This has been mentioned in several threads, but not in a thread of its own. Just reading the reviews of Issue 10-11, and the reaction to Buffy's speed dating and the aftermath, there seems to be mixed opinions on this subject, so I just thought that I would take a vote.

Nope, at the moment this whole thing in the comic is reeking of desperation. The way she jumped Spike in the graveyard was cringeworthy.

It's not healthy and it feels a bit contrived, but if its leads to an interesting storyline (which I'm hoping for) then I guess that's the point.

So you aren't against Buffy having romance, just badly written romance.
Kinda? Buffy resolved a longstanding internal conflict not so long ago. She decided that what she wants to be is the slayer - full time. full stop. That's great but what does that really mean for her? Will she become more proactive? Try to acquire some new skills? Train harder? ( and yes, Buffy needs to train - Simone managed to spike for crying out loud! ) What about relationships? To be honest, I'm of two minds on this. On one hand Buffy's interesting and awesome enough on her own but on the other hand, sex and intimacy humanize her. So yeah.

And just so we're clear - I refuse to stomach another sex leads badness plot. So just don't, OK?

I was going to say no at first, because I don't really think she has ever needed romance and that often it seems like it's just something they fall back on because... well because it's easy. But the answer above was way better so I'll second that!

How could you say no? Everyone needs romance. Paul McCartney said all you need is romance.
I'm not up to date on this season, so perhaps I can't really speak on this subject but...I think she does. Why wouldn't she? Yes, she's the Slayer but she's also a woman. She gets lonely. Buffy is full of love, remember? She needs someone to love.

Buffy is full of love, remember?

But does that mean romantic love specifically?

Buffy loves her sister, she loves her friends, and they all love her back. It was never really made clear what exact type of love Buffy needs.

The First vision never said 'you need naughty, squishy, smoochie love.' (Although if it had that would've been pretty neat)

I'm the kind of person who thinks no one ever NEEDS romance or a relationship. Do they WANT a relationship or romance? Yes, probably, but it's not something anyone is going to die without. Want and need are two different things.

In saying that, yes, Buffy probably does want a relationship, she probably wants to feel wanted and she's probably feeling lonely, but I want to see her be on her own. I'm so tired of all of this 'Spike or Angel' bullcrap that's always floating about. I'm so desperate for her to just say 'screw it, I'm not someone's prize to be won. I don't need to be with either of them. I'm fine on my own.' And yes, as we've discussed before, that probably is me reflecting my own beliefs onto my heroine, because I'm one of those people who doesn't want romance or a relationship of any kind and I'm sick to the back teeth of shows and movies and books and everything else telling me that the only way someone can be truly happy is if they're in a serious relationship. STFU.

This is pretty much exactly what I was thinking but never wrote in my answer. :)

To misquote Barbra Streisand, "People who need people are the most obnoxious people in the world."
Well, regardless of if someone comes along, or who that someone might be, we can rest assured of the one major constant in the Buffyverse. It won't last, and it will end badly.

That's two constants, though, isn't it?

Anyhow, no fresh, hot Buffy cookies are coming out if it.

It's okay to want a relationship. But I'm with Lyri, no one should NEED one. Heck, I'll be the first to day that I want someone, I want a family, I want people to love, and I want people to love me back. But truth is it doesn't kill you if you don't have that. Especially in fiction and literature, I want my characters to stand on their own and not rely on relationships. I don't want them to need someone else in order for them to be interesting.

As the immortal duke once said, "You may be walkin' around breathin', but inside, you're dead as a beaver hat."

Anyone as surrounded by death and pain as Buffy is has to find some way to balance that by celebrating life and happiness, or at least simple pleasure. There has to be some form of pleasure to counterbalance the pain, or she risks the distinct possibility of losing all of the finer part of her humanity, of becoming exactly the thing that she was called to battle, a mindless predator with no goal in life beyond killing.

Oh, I completely agree with this. Great quote btw! All I'm saying is that when it comes to my favorite characters, I'm not a fan of putting a need for romance in the story. I don't mind if there is, there is bound to be. But it's nice when we have a story about Buffy, and her being the bigger sister. Or Buffy and her friends (which seems like we haven't truly seen since s4). Or Buffy and Giles as a father/daughter relationship. There's just more to do than go straight to the romance story. Buffy is also surrounded by love, just not by a lover. A lover is nice, but I don't want a story where Buffy NEEDS a boyfriend. This show isn't called Twilight.

I still would point out that Buffy is, for the first time in a long while, surrouded by everybody she cares about- including Giles- and is therefore very loved and loving them in return. I don't see the need for a reheated romance for the sake of it (which is what this is).

Secondly, I look at Faith (the other slayer of note) and see a strong, comfident, kickass character that hasn't had any romantic relationship plots...well, ever really. And she seems to be surviving quite well without the soap opera.
It could be argued that Faith's latest mission to rescue Riley was kinda personal for her- but it's really just aftermath badness stuff, trying to make amends.
She's so not hooking up with anybody that fans started speculating idly about her and the slayer she was bonding with (Mai was teaching Faith to shoot and they got kinda close) 😉.

Anyway, the question wasn't romance ever, it was romance now. Imo Buffy should wait a little while for the right person to come around instead of jumping the nearest body (warm or otherwise) out of fear of being alone.

She doesn't need it but she would like it. She has always wanted a romantic relationship and it's no different now. They just haven't worked out for various reasons. I'd like to see her catch a break and be in a happy relationship for a while. Hopefully a decent writer could make it interesting.
