I get what you mean Katie. I do. However, I don't think pedophile is the word you're looking for. That's a bit drastic.

I think the best way to describe it is if you watched that one episode of HIMYM and how Ted wanted to go out with Becky. He pretty much stated that he wanted to date her not because she was childish, but because it made him feel needed, which is the case with most men. Men like to feel like they are the person a female can go to if they are in trouble. Fred was that kind of girl. She was rescued from Pylea and she was automatically drawn to Angel because of it. Good thing Angel didn't want to feel needed 😛. But when it came to Gunn and Wes, they both felt like Fred needed them in some way, shape or form. I think that's why you feel like she led them on. She was usually the girl in distress. And who saves the girl in distress? The hunky man.

I love Fred. I always will. If she was in distress, I'd save her. 🙂

I 100% completely disagree with this post. Fred was amazing. She made the show so much better. She added a lot off happiness and quirkiness which made the show much more lighter. She had an innocence to her that no other character on the show had.

She was cute, I must say. Totally saveable. Much like Tara and (I'll go out on a limb to say this!) Willow. In contrast to Cordelia and Faith. Sorry, but tall-poppy syndrome creeping in...

I don't mind fred, but I hate hate hate that she drove a massive wedge between Wes and Gunn, who I think had the best friendship on the two shows (alongside Angel/Cordelia and Buffy/Xander).

What exactly did Fred do wrong though? She didn't cheat, she just made a choice. Wesley and Gunn falling out over Fred and losing their good friendship says more about their immaturity than anything Fred did.

I remembered that I kinda liked Fred, well, I had a good memory of her from what I remember of the few times I had seen Angel...
But now, as I watched the entire show, I realised that I really hate her!
Well, not exactly "hate", I think the best word would be "really, really can't stand her at all".

She sort of have those "Boo, I'm so fragile and defenceless, protect me!" vibes. And it's really pisses me off in a way. It's like in Shrek, Puss in Boots (that I adore), you know, when he makes those big eyes to make people go "Aaaaw".
And her voice is so annoying! And the way she talks...
Actually, I pretty much dislike everything about her character (it's not against Amy tough...I think.)

Everytime it's a Fred-featuring scene, I really want to just skip it, but then, I would me a lot of things in the show. Since she's a regular, it's almost painful to watch Angel, I feel that sort of urge to scream at my screen "Fred, shut up, just shut up!"
I think she even much more annoying than Dawn, and that is quite serious!

Really, I have a problem with Fred and I only saw a few episodes with her! *I just finished "Billy"*

A reality of life is that not every person is going to be a "strong, capable woman" in the sense you're talking about. Some people are just naturally timid because of the social setting they grew up in, or because of the type of relationships they've had with people in the past. It doesn't make her any less of a woman. If anything, Fred is strong and capable because of how she managed to last for so long in a hostile dimension.

I agree. The time Gunn died for like 2 seconds she got all mad at him for "leaving her alone" and saying that AI was only online because of her. That was the only time I ever wanted to bitch slap her. Seriously woman...you didn't really contribute much! Other than that her voice was slightly annoying from time to time. But I stick with my previous statement....I love Fred!

I think we were meant to interpret that as Fred showing how much she cared for Gunn. She thought lost it him and was scared witless, people react in different ways to these things.

Anyway, in case people have realised yet from the above, yeah, I love Fred. 😛

I haven't read all the posts in this thread, but I just never got into Fred and the attachment of Wesley and Gunn never made sense to me. She's just too damned fragile and sensitive. Why didn't somebody drag her out of her room, throw cold water in her face, tell her to get over it? Yes, she's like a child, and I don't like it.

I'm a man, I'm not a pedophile, I think children both boys and girls are just fine but they should associate mainly with each other. They do have a definite physical appeal, as do also old people, but for me they have no sex appeal. And I agree, Fred is too much like a 12 year old to be attractive that way.

Remember, Fred is supposed (if I'm not mistaken, correct me if I am) to be the Angel series' Tara in some aspects.
Therefore, I don't understand why when Tara is so well-liked, Fred cops all the hate.

