Do you think Cordy respected Buffy?

I don't think Cordy respected Buffy as much as she needed to. I do think that she was grateful to Buffy for all the good she had done in Sunnydale, and for Cordelia specifically, but I don't think Cordy really had much respect for anyone except herself.

I think by the time they leave high school she respects her, at least when it comes to being the slayer. I don't think she would have agreed to get her friends involved in the uprising on graduation day if she didn't have some respect for Buffy and the job she performs.

But in season 1 I think she's still coming to terms with the whole thing so doesn't really respect her all that much.

Yes. Respect and Jaleousy are a very interesting mixture!
Pfft... Buffy isn't worthy of such an honor. Cordelia is just better than Buffy. I wouldn't say "respect" is the word. Maybe tolerent? Or forgiveness? Possibly was okay with her. Maybe even like! But "respect", I'm not so sure.

Well if you know there is a student or somebody in your job about 2 meters high and he has got muscles like a bear and you know he has the skills to knock everybody out if he wants to...Are you sure you that you have no respect from him? I didn't say that I am talking about the respect that is honorfull, I think it was more the respect that arises when you fear somebody because he or she has something that you haven't. In ths case friends, strenth, a gang. And I disagree with the part that Cordelia was better than Buffy in season 1! In Angel she was a very heroic characer that's right but in season 1?

I always thought Cordy was big enough person to be able to respect Buffy and what she did without necessarily being friends with her. She made fun of the Buffy and the gang to keep her Queen B status, but she did seem somewhat intrigued by what they were doing.

Yes, I do think cordelia respected buffy more over the course of the first season. Buffy did, after all, save her life several times. In "out of mind out of sight" for example, when cordy is talking and buffy is trying to listen in order to hear marcie so she can fight her, buffy snaps at her to "shut up" and instead of getting snarky cordy immediately gets quiet. I think this is respect and acknowledgment of buffy's strength and abilities.

This is exactly what I was referring to.
In Season 1, Cordelia respects Buffy just about as much as a lioness respects a tiger who has just wandered into her territory. She saw, for the first time, someone who was her equal, and perhaps a bit more, but who was out of her natural environment. With the home town advantage, Cordelia was a little apprehensive, but not really feeling threatened.

By the second year, Cordelia had seen just how powerful Buffy was, and certainly she could respect her physical power, but she knew beyond a doubt by then that she did have certain advantages over Buffy, especially at the beginning of the year. The advent of Angelus, and the chaos that he brought along with him was probably the first time that Cordelia had ever been directly affected by Buffy's world. Before that, it was something that she could just walk away from whenever she wanted to. Angelus changed all that.

In Season 3, "The Wish," Cordelia got to see first hand what Sunnydale, and her own life, could have been like if Buffy hadn't ever come to Sunnydale. THAT, I believe was when Cordelia Chase, Sunnydale debutant first began to actually appreciate, admire, trust, and unconditionally respect, Buffy Summers, Slayer.

And somewhere along the way, I believe that they actually became friends.

I think Cordelia just didn't "get" Buffy, she wasn't really capable of respecting her to begin with, I just don't think her emotions stretched that far.

However as the show progressed, I think Cordelia and Buffy established a mutual respect for each other.

I don't think Cordy respected Buffy to begin with. However as time went on I think after all Buffy had done for her it would have been hard for Cordy to have not shown her some respect. I think over time their respect for each other grew. I think in the end Buffy should have had a lot of respect for Cordelia but I'm not sure that's really portrayed in the show
