Got to thinking about this after a recent thread by white avenger ("Angel without the fangs"). Does Angel have the best overall character relationships and interactions of either series? I think he does and really, I don't think it's even close.

Buffy, Spike, Faith, Cordelia, Wes, Lorne, Darla and Fred all have incredibly interesting relationships with Angel. And characters like Giles, Xander, Willow, Gunn and Drusilla all have relatively understated but still layered connections with him. There are some absolutely terrific relationships in the Buffyverse, but I think Angel's take the cake.

He totally takes the cake!
Lindsey, Lilah, Darla, Kate... even Merle!

I even find Angel's interactions with Oz, few as they are, very interesting. In a strange way the two of them end up talking a little bit more because they don't have the others to supply conversation.

I think Angel is a great straight man for the other characters to play off of. He's criticised for being boring but when you look at him from this perspective I think it is a hard claim to argue.

Once Angel is in LA at the heart of Angel Investigations, I definitely agree.

I think it's partly because he's been through several incarnations and established himself as a leader--one to follow and to respect--throughout all of them.

As a vampire with a soul he's loyal, consistent, level-headed with clear values--until of course he isn't. But establishing himself as such gained him the admiration and following of so many characters and when he did veer from the path he'd initially paved, they were waiting to embrace him again.

Anyway, there's no question that Angel is magnetic which is a lot to achieve for someone who is as dull as a table lamp....just kidding!!😛

If there is one thing Angel has it is gravitas. Table lamps may be dull at first glance but then they are turned and suddenly darkness has been filled with light. ;)
Angel really is such a dynamic character once he comes into his own in Angel the series that everyone is drawn to him. Even as the guy in the shadows who only randomly showed up in the early seasons of Buffy he was still a charismatic guy that characters in the show, outside of jealous men like Xander, couldn't help but be drawn towards. Yeah he was always brooding which I think was the main problem people had with his character but he was still so much more than that. And yes, Angel is my favorite character in both BtVS and AtS lol.
