Documentary Recommendations

Anyone got any? I feel like all I watch nowadays or have any interest in are documentaries! I've seen so many I've ran out of ideas. I'll watch just about anything, about any subject matter.

It's good? Yeah. That's my answer.

I've found something to take away from it in each instance. When I need alittle inspiration too, it can be helpful. Design is One about the Vignelli's is a good one too.. not as good as Helvetica.
 
Here's another review... reading it should just get you excited. I would post my own review but last time I did that I was told my review was wrong.

I love documentaries. Especially about nature. If your interested in that, just watch everything that Richard Attenborough has ever made. Here are also some other recommendations:

  • Madagascar - about the incredible animal and plant life on the island that has been isolated from the rest of the world for 90 million years
  • Long Way Round - Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman take a trip around the world on their motorcycles
  • The Thin Blue Line - "A film that successfully argued that a man was wrongly convicted for murder by a corrupt justice system in Dallas County, Texas." (taken from imdb.com)
  • Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief - title says it all
  • Sound City - about a famous recording studio, in which some of America's most influential records were produced
  • Iron Maiden: Flight 666 - about the band's world tour in 2008 on which they played 23 shows in 13 countries around the world in 45 days. Even for non-fans!
  • Charles Darwin and the Tree of Life - about how Charles Darwin came up with his theory of evolution and how we know it's true (can be found on dailymotion.com, I think)
  • The Cove - "Using state-of-the-art equipment, a group of activists, led by renowned dolphin trainer Ric O'Barry, infiltrate a cove near Taijii, Japan to expose both a shocking instance of animal abuse and a serious threat to human health." (taken from imdb.com)

Just wanted to add to any onlookers, please never, ever watch a documentary called Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father. Possibly the most heartbreaking piece of film I've ever had to endure.

No, the title doesn't say it all. I've oft wondered why is it called 'going clear'? Is that a scientology term?

Yes, it is. But you don't need to know that in order to get what the film is about.

Does your interest include DVD's in the style of a documentary?
 
There's always "This is Spinal Tap", the mockumentary about a fictitious rock music band. Some musicians have said they cringe when they watch it because it is too close to the truth.
 
Nope.
I mean Amazing Caves. The search for extremophiles featuring the music of The Moody Blues.
Various DVD's about Myths and Legends of Britain.
London from the Air.
Ghosts of the Abyss (about the Titanic)
Also look at the DVDD's for Imax theatres.
 
If you like Stephan Fry and might be interested in him as a person you might like The Secret Life of a Manic Depressive!! It also features a few other famous Actors/Musicians in it as well.
 
@Taake "Your favorite font? 😛" No, I am not really a fan of it in particular. I am really starting to ship Oswald and Fedra Sans for what it's worth.

Yeah I've seen that. 🙂 I had no idea Carrie Fisher was a manic depressive until I watched it! Manic depression sounds absolutely exhausting. Poor souls.

Rammstein have a song about that guy. It's a good song, and the lyrics are, obviously, very disturbing.