No no no no no no no...

Fred is NOT the AtS equivalent of Tara on BtVS. People that hate Fred, often say that she was childish, had an annoying accent, led all the men on to loving her and was too needy. How is that, in any way, like Tara?

I love Fred. I don't think she's childish, nor leads people on, nor has an annoying accent. She grew as a person on AtS, and that is the only thing that I can compare to Tara. Often more than not, people argue that she was childish even before she was sucked into Pylea. In "A Hole in the World", this is clearly shown. However, I don't think it's a reason to hate her. It's not like she did it out of her own will. She's a southern girl, who lived with her parents the whole time. Her parents always pampered her and treated her like a child (one can assume at least, which I think is fairly accurate). If she has had that mind set since she was young, and it was carried out in her adulthood, is she really to blame for that? Nope. As for being needy, I don't think it's fair to say that she was needy. She was stuck in Pylea for so many years, alone, frightened, and scared. So Angel comes along, and rescues her. At first she wary of the others, but as soon as she sees their good intentions, of course she's gonna want to latch on to them with her dear life! She doesn't want to get trapped in a hell dimension all over again! Now as for the accent, I love most southern accents anyways, so I love heres 😛

I'm 21 and i'm one of the most immature people around, but i'm also something that many grown up's aren't and that's FUN. If Fred was all anal like Wes, Cordy and Angel were in season 3 onward the show would suck the life from the viewers. Gunn and Fred's fun loving personality's saved it from that.

I wish I could be logical about why I dislike Fred, but I can't. There is something about her character that simply rubbed me the wrong way.

I have to say that my feelings about Fred have changed in the last month or so from watching Angel S4. At least twice in the season she breaks down because she's afraid of being alone (which is understandable after Pylea)- I think she comes across as somebody who's unconsciously learned that by acting vulnerable and fragile, she'll find a protector. That's one of the interesting things about 'The Magic Bullet'- by putting Fred on her own, we get to see just what resources she has.

'Supersymmetry' is another one which gets me- although it's basically the maguffin which allows the plot to happen, Fred has been trying to restart her scientific career and publishes a paper in a physics journal. When Gunn tries to read it, she starts coming on to him rather than allowing him to try to read it, and she gets all bashful when her other friends show an interest- it's as if she's embarrassed that her friends don't understand her passion and she can't communicate it to them.

I might add more another time, but ultimately I think Fred is more damaged than either Willow or Tara, and more dependent on the people around her. Perhaps that fits with being in a darker and more adult show, but to my mind a lot of the attraction of Fred is in the dialogue writing and the way Amy Acker brought her to life rather than the character herself.

I'm finally going to put my quick 2 cents in. I will start by saying that I haven't seen all of Angel but I've seen enough of Fred and read enough to know that I love her. In all honesty, she's my favourite character on the show (aside from Spike in season 5 and Cordy comes pretty close too). Ice Cream is awesome and every character has flaws. But you can't love a character unless you love or at least try to understand their flaws because we all have them too. I find her childish-ness endearing and interesting. I like people like that. Who cares about her age? Who wants to grow up really? And she was doing just fine.

I love Illyria also.

I literally saw the title of this and started shouting "no".... She is the best character in the show.. Yes she acts immature at the beginning, but she was in a dimension where she was a slave to demons for five years, everyone needs time to adjust. She grow into this inquisitive, brave and super smart woman, and she is the best character in AtS.. IMO.

Amy Acker played her magnificently and I think the change into Illyria was also amazing. I dont have a bad word to say about the character, and the thought of someone disliking her makes me sad. But I guess the thought of someone disliking Spike (me) makes some people sad 😛

I honestly don't get thinking she is the best character on the show especially when you have Cordelia and angel on the sho. But I can I understand why people like her.

Not wanting to grow up is one thing. I can understand that. But acting like an oversexualized child is another. If the writers wanted to have her play a twelve year when shes actually thirty (which is creepy enough) then dont have her also be the sexual object for the men of the show.

Thats my main issue with Fred. But I also just find her incredibly annoying.
