Do you think Joss will milk the comic book world for as much as he can?

Not to be too incendiary, but what I mean is - I think Joss is a good storyteller. I bet he would be happy if the series had ended, and ended permanently, when it did (or maybe after a few more episodes as originally intended).

In any case, I notice how the Buffy comic book franchise has branched out all over, creating lots of stories, no big story arcs like there were in the TV series... but more typical comic book kind of stuff, dialog, themes (from my perspective anyway).

Do you think Joss will just keep it going? Sell it off to someone else? Or decide, eventually, "Well, I think we've had enough Buffy" and bring some kind of final ending to the mythos (either through a "Happily Ever After" theme, or something else)?

It seems to be dragging, and as we all know, some comic book heros just go on forever and ever without end (Spiderman, Superman, etc.).

I'm still enjoying Buffy's story and life journey very much.

I hope it continues for years.

So far in S9 Buffy Summers is only about 24.11 years old. In S8's The Long Way Home she was 23.10 years old.

My main complaints are that each issue needs to be longer and more detailed, and to come out more often.

S8 had a seasonal arc. S9 is tied together by the ripples and reprecussions of S8. I think that everything is on track since they are living in the precurser to the Fray world, we've seen how people are settling into having found out in S8 that the paranormal is real and amongst them, Angel back on the path of trying to atone with the added burden of Buffy being the one he feels he's wronged the most, Willow's entire arc seems to be about regaining her magick and Aluwyn and we got the set up for both in S8, Spike is refocusing on Buffy after straying on AtS, etc.

I don't think the themes have changed. I nearly cried when Buffy---in a one-armed android body---walked through the beautiful house with the large kitchen and a room for a nursery. She felt more like a freak and trapped in a cycle of abnormal misery than ever, especially knowing that a robot-in-her-body had been able to integrate with society and create a happy thriving life in a way she never could. Xander & Dawn trying to take a step back from the paranormal to create a normal life together. That look of disappoint when Buffy realized she wasn't pregnant, really driving home that she was only going to get an abortion because she thought it was the right thing to do and had she been in a stable place she would've treasured being a mother. Packing up her belongings when her new friends kick her out of the apartment (something she knows well having been kicked out by her mother in S2 and her sister & friends in S7). Willow holding so much resentment towards her for not having her magickal abilities anymore and Kennedy flat out accusing her of being the reason Giles is dead.

I think that, as long as the project continues to interest him, make money, and, of course, as long as his health allows, yes, Joss will continue with the Buffy story, or at least the BuffyVERSE story, as long as there are fans to enjoy it. At the moment, that universe is located entirely in the comic book media, so that's where he is, and I think that, his schedule remaining the same as it now is, that's where it's going to stay. I can't imagine him selling his rights to the franchise the way that George Lucus sold"Star Wars," because, frankly, I can't imagine anyone offering him enough money to make any sort of tempting offer. Buffy has a strong, loyal, fan base, but it's also a SMALL fan base, as compared to Luke Skywalker.

Somewhat off the subject, I believe that we will someday see another vampire slayer on TV or the movies, but if it is Buffy or any of the other original characters, new, younger actors will play the roles.

I don't think that he is milking franchise with those comics, I don't think that they geve him much in term of money after all it's only what, 24 thousand copies? And I don't think that after "The Avengers" he care about money anyway, now he is big name hollywood director! I think only sensible explanation why he is still making those comics is because copyrights issues. I'm only speculating but I think that as long as he is publishing "Buffy" comics Kuzuis can't make Buffy reboot. I think that this is his goal. This same happened with Roger Corman's "Fantastic four" studio would lost rights to FF, so they have to make a movie - no one said that they have release it. 😉 So that's my theory... I think that he is doing it because he want to make his own Buffy movie in the future. Because let's let's be honest those comic are not that good, in fact they are quite bad.

I hope they don't "milk" the franchise for all its worth. Once the story gets stale, then the story should end.

I don't think so... Looking at the past, Joss isn't really a milker. There are multiple comics from each of his franchises but it's not like they're just crap that thrown out there as a blatant cash grab from hardcore fans. I think each is pretty quality work, especially to a Whedon/Buffy fan.

That being said I would be happy beyond words if Buffy continued for a decade. I figure it could go one of three ways:
1. It becomes stale, people stop buying it, Buffy slowly dies.
2. It becomes amazing and everyone starts buying it (wishful thinking)
3. Stories stay between at-par and almost-great for ever and ever (with a hopeful 5-star story every once in a while) and the super-fans (us) keep reading.

Obviously hoping for point 2.

EDIT: Also, I forgot about the whole Fray aspect. There is an end in sight for Buffy, we just don't know when that happens. We do know that the "big event(s)" leading up to Fray and the future-Buffyverse happen during Buffy's tenure as Slayer (obviously) though, so it's not like there's unlimited time.

Joss doesn't have the ability to sell off the franchise, because he doesn't own it... Fox does.

It's never been in Joss's nature to "milk" things. In fact, he's often frustrated fans by not milking them enough.

I'm pretty sure that when he decides he's done with Buffy's story, he'll end it, regardless of whether there's still money to be made off it.
