If so... Did he watch games with Spike when they were in his apt? What was his favorite team? Player? Do you think he watched other sports like baseball, american football, basket or even hockey? 😱

Go ahead, discuss!

TOME YOU'RE TOME NOW!!!!!!!!!
I doubt he wanted to sit around watching sports but if he did I can't picture him watching American football. If anything he and Spike would watch Soccer 😛

But I bet they just cried over Passions together haha

It's called football, fool! And Giles crying with Spike over a tv show? That would have been something, lmao! 😀

agreeing with Min! Your banner is awesome :D
Nah, as Ripper he was probably "above" sports and as Rupert Giles he probably never had a desire because he never participated or watched as a kid.

Though my Grandma never played baseball for all I know and she friggen loved the Toronto Blue Jays. Watched them all the time.

Well we can't know for sure if he never participated or watched as a kid... Sure he had to study and prepare for his Watcher's duty, but you won't tell me he didn't have any spare time. Also, why would he have a tv in his apt if he didn't watch? 😉 Unless he was watching those tv quizzes all the time, lol.

I'm telling you he was a passions fan long before spike :p
I'm thinking that since he went to elite schools and came from a posh background that he possibly played rugby through school. I can't really see him as a football fan for some reason. Although possibly watched the FA cup every year.

He does mock American football by negatively comparing it to rugby in Some Assembly Required, so if he didn't play rugby, he probably at least watched it.

I was going to point that out too.
No, he can't have fun! Almost never, he's always too serious and uptight.
Also, it's SO not who he is and what he likes. He has other "fun" hobbies such as cross-referencing, drinking tea....

Spike isn't the football kind of guy either.

I don't think he cares about football. He's soaps kinda guy. 😀 By the way, football is played by foot a.k.a. soccer. American football should be called secure rugby. 😛

That's funny. I'm not sure he's a soaps kinda guy either. He watched it with Spike all summer, but I don't know if he's really into it. On the other hand, you might be right. I mean, why would he watch something with someone he hates for an entire summer 😀

Maybe Spike insisted to watch it and Giles had no choice. And after an episode, he got hooked. :p
Ahh Icarium brought up the point I was going to! Yea, Giles' is making fun of Americans saying something like he thought is was ridiculous that we feel, "compelled to strap on 30lbs of protective gear just in order to play rugby."

I think it might be fair to assume he dabbled a bit in rugby/soccer/football his day with friends, but I don't think Giles cared much more than that. Maybe he might root for the Manchester United soccer/football but he doesn't seem like a big sports guy. Definitely more of a soaps fan like we've seen, not an avid sports fan.

If anything they both watched Passions when he was there! XD

For reasons unknown I always thought he'd have been a bit of an Aston Villa fan. I have no reason why.

Like Cait said, I can definitely see him having an interest in the FA Cup. Especially during the 1970s.

Hmmm, maybe... he does mention rugby, though that doesn't neccessarily indicate that he's a fan of it, merely that he knows what it is.

It's possible he's a football fan, I wouldn't discount him as being "not the type"- a LOT of people in the UK are, to varying degrees. My boyfriend watches loads of matches, and he's not exactly a sporting "type". Saying that, I'm not a fan at all, I find it a bit dull, so by the same token, I wouldn't have him down as definitely liking football just because he's British...

I don't know that he ever discusses what he likes to watch, apart from stuff he watches with Spike XD I may be wrong, though... I know he mentions his music collection a few times, I suspect that was more of a passion for him in his younger days than sports.

British guy here who doesn't watch football at all
Football is like chess on a pitch, and we know he plays chess ("Superstar"). IMO football is something of a cerebral sport, both to watch and to play. Although my first guess would be Giles as a rugby fan, I wouldn't rule out him being a football fan too. He had a flat in Bath in season 6 - what would be, geographically, the closest EPL team? Maybe that's who he rooted for.

Well, he mentions Manchester United as one reason for liking the world in Becoming.
