"Doctor who exclusive: Tardis to be redesigned for arrival of new Time Lord Matt Smith

The Tardis is being completely redesigned in time for the arrival of the new Doctor Who.
BBC bosses have given the green light to completely refit the interior for a radical new look.
They will also improve the quality of the police box exterior for the opening episode featuring new Time Lord Matt Smith.
Production sources say the decision is being taken by new Doctor Who writer and executive producer Stephen Moffat, who wants to distance himself from previous show chief Russell T Davies.
He wants the arrival of Matt Smith to signify a new era, and also to withstand Doctor Who being in high definition. A source said: "It will be the most hitech, intricate Tardis ever."
Smith, 26, who will become the 11th Time Lord next year, will be the youngest actor to play the 903-year-old doctor."


What would you like the new look Tardis to be like?

I don't often say this.....but what she said!
I'm not too fussed as long as its cool looking - I don't mind them 'changing the desktop' BUT they better not mess too much with the outside!

I do feel though that if Steven Moffat wants to distance himself from Russell then he should change the Doc..ohhh or change the prod tea...ohhh.

Steven needs to think more about the story rather than the aesthetic.

One thing he can do though is NOT have Daleks/Cybermen and maybe come up with a strong, sustainable villain.

I loved the Daleks in season 1
I liked the Daleks in season 2
I loathed the Daleks in season 3
I couldn't have cared less for the Daleks in season 4 - THOUGH I adored Davros and the 'Children of times' reaction to them.

I just think the 'old enemies' have been overdone.
I understood the initial use but to be honest it felt like Russell started to rely on them.

I know you're agreeing with me Buffy Summers I just feel this is something I have to rant at everytime it comes up!

I completely agree on the Daleks and old enimies being overdone. By now I'm WAY beyond tired of the Daleks - the really have no impact at all anymore
Oh how i am going to miss David Tennant...he's redefined the standards of Dr Who...he was simply amazing...and not too bad looking which is never a bad thing 😀

To be perfectly honest i don't like the sound of a "hitech, intricate tardis." ..i liked the little blue box.

Although i do get the idea about it representing and reinforcing this whole new era...although it is either going to work or be a complete disaster in my opinion...and i sooo hope it's the first option.

actually, im sick of the daleks myself. but i love this show too much to care either way.

how do i feel about the Time and Relative Dimension In Space machine? i feel it could use some upgrades. i feel some of the pipes and wires hanging all over the place seems a bit unorganized and insect-like. i want to see something more sophisticated and unique.

Every Doctor as redefined the Doctor!

Thats what they do and why no two Doctors are the same.
No offence meant to you Aly Fan, this is a general statement, but I love how the 'young' people or the people new to Doctor Who make comments like this in regards to Tennant.

Yes he was 'brilliant' and yes he helped rejuvenate the series (though people always seem to forget that it was Christopher Eccleston that brought it back as a rip-roaring success) BUT thats all.

Also, trust me, no one will change it from a 'little blue box' - that IS the Tardis. What they are doing is changing the inside, which is something that has happened often through-out the history of The Tardis.

Love or hate him, thats actually irrelevent, I was commenting on how people attribute the success of New Who to Tennant, forget that Eccleston was the Doctor that started the new love of Who.

I do, only marginally, prefer Tennant, but I LOVE Ecclestons Who.

No more blue post box? Daarn, I can no longer walk through London laughing everytime I see a police box.
As long as the new TARDIS is cool, that's fine with me. I don't like all the renevations they're doing with the show though. I know it's a new Doctor and everything but I don't want a new TARDIS, too. Next they'll be changing the name of the show...

Seriously won't be an issue and maybe you should do some checking into the history of the Tardis before you make comments!

OK, PEOPLE!!!!!

They will NOT change the Tardis from being a Blue Police Box.
Will people who don't understand certain aspects of the show or who is now in charge please listen to reason.

Jeez. People are beginning to sound like Daily Mail readers.

Oh, misunderstood that part. :/ And the name changing part was a joke, 'kay? geez.
I'm seriously used to the TARDIS as it looks now, because I only started watching with the new Who. I haven't seen much of the original series, because, well, it stopped before I was born and it was enver really big here, so not on TV either. I am quite sure they're not gonna completely change everything, but I will miss the bit amateurish or cheap, or whatever you want to call it, look it had. It matched the outside, AND it made for some fun moments.

Also, I'm a bit curious about how they're gonna bring the change. Would they just start the new season with a brand new interior and pretend it's always been like that? Or would they make a bit of a story around it? (I dunno, giant space bugs ripping the place apart)
 
I'm kind of hoping that this is Steven Moffat saying 'Russell, you're killing off Ten, why not go out in style and destroy the inside of the Tardis in the process'.

It has got to be the result of a big explosion or something!
 
Experience tells me to be cautious about a Doctor Who story from a British tabloid, starting with the word "Daily", and referencing an anonymous source, but this one sounds like there's something to it.

The Telegraph thought enough of the story to pick it up. I know them from science stories. I kind of trust them.

The intergalactic vehicle will continue to look like a 1960s police box from the outside but the interior is being given a complete overhaul before its newest occupant, the actor Matt Smith, takes over as the Time Lord from David Tennant.

Others suggest this revamping the interior might have to do with the fact Doctor Who will be filmed in High def next season where there's more need for detail.

Doesn't bother me personally. What would, would be if they changed the core character of the Tardis. The way it's temperamental, or how even when it screws up it seems to have some kind of tricky agenda, or the Doctor/Tardis kind of spiritual love connection.
 
I'm guessing it will just be a result of the new regeneration as The Doctor and the TARDIS have a symbiotic/telepathic link.

And yes, the real reason for the revamp is about HDTV, as was stated in the story from the British tabloid starting with the word "Daily"
 
Personally I'll embrace the idea of a new interior look for the TARDIS, although of course I agree with Al that aesthetics must never become the focus of show. But really, I trust Steven Moffat not to let that happen.
I wonder how easily I'll adjust though. As a relative newcomer to the show (been watching since 2006) I've only watched a handful of "Classic" Who (which haven't even included very much TARDIS time), so as far as I'm concerned the current TARDIS design, is the TARDIS design.
