More seriously, although passing references to other IPs that are mostly only noticeable to fans of them can be fun (although can cause problems), blending together different IPs that are too different and trying to work them together can fail very badly.

In truth, old Trek had a lot of nomadic gods, the Doctor would fit in as well as they did. There was a comic book cross over about fifteen years ago between Matt Smith era Who and Next Gen trek where the Borg and the Cybermen teamed up. Naturally, the Cybermen, as barely functional refugees constructed from spare parts and clinging to the margins of human civilization were naturally able to subvert and overwhelm the Borg.

We're now reaching peak desperation in an attempt to save IP's that have been tanked; Disney is bringing back RDJ as Doctor Doom and the Russo Bros. to direct. Russell and/or the media around him are throwing out weird ideas to generate any kind of fan buzz; it's like some kind of heat death caused by unoriginality.


I look forward to the announcement that Mark Hamill will be cast as Darth Plaugis in the new Rey Palpatine movie. Get excited!

Thoughts on the season premiere? I will be honest, it kind of lost me. I do like that the new companion wants to have none of the space time adventures and just wants to get home. It’s interesting that there’s a time lock on returning her home, it appears. But I hope that the eventual payoff isn’t a letdown.

That sounds like it is taking inspiration from the classic series. If you watch that, companions were lucky to end up back on the same planet, let alone the same time, and the Doctor had pretty much no ability to get them there even without a time lock.
 
Watched it. Mostly; message, message, Marvel quip, insufferable companion, Marvel quip, media buzzword, marvel quip, 'Planet Of The Incels', The Doctor laughing at somebody dying, season-long mystery built around the companion, get invested!

This IP is dead. RTD and Gatwa are already confirmed to both be moving on to other, brighter things. Best outcome? Probably hiatus for the show. Worst will be cancelation.

The original source for this was Murdoch's populist rag for the semi-literate, The Sun. The BBC has denied this non-story. From The Radio Times website -

It said "Introducing Billie Piper in the end credits, which makes me believe there is more story to tell. I don't know if this will be more oriented to specials, like the 2023 specials, or if it will be a full season, but it doesn't seem to be over. Contrary to the gossip about the show.

Interestingly, I did hear about the possibility of regeneration in an article before I watched the finale, which even named Billie Piper as the next potential Doctor, in case Ncuti really was leaving. With the little information about the bigeneration mythology, and Bad Wolf storyline in the season 1 finale, there's a possibility that this was a fake regeneration and we are actually seeing a version of The Rose Doctor, with the possibility of getting David Tenant back as Fourteen, where we will see a few adventures of them together before they regenerate together in to the true Sixteenth doctor.

Sorry for all the spoiler tags, but it's the only way to put my thoughts without spoiling the end of the episode.

As for the story itself:
I really liked the callbacks to all of the people the Doctor has met throughout these past two seasons. I love that the Time Hotel was significant to helping the Doctor save the day. I think of the 2023 specials as a mini season, so all 3 "seasons" of Davies' second go round culminated quite well in this episode. But I'm kind of over all the action taking place at Unit. I think it's time to put Unit to rest for a bit, and if the show continues, it would be good to expand outside of Unit. We got a whole new series in "Torchwood" due to Davies trying to go outside the box with established canon. We did get Unit back as a regular background support for the Doctor starting with Series 3, but I liked that Series 2 set up a new organization separate from Unit. I'm not saying we need a new government organization, however. I'd like to see the Doctor face villains without Unit's backup.

I loved that the Rani came back, which tied to Mel's storyline from the classic series. This was a lovely way to recognize Mel's history with the Doctor. Having the Rani and Mel talk to each other to recognize that was a nice part of the episode.

I also like that Ruby was the primary companion in this. She was still the special girl, who saw outside of the Wishverse and realized something was amiss, even when the Doctor couldn't. I think this really showcases how close she was with the TARDIS and calls back to her story as one of the Doctor's "Impossible Girls" (like Amy Pond and Clara Oswald kind of were during the Moffat era). No shade to Belinda, but I think Ruby and the Doctor just fit better. Ruby and the Doctor are clearly best friends. This is why Donna and the Doctor were so popular, and Amy and the Doctor were so popular. There was no sense of coupling (like Rose and Ten, or Yaz and Thirteen) or unrequited love (like Martha and Ten).

You can see that Davies really did try to set up a two-season thread, and there was careful planning the whole way. I didn't catch that Poppy was one of the babies from Space Babies. Having Mrs. Flood be a bigenerated form of the Rani was a great way to add to this mythology, and call back to the threads from series 15.

I didn't understand why the Rani and the Doctor think they are the only two Time Lords left? The Master is still out there, albeit apparently in the golden tooth from the Toymaker. But I hope this also opens the door for bringing back other important Time Lords from the classic series. We have seen that there are various ways that Gallifrey has been restored over the past 20 years, so I hope that we see more Time Lords that somehow escaped the Time War.

