Documentary Recommendations

Three documentaries worth looking at:

Truth or Dare - Madonna
Some Kind of Monster - Metallica
I'm Your Man - Leonard Cohen

The question you might find yourself asking is, why were the first two released? Truth or Dare makes Madonna look like a bully. All her crew have to play the game and it clearly goes beyond the bounds of what people should be asked to do.

Some Kind of Monster shows how much the members of Metallica did not get along and how the creative process suffered. In the end, it looks like they righted the ship but this should have been an episode of "Jackass".

I'm Your Man is excellent and shows Leonard in a good light where he is confident enough to make fun of himself but always interesting. It shows there was more going on in NYC than just the Brill Building sound.

Even movies about music, whether fictional or real, seem to be a cut above the average movies. The genre doesn't seem to matter that much - Amadeus was as good as Almost Famous or Rockstar because the music-making process and the people who play the soundtrack of our lives are inherently interesting.

NOFX: Backstage Passport - because why wouldn't you want to see the band trying to play in uncharted territory for punk rockers and getting smashed and causing chaos along the way.

Oh man, I love NOFX. Well, I loved them loads as a teenager, fair to say I don't listen to them as much as I used to. I didn't know they'd done a documentary! What year is it from?

They're still great fun live. Saw them at Brixton earlier this year and they were in good spirits. The documentary is from their 2008 world tour. They try to play in countries they haven't been to before. Some of the places have little idea how to host a gig. It's all very entertaining!

A nice 'quiet one' (?) to watch is called, 'The Last Supper' the cover has a picture of Jesus at the last supper though I think some of the faces have been changed, oh yes, the other part of the title of the DVD is Black Sabbath. In between the performances from a tour in 2006(?) are the original four members of the band Ozzy, Tony, Geezer and Bill sat in a room talking laughing and reminiscing about the old days.

I think from memory there may have been the odd swear word spoken.

Someone told me to watch Hoop Dreams (I think that's what it's called?) a while ago, too. Still haven't got round to that one.

Hoop Dreams is one I've been meaning to check out for awhile. Remember it was voted no.1 in a list of best documentaries a few years ago. It is on UK Netflix by the way.

No, actually he is one I need to catch up on. Have seen a few, but there is a lot I need to see.

Oh aye. Definitely, you should. He's great at what he does. His childlike manner seems to help him, in that he is able to ask really upfront questions without coming off as aggressive or over the top. He really gets into people's heads in such a.. different way.
