Does anyone else see a longevity issue?

If this show can get between 5-6 million viewers a week then it may be picked up for more episodes, but even then it may not. Friday isn't really the death slot so much now as it was back then. Ghost Whisperer airs on Fridays and it still continues to do well. Regardless, this is Fox and Joss and Eliza have both been screwed over by them before. I see it happening again.

Fox have already answered why they gave Joss the Friday slot. To give him a reprieve with this show, in other words. Giving him an excuse to give to people if the show fails, that's their very own words. Basically a way for him to get off easy by saying 'Well we were on the Friday night slot anyway', therefore people may give him a chance. I agree it sounds inane but it's their words....

I for one couldn't judge on Dollhouse. I think regardless of what we see hear we shouldn't be such pessimists when it comes to the show. After all it's not like it's been set in stone that the fate of Dollhouse is a gloomy one now has it?.

This is kind of my point.

In the same way that Buffy was more about characters than slayage (and in fact, most of Joss' work is about characters), I believe that Dollhouse will be more about characters than activeyness. In the same way that Buffy reached beyond its basic premise, I believe that Dollhouse will reach beyond it's basic premise.

I was supporting what you said. The only catch is, Echo needs to become self-aware very early on for that to happen.

5-6 million seems unlikely, especially as a mid-season replacement on Friday nights.

Longevity?! Yes. It's the reason I had bubbly anger deep inside as I watched the promo, well after all the anxiousness toned down. And it's what I hate about shows that are government or organization tied, once the bad bad empires crumbles.. what's next? A new organization? Psshhh! I was hoping it could have a little bit of supernaturalness in it! That way, hey we could work with new creeps rising from the Wicked West! The old 'oh you've never faced anything like this before, and you probably won't survive' coming in and shaking characters and their hair styles up! I'm hoping though, if it's successful (cross your fingers) the writers WILL find a way to keep it alive, kicking, and they might even throw in a musical! 😀

It does seem to be an issue but i think Joss can pull it of for at least 5 or 7 seasons. I mean look at Buffy and Angel. Both shows lasted longer than they should have actually lasted based off of their premises.

But then again, look at Firefly. I mean, obviously a lot of it had to do with Fox airing the episodes out of order, but some of it HAD to be because of the actual show.

Well the obvious answer to that is to not let the organization crumble. Joss has done it before, just look at Wolfram & Hart on Angel. i realize thez were never the only bad around, but they were always around through all the seasons and Angel never managed to take them out for good. Of course there we have the supernatural element again, them being so powerful BECAUSE there are some very dark forces around, but, in a setting like Dollhouse there could be other reasons for extreme resilience. Like, the clientelle is supposed to be super rich and well connected, right? A possible solution could be total corruption among very high people which prevents anyone (like Echo) to take out the Dollhouse for good.
I see more problems with the ratings. I know I'm not part of the official target population (as I do not live in North America) but if I were, I weren't so sure I would stay in on friday nights alone just to watch a TV show. And I assume many people my age (or older) see it the same way.

I'll just say that the premise of Buffy and Firefly both sounded boring and/or lame to me and I didn't watch either. Luckily I came to my senses (much later, unfortunately, but at least I did).

So... just trying to hold the judgment until I've seen a handful of eps and will have a better idea of what it is. 🙂

What kind of off-brand crack are you smoking? I mean Mutha, I never quite got into Angel, so I won't lie and say I anchored the Wolfram & Hart referrence. Organizations in TV series generally smell due to blatantly obvious fact that once they're truly gone, you have to be excluding your complete sense of common judgment, to know that remolding them never really works. I mean, did everyone's TV break before the Resident Evil trilogy was finished? But, what I love about Joss Whedon is his talent for creating quality writing. By that formula, Dollhouse might live to see fresh moments of screen time for a long very time.

That's just my professional opinion, but don't listen to me; I'm just a professional.

OMG! Personally, I'm stoked! I love Eliza Dushku and can't wait to see what these crazy kids have come up with this time! And Joss decided to put amy Acker in the mix! Sweet! As far as the longevity of the show...well, only time will tell...lol Having the show air on FOX does make me a little nervous because they could and would cancel if they so desired BUT many more people may have the chance to see it on a major network. Joss is all about character development and I'm absolutely sure he'll stick to that. The great thing about the show is the versatility of giving eliza the chance to be play really any personality....that could be interesting. But what other kinds of big bads will there be besides the government? Well, there's one thing we can do to ensure it's longevity....WATCH IT!
