Does anyone else feel sorry for Dawn?

I don't really think you can compare Dawn to the other characters like that, at least not in the beginning. I mean she was just a child, she shouldn't have to do super hero stuff just to be noticed, or have to prove herself useful.. I just think she's allowed to screw up a little more than the other characters.

I really don't like Dawn that much... so as soon as I saw the thread title, my first thought was 'Nope.' with a smug grin. But, I read it anyway.

...Nope. I don't. She does sort of have a hard position in the scooby gang. I mean, I would hate to be stuck researching like... like a mini-Giles all the time... but Dawn never got to me. She never related to me in any way, unlike almost every other character in the Buffyverse. I don't feel sorry for her at all. She earned all of the things she got... no one really payed attention to her. She didn't give anybody anything worth paying attention to. No one really trusted her. She never gave anyone any reason to trust her (She tried to bring Joyce back, she hardly payed attention to Buffy's authority, she never tried to prove she could be just as useful in the gang as everyone else).

This seems more like a rant, sorry. I'll post it anyway. Did I just make any sense there?

Im sorry i disagree with this. Of course she had a hard position in the scooby gang... doesnt maker her any less important than the rest. I mean she was the key, that was something worth paying attention to dont you think! And wouldnt you want to bring back someone you loved.. wouldnt you wish everyday they were there with you.. and because it was possible in btvs she attempted it.. doesnt make her a bad person! And Dawn was just as useful as everyone else.. how did she earn everything she got? do u mean she deserved everything she got? cos i dont think she did.. look what shes been through.. i do feel sorry for her.. but there were those moments were i didnt.. only because of her childish behaviour.. but she grew on me in the end

what i said awhile back in this thread:

I didnt feel sorry for Dawn.. at times she just wanted attention because people were to busy with more important things.. and she felt like an outsider because she wasnt getting all the attention... and she goes and kicks her own sister out of her own home.. please i dont feel sorry for her.. i feel sorry for Buffy.. look at what she has been through!

That is what annoyed me about Dawn... the fact she kicked her sister out of her own house and wanted attention.. other than that i did feel sorry for her at times.

Eh. You make much more sense than me.

Yeah she is. I know Dawn was only a few years younger than Buffy was when she became a slayer, but the character Dawn was supposed to be a kid, and you are allowed to find her annoying, but she is just a kid. I would annoyed like hell with her, but I still feel sorry for her. Buffy really isn't treating her too well.

Then again, there is one thing I find super annoying, and it's her taking credit for what Buffy did. Like, making Joyce breakfast, etc, that's just wrong and not ok at all even if you're a kid. Uh uh..

Exactly.. and yeah, that's just wrong, even for Dawn.
I would have appreciated Dawn a lot more, and given her more sympathy if Michelle had refrained from screaming like she did. That high pitched shrill just totally killed me. Apart from that, I thought the character of Dawn was ok, and she did deserve more sympathy from the other characters and the fans.

Just that voice. Argh!:mad61:

Yeah I'm sure someone else could have yelled "get out get out get out" in a less annoying way. (Believe it or not, I'm not sarcastic..)

there is more evidence (i just realized) that buffy did care and was trying to keep her promise in 'end of days', right? i mean, her sending dawn and xander away was (at least, she thought) what was best for them. she says she still wants dawn to be okay in the end, and wants her to see the world like she promised before. this is why when buffy is worried she won't make it through, she tries to make sure that dawn will despite that and will get to see all she would've shown her.

I thought that was just an excuse to get rid of her two weakest members (baring Anya & Andrew - who Buffy didn't really care about).

I actually felt sorry for Dawn. In season 7 I thought she really grew up. She became super research girl, and it was as if she was trying extra hard to be helpful just so she could be noticed.

Sure Buffy was busy with training the potentials but she'd gone from tolerating Dawn to completely ignoring her. The only person who seemed to have any time for her was Xander, and he'd been in Dawn's position for the past 7 years. His speach to her in Potential sumed up everything, I thought 🙂

that might be true, as well as why she wanted xander to be the one who took her, but if she wanted to get rid of the weakest members so they wouldnt get in the way, she wouldve made anya and andrew leave too. as you said, she didnt care about them, so if they got in the way it would just create more problems. when she was getting rid of the two weakest members she cared about, it is because she wanted them to be safe. she did want dawn to be safe and see the world as she'd promised, which she couldnt do if she were dead, and she worried the battle would get her killed. its sort of contradictory what you are saying. either she got rid of the weakest members because she cared for their well being, which is what i said about her caring about dawn, or cause they'd get in the way, which wouldve prompted her to get rid of andrew and anya as well cause they were also weaker and might get in the way.

I know Buffy was a mess in season 7, sort of, I think she treated everyone a bit unfair, not just Dawn.

Thank Giles. He was the one, in "First Date", who had insisted that Buffy be a leader and a serious one, at that.

As for Buffy being a mess in Season 7, she has been one since the first season.

I always loved Dawn. She didn't get enough to do in season 7, one of the problems of the year. And yeah, the only person who seemed to notice she was there in 7 was Xander.

I always felt sorry for her, though. It's a wonder she wasn't a basket case after season 5 alone. I can't say I ever found her annoying in the slightest, and am baffled by those that do. But I guess that's just me.

she did in the season 1 episode the witch

Edit:

i liked dawn she was the dame agae as buffy was when she was a slayer and buffy was like you can never patrol she really did ignore her like in the first bit of lessons she was teaching dawn to fight/stake vampires where did that go? buffy was a complete bi#th to dawn sometimes she should have been more understanding and what really p****d me off was in forever buffy slapped dawn because she was basicly telling the truth

forgive the post above this i didn't read the second page sorry

Poor little Dawn.
Born into a 14 year old body, and expected to behave like a 14 year old.
Chances are there's a few 1 to 3 year olds that scream and shout a fair bit.
Did she want to be like her big sis, probably, that fairly normal.
Then there's the I'm not real, my adopted mum dies, a hellgod wants me dead, so er yeah seems fairly sane, all things considered.

buffy should have been way more understanding like in the episode real me how childish was it to be jelous of you little sister?
