I saw the "Does Buffy love Spike?" thread on top of the New Posts lists and it sparked a Dru-related thought.

I think a much better question than "Does Buffy love Spike?" is "Does Dru love Spike?" I guess you could frame it in the past tense, too.

Spike was devoted to Dru. Utterly and completely. And I, for one, have no doubt that he loved her. But, as crazy as she was, was she even capable of loving him back? I think he was important to her, sure. But was it love? Is it still? Presumably, she's still undead out there somewhere. And the first thing she did after her near-incineration at the hand of "Daddy" was to go and try to get Spike back. So... is she out there somewhere waiting (or plotting) for a reunion with Spike once he's no longer "tainted" by his affection for the slayer?

I really don't even have an educated guess. What do you guys think?

i think she's too insane to know what love really is.

she tells Buffy in 'Crush' that vampires are capable of love, apparenly, but she never says that SHE'S in love, with anyone. i think she feels something for both Spike and Angel, but i don't think it's love.

i think the part of Dru's mind that still has some form of rationality knows that she should feel something for the men in her life, but she doesn't know what that something is. so she acts on instict, or that little voice inside that's telling her to run to Spike when she's hurt.

i don't know. sometimes i think she was with him because she needed him, especially when she became weak. maybe her instinctual need was a self-misinterpretation of love.

I think Dru loved her "Sweet Willie," but only by her own definition of the word "love," and her definition in no way corresponds with Mr Webster's.

I think as much as Dru was capable she loved Spike with all her crazy little heart!

Yes I do think she loved him, in as much as Vampires ever loved each other, The Judges' reaction for example, he could tell from looking at them they loved each other.

Dru doesn't strike as the "I've seen read from socio/psychological journals that vampires are capable of loving feelings..." sort of person. She seems a personal, subjective, passionate person. She says "We can" she includes herself. I think Dru can love but like all beings she defines love from her perspective. I get the feeling that Dru loved Spike but felt his betrayal (and possible the insight into his future 'betrayal') was too much to handle. We see from Season 2 that Dru clearly values evil and sadism and in that respect she connects with Angelus. Spike doesn't tend to have these tendancies. He couldn't even understand why Angelus doesn't just kill Buffy but Dru understood straight away. Dru sort of filled the chasm between the boys. She could understand love with Spike and sadism and destruction with Angelus. However while I think she values love, she values evil more. When Spike doubled crossed Angelus it was like he betrayed everything that meant something to her. Maybe if her got her another apocalypse in a box, she may have forgiven him.
