Do you think Cordelia loved Xander before he cheated on her with Willow in "Lovers Walk"

I think her feelings for xander, and her acceptance of them and allowance for them were huge steps in her path from self centered populartity concerned socialite to the champion and hero she becomes. Also the way she handles herself afterwards show maturity. She cries, mourns the loss of him, burns his picture, and moves on.

Oh, examples I saw in the show that she really did love him... standing up to harmony et all, putting their picture in her locker, wearing the necklace he gave her, and most of all, her speech to the fish monster she thought was xander about how they could still try and make it work.

No. I believe she had strong feelings for him, but not love. It might've been not too far south of it, but it wasn't it.

I do think Cordy loved Xander. That, or she liked him ALOT. If she didn't, her subsequent reactions would have been false. She wouldn't have gave him that ultimatum, or have been extremely grudging towards him after the incident if she didn't love him.

Cordy and Xander's love may not have been as intense as some in of the other relationships we saw on screen, but that doesn't make it any less real. From what we know about Cordy pre-Xander she wasn't really the boyfriend type; so for her to give up so much to be with him speaks volumes on her feelings. Plus, just because you fall in love with someone doesn't mean you will always be in love with that person or that you will end up with them.

I think she loved him before "Lovers walk" but she never realized that for herself or she never accepted the feelings for the "King of Nerds"! I also think that this love had several steps and they begun small and got big and bigger with time!

Cordelia was in love with Xander, but Xander wasn't in love with Cordelia.

Certainly Cordelia loved Xander. He was, while they were together, a very large part of her life, possibly the very center of it. I think that, even after they broke up, she still felt pretty much the same way about him, and I have no problem whatsoever believing that he was her first actual lover, though I see that as happening awhile after graduation, possibly after she announced her plans to move to LA and become an actress. Anyhow, if I were writing their farewell scene, that's the way that it would have happened.

While I do think Cordelia was in love, I do not think this was the only reason she abandoned the Cordettes. I think she was tired of being a phony around them and was sick of them being around a bunch of moronic posers who just did whatever she did. With the Scoobies Cordelia could just be herself.

Her initial attraction to Xander probably had to with the fact that he seemed to be only person in Sunnydale High who stood up to her on a regular basis. Obviously, this wasn't enough in itself. Personally I love Cordy/Xander, the fun factor in that relationship is higher than in all the other Buffyverse relationships combined, IMO. Too bad it's not popular at all among fanfiction writers...

I do think Cordelia loved Xander. It was obvious in season two and three. How she didn't want to give back the locket, and the scene in go fish, and the fact that she was completely devastated when she found him cheating on her. I think that was one of the saddest moments of season three when she was crying and burning his picture.

Well I don't think that can be used as a gauge.... sometimes joss has characters appear to get over incredible loss and heartbreak unbelieveably fast. I do not think that means the feelings were not intense or real.

Yeah, if we judge by the overt reactions the characters can sometimes seem extremely callous and it's very easy for them to move on - like everybody on AtS after Cordelia's death or Dawn who after being very close to Tara in S6 never even mentioned her, let alone mourned her in S7. Heck, even Spike, the drama queen, managed to move on relatively quickly after Drusilla dumped his sorry ass. 😛

Devastated is not the word I would use, but Cordelia's hostility to (oddly enough) Buffy, whom she blamed for "making Xander seem cool", and to "shy girl act" Willow continued pretty much to the end end of S3. I don't think she would make such a big deal if she didn't care much for Xander. It's not like say Willow missing Oz took many more episodes than Cordelia being angry at Xander.

Exactly. I think we really can't gauge the extent to which any character was devastated based on the staying power of the "sadness" we saw onscreen. Plenty of stand-alone, non plot forwarding episodes in season 2 would make you think Buffy basically didn't give two beans about Angelus ruining her life or at least that she'd temporarily forgotten, except for a few moments here and there. Basically, if it didn't have a place in the story line, the writers weren't interested in having their characters dwell.

So I think the clearest indication we have regarding the extent of her sadness/ how much she felt for Xander, is the beginning of "The Wish," when Cordy is sitting on her bed burning photos and looking like her world has truly just fallen apart. That's before she goes back to school and realizes that the Cordettes/guys in school will be treating her like trash for being cheated on by a "dork" like Xander--an indication that at that point, it is simply losing Xander that she is upset about, alone.

I didn't think so until after the events of Lovers Walk, if that makes sense? In the episodes that led up to it, I wouldn't have even had the thought they were at that point, but her reaction to what happened make me wonder. I still wouldn't say for definite so would probably go with the "on the way there" idea.

She was upset about more than just being cheated on, Cordelia had developed way too far to have just been upset about the fact she was betrayed and have no feelings towards the fact it was Xander who had betrayed her. The look on her face when she pretends to be asleep when he arrives at the hospital with flowers is enough to show that and burning the photos that were in her locker etc. All of those actions lead me to believe that her sadness goes much further than the humiliation or base level feelings of betrayal from being cheated on and more to do with the fact that she had incredibly strong feelings for Xander as well as some thoughts that they had some potential before he did what he did.

I think she loved him and I think you could tell before Lover's Walk. She gave up a lot to be with Xander, she was shunned by her friends, she picked Buffy's gang over Harmony. Cordy was too shallow at the time, so to do something like that she must have had very strong feelings for Xander.

Cordelia heavily grieved for two episodes, cryign, moping, and burning pictures of Xander, but then if you observe the rest of season 3 the way she deals is by beign very rude to Xander, its just her way of dealing.
