I just assumed by herself. She was doing that right through S4 til she and Xander got their place together

I thought that when she created the persona of 'anya' as a vengeance demon then she must have also created some form of home or means of survival as a student that she continued to possess after being made human, but it is confusing

She could have been passing herself off as an emancipated minor. No one would question much about a new student who is divorced from her parents, not anyone in any sort of authority position, anyway.

As long as she had the means to support herself and documents to hold up her claim (which I'm sure could be faked with magic or by some other means) it is a reasonable cover story.
