Do you think you could ever "outgrow" Buffy?

I came across someone recently, who upon discovering how much I loved the show, said that she too used to be a tremendous fan, but felt that she'd grown out of it.

I thought that was an interesting choice of words, as it almost implied it's a "kiddie" show that age and experience will eventually override and suddenly make it less appealing.

I understand that people change and lose interest in things...but to me "growing out" of something means it would only be entertaining or enjoyable for a specific age range. BTVS, while featuring young characters, was never really a "kid" show...kids could certainly watch and enjoy it, but adults are able to watch it in a much more "active" way and appreciate the subtext and strong writing.

So do you think someone can "outgrow" Buffy?

I think I could 'outgrow' Buffy but I don't think it has anything to do with it being a 'kiddie' show.

We get older each day, our taste grow and mature over time, what I like today I might not tomorrow for whatever reasons.

Honetsly? No. I don't watch the show very often anymore, I just don't have the time to do it. Why I keep going back has alot to do with BB, someone will remind me of something I have forgotten and I'll suddenly be filled with this brand new vigour for all things Buffy. As life moves on I can see myself having less time for the show, however, when I do eventually sit down and rewatch it every few years (and I will) I know I will fall in love with the show all over again. I plan and sharing this show with my children and grandchildren so I don't think there is much chance of me outgrowing it.

Also, I think the fact that I have yet to come across a show that even remotely interests me the way the Buffyverse does ensures that I won't be growing out of my Buffy shoes anytime soon.

I suppose it depends on what you get out of it. If you look no further than the monsters and special effects then I suppose people may well grow out of it. For me though, I watch it a lot! So on almost every viewing I notice something else -such as another tiny part of an analogy. I also have such affection for the characters that I'll always have a nostalgia and love for Buffy no matter how wrinkly I get.

Not a chance. My reason being that Buffy is such a great show, for all different age groups. It's got the best writing and I love how the characters grew and matured with each season. I fully intend on giving my daughter my seasons when she gets older, so she can watch it and appreciate it like I do.

I think there are certain things in one's life that serve a purpose for a while, and then once that purpose has been served, the thing isn't necessary anymore. And once it isn't necessary anymore, it can seem redundant to keep it around. That doesn't mean whatever it was is necessarily childish, moreover that the individual has recognized and appreciated it's usefulness in their life but is willing to let it go to make room for other things.

I don't really think people "outgrow" Buffy in the sense of getting too old/mature for it. After all, there are very few, if any shows that are more mature or intelligent than it. I do, however, think that some people sort of just stop watching and wind up forgetting about it, then interpret that as growing out of it.

But i can see to other people how its "only a show" (GAH!) but fairy snuff and they go on and watch other things, which we do too but keep the BtVS love alive.

I don't think I'll ever be able to look back and think, "Wow, why did I used to watch that?" However, I know there are many people that say they "used to like it". I don't understand it. Personally, Buffy'll always be with me, no matter what.

I've always thought of BtVS as an "adult" show projected to a teen audience. It was always a show, I feel, that was meant to mature with it's audience.
And AtS was never meant to be for teens, as far as I know, it was projected to an adult audience.

That is an interesting choice of words, though. I guess at some point I could be "sick" of Buffy just simply because I've watched it so many times and discussed everything so much...but I doubt it 🙂 There's always more to learn.

"Outgrow" implies to me that there is some sort of age limit or time frame after which the basic themes Joss envisioned and he various actors portrayed no longer hold any interest or value. As probably the oldest member of the Boards, I can only say that, if there is such a time, I haven't reached it yet. I have found other interests, certainly, and other shows that I enjoy watching, but that in no way means that I do not remain a fan of Buffy and the universe that Joss created.

I have definitely outgrown Buffy,

I am taller than her, I weigh more, probably bigger in all facets!
Although I hope her wobbly danglies are bigger than mine, I prefer to call them my chest muscles.
And my six pack is a lot better than hers, it should be, it's been covered with a bit of fat for years now!.

I bet 60% of the male population have bigger boobs than her...not because they're fat, per se, but because SMG is flat as a pancake...

As for my views on this subject, since I didn't really say...I believe if you TRULY love something, if something TRULY means a lot to you at one point in your life...it always will...perhaps just to a different degree as the years go on.

I'm actually putting this time capsule together as sort of a personal project...I plan to open it again in twenty years. So far, I have various newspaper clippings, some of my writing, photographs, and I'm thinking about putting some Buffy in there too..

Since I only recently really got into the Buffyverse, I can't really say how it will be in the future. There are loads of other shows I also like. But, some already mentioned it, Buffy (and Angel) are shows for every age. In a way, everyone can get some fun out of it. Therefore I think I will never outgrow it. I might loose interest after some time, but then, when I watch it again, I will be drawn back in completely before the opening credits end.

I think I could outgrow Buffy. I think that a few years after Season 9 ends, I will start to grow tired, and Real Life will catch up with me, keeping me occupied until I almost forget what it was like to be obssessed. But I also believe, that no matter how long it takes, if given a chance (for example, if I get a fever and have to stay home from work/studies and the only thing to do is watch DVDs) I could fall back in love with the shows and comics.

I'd agree with the jolly paperdoll. I started watching the show some time in 2004 and I would watch it together with my father, who allready had watched all of it before. So it took us quite some time until 2005. I loved every moment of the show, but at the same time I couln't go near it again right away. We recently though about having another go at the show from the very beginning again, but yeah, we are watching too many shows at the same time, so it gets difficult. However, a certain housemate, with odd love interests regarding Angel and Cordelia, drew me back into the show. I'll definetly will never grow to old. I suspect, in my old days, it will be even more fun, as I've forgotten must of the plot, so it will be all new to me again 😀

A few friends of mine though it odd that I was watching Buffy and Angel, because they thought it was something for teenaged girls, but this is just general ignorance. They show has so much more to offer, with respect to age, gender and what ever else. More people should be brought to the cause of Buffiness.