There is still clearly a lot of story left with the Doctor. This season's episodes didn't hit as hard as last seasons. But I think the social commentary has been hampering the show. When I think back to my favorites New Who series, its the ones that showcase the Doctor on various worlds and adventures, without necessarily trying to make a statement. I think we've kind of gotten sidetracked in media needing to say something in the last 5 years or so, and I would like a true escape from our current reality, so I would love it if the show continued, for the next series to lean into adventures and less into commentary.

I haven't watched season 2, I felt too let down by the season 1 finale but has it been good? I think I'll watch again if
Billie Piper is truly going to be the 16th Doctor

I can see that thought. But for the most part the 2023 specials were well received. It also appears from the finale with the Omega Time Lord (explained by the Rani as the first Time Lord) that Davies is subtlety straying away from the Timeless Child nonsense established by Chibnall. And Davies has been intentional about linking new series to the Classic series, so I like that aspect of his new era.

I think if DW can steer away from the blatant social commentary and lean into the history of the show, while also seeking new adventures, mythos and time periods not yet explored, Davies can course correct.

But the (for lack of a better term) “woke” aspects of series 14 and 15 are what are making viewers leave. There can still be subtle social commentary, Doctor Who has always done that. But the series has always worked best when it made you THINK about societal issues rather than slap you in the face with them.

Have you seen Davies in his interviews? Why would he course correct when he absolutely believes that he's doing the right thing. He's writing reality as he knows it.


Anyway I'll answer my own question, Chibnal may've damaged the franchise with 1 poor iteration of the Doctor, the show could've survived that because it has done in the past. The Timeless Children was terrible but should've been explained away immediately as a scheme by the Master to break the Doctor; Galefrey isn't a dead husk, etc

But Davies has added 2 negative iterations on top of that one, I disagree that Tennant 2.0 was well-received, people may've come back for that bit of stunt-casting but most they left soon after.
And then we got Gatwa...who was basically Captain Jack Harkness without the cool coat, charisma and space gun. All restraint from Davies was gone, he went from fun and gay to queer, hectoring and tiresome. He's run out of ideas but not things to say, he has many, many things to say about the way he sees things and has used DW as a blatant vehicle

Might help if the show started recruiting sci-fi writers and/or DW aficionados to write the scripts rather than the lot they've gone for over the past years.
The only 'subtle commentary' I saw was in the Eurovision Song Contest episode which was about Israel/Palestine, and it was pretty obvious parallel.


Personally I think the show needs a rest. And then a refresh regarding how the Doctor's 'extended life' is warping his memory or something and the last couple of regenerations were a fever dream/alien sickness/The Master screwing with him' or something.
If they delete everything post-Peter Capaldi then the show might be salvageable and bring back the fans. You could even do a female Doctor again but get it right this time with better writing and an actress whose more passionate about the role.
 
Doctor Who Dead...Is this true?

I haven't really followed the show since Jodie Whittaker was announced as the Doctor. For me, a female Doctor was simply jumping the shark and proved the creators had no backbone in defending the character anymore, that Dr. Who would fall victim to the same affliction which had ruined Star Wars in 2015 (and so many others). Though I did give her a chance, watching a couple episodes here and there, all that proved was on top of betraying the character, they cast someone totally wrong for the part, and had painfully unwatchable scripts.

I had returned with some hopeful but reserved optimism when RTD was slated to return to the show, perhaps he could right the ship and undo the Chibnall years' damage. Instead, the 60th Specials were pretty awful, and even David Tennant & Neil Patrick Harris' star power couldn't save them. The new Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) turned out to be so unbelievably bad imo, both the actor and the scripts, that it actually got me to go and check out again a few more of Jodie's episodes, which seemed almost downright decent by comparison (and by that I mean no better than middling/average, which for her era is a win. Specifically the Nikola Tesla episode was alright.) At least she's British, at least she tried to be the Doctor (even if she failed) and at least the show had some resemblance to the old formulas of what it's supposed to be like. I gave up on the new Disney run after about 3 or 4 episodes. Ncuti can't act, the writers can't write, and it's totally childish with musical numbers. It doesn't even feel like the same show, like this has anything at all to do with Doctor Who. And then the drag queen popped out of the piano. Dear lord, make it stop!


Anyway, just as quickly as the new guy came, I hear he's now already gone? The blonde companion--Ruby was it?--left after one year (gee I couldn't fathom why, poor girl seemed actually excited to be in Doctor Who when she was cast, till she discovered the quality of what she was actually asked to do on set.). Now the following year Ncuti Gatwa himself is ditching ship, and so is Russel T Davies, and apparently this is it. Doctor Who, after nearly a decade of disgusting cultural vandalism of one of sci-fi television's greatest icons, is at long last going to be put out of its misery. Cancelled, or at least shelved indefinitely for an extended period.

This is what I've heard. Is it true, or just a rumor?

And for everyone, is this news you welcome, or meet with sadness? Perhaps both?

Edit: Looks like it's cancelled only in the sense that Disney is done with this money-loser. But Amazon on the other hand has just struck a new deal,

Well sh*t. Looks like the nightmare never ends. It just regenerates. If only they had followed their own rules and just called it quits after 12 lives...
