blood. The blood, violence & sex in that show seems like its done just for the sake of it.

That being said, I wouldn't have minded a little bit more gore in BtVS. It's a show about a girl fighting demons and vampires; there could have been a little more gore, especially in the later, more adult seasons.

It didn't help that Buffy was on in the "family hour," when excessive violence, gore, and sex weren't allowed. Angel's show aired an hour later so, in theory at least, they weren't quite so restricted in what they could do, though, frankly, I can't tell much difference in the violence level of the two shows.

I think if there was more gore/violence etc, a lot of it's early viewership would have been alienated, and as [MENTION=6758]white avenger[/MENTION] says, it was on in the family hour, so lots of us who watched it when we were young wouldn't have been able to, which would be a huge shame!

Plus, a lot of the member who have children who are into it would probably have bigger qualms about introducing them, which also would be a shame!

I'm personally glad it was how it was since, at 14, I was barely allowed to watch it as it was and if it'd been any more intense I'm certain I would've missed out. I'm sure it could've added to the show in some places and been made gratuitous in others.

Nyeh, there was more than enough violence. They simply stopped short of gore, and that's how I like it fine, tyvm.

For the record, I do like True Blood - but mostly for its dealing with the societal issues of a nonhuman, "monster" race out of the coffin, so to speak... I could do fine with less Gorn on that one, too. Don't mind the boobies much, though. (sw)

Boobies is pretty much the only reason I watch True Blood. There are tons of reasons why I watch and love Buffy. It's great the way it is.

However, if they had less restrictions on what they could put on the show, it certainly would be different but probably in a good way. I mean, Joss and the other wonderful writers and actors would still be involved. As long as the main focus was still on the depth of characters and relationships maybe more violence/sexuality would improve the show.

You have restrictive parents. My dad forced me to watch NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST. 3 when I was 8 years old.

Personally I disagree with this point. Sometimes I wished the fights in BTVS could be more violent. In fact I often wished it could be much more violent. This sounds strange so I will try to explain it.

Of course I am not a fan of violence in generall, not even in films. But Just because out of violence there can develope so great and epic scenes in film. For example the scene inwhich Buffy staked Anja(nka) with a sword or when Willow nearly killed Giles. Those scenes make the viewer breathless, they give the film or the episode voltage. They form the friendship between the characters and mostly the violence change into regretts and sadness. And I like those tragedy scenes as much as those lovely scenes.
I also think that we have to handle with violence every day, so why not showing us where it can bring us. But those scenes can just develope out of violence. And at least, common everybody wants to see a hard fight between Buffy and a demon. 😀
Or that's still my oppinion.
