Does race affect attractiveness?

Ok, I'm gay, but I still find women attractive. The first time I actually had sex was with a woman. lol That being said, I'm still very much gay. But, what attracts me to women the most at times is not their race, color of hair, size of their butt, but how they carry themselves. You can be white and Britney Spears hot, but be conceded and I would call you "ugly." You can be black and Halle Berry hot, but be classless and loud and I would call you "ugly." I don't care if you're Asian, Hispanic, Pacific Islander, whatever...A mix of your morals, your confidence, your intelligence, and other "non-physical characterists" is what makes a woman attractive to me.

....although a big butt does help...

The final episode of Angel has Harmony in blue lingerie. OMG.... her body is outrageously perfect!! But she is so obnoxious, that I find her character to be ugly. In other words, I totally agree. 🙂

No...race does not affect attractiveness. Granted, there are people in every race that are going to be considered less than attractive. But I don't think the color of your skin makes a difference. I know that there are people that aren't attracted to certain characteristics of different races: smaller facial features for whites and asians, larger facial features for blacks and latinos, etc, but I don't think that necessarily signals rasicism. I also think that people will naturally be more acttracted to people of their own race.

I think it all depends on what you are looking for. Some people like differnt races more then other just like some people find other physical appeaances more or less attractive.

I don't really understand the whole race thing. On one hand, I understand people have certain preferences and stuff, but on the other, individuals within a race can still have very diverse features. So when people say they're only attracted to certain races and not others, it makes me think that they're basing their perspectives on stereotypes. Like, the way people think all black women have big boobs and butts, all Asian women are tiny and hairless, hispanic women have big lips or whatever. They can be true for a lot of people, but it's not true for every member of that race/gender, so the race thing just doesn't seem very relevant then? I don't know. It's just weird to me. I know I do it sometimes too when I think of race, including my own. I just don't know if it's a very good way to think about things though. Especially since standards of beauty are so narrow and somewhat racist already.

LOL. A lot of us aren't though, so it's weird! But the stereotype of Asian skin is that it's poreless, porcelain white, and hairless. If you look at typical depictions of us, there's the submissive, infantilized Asian girl, the geisha, etc. Also just to be clear, I meant body hair. 😀

That's wierd. I never knew that was a stereotype. I assumed there were some Asians with very little body hair and some with an average amount and some with an above average amount just like there are with every race.

Since attractiveness is a matter of personal concept and personal interpretation, then, yes, race CAN be a factor in an individual's definition of what they consider as being attractive. So can height, weight, hair or eye color, accent, age, the condition and color of teeth, or any and all of literally thousands of other factors that would only occur to the individual making the judgment.

The only definition of the term "attractive" that can be considered absolute and unchanging would be what also defines the old "Star Trek" Vulcan concept of IDIC: Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations.

Personally I'd say that I'm probably attracted to more white people than any other race (specifically either Mediterranean or Scandinavian looks, although those high Slavic cheekbones...yum). I don't know how much of that is cultural, though- I grew up in a town where the only non-white people were either doctors or worked in restaurants.

Race doesn't affect attractiveness - societal ideals and stereotypes do. American media portrays the "ideal" woman as young, dainty, and white, so a lot of (especially younger) people convince themselves that women who don't demonstrate such traits are unattractive. Unfortunately, black women usually get the brunt of this because they're often depicted as the overbearing and "masculine" antithesis of the ideal. That's why it bugs me when people dismiss men who say that they only find white or Asian women attractive by saying that it's just a matter of "personal preference." That's not what it is - it's part of a much larger problem that involves feeding into societal stereotypes and using them as a tool for marginalization.

With that said, I find it pretty ironic that this article was written by an Asian man, since their "objective attractiveness" isn't exactly helped by western ideals either.

Some black people are attractive. Some white people are. Some of every, single race are, but never all. There are ugly people in every race. There are beautiful people in every race.

But I do agree with Hero. It all really resides in how you carry yourself. If you have an ugly personality, you're going to look like Jasmine. Not her beautiful shiny happy people self, her oh-no-I-touched-her-blood self. Blech.

That picture was edited out and the member pmd about it. Two wrongs don't make a right, and when someone has been spoken to before about calling someone a name and then doing it again after they've asked him not to, it clearly needed to be said again more strongly.

I mostly meant this when a person's preference just happens to be conventionally attractive, which is the case 9 times out of 10. I can't tell you how many times I've heard guys say they're only attracted to white girls, and for obvious reasons I don't feel comfortable separating that from societal influence. Meanwhile, the only guy I know who claimed to prefer women with green skin and pointy red horns is my ex-boyfriend...my skin is still recovering from the paint.

My opinion seems to fall in line with the consensus of this thread. Personally, there are features (not exclusive to any particular race) which I find physically attractive. Symmetry, V-shaped upper-body, lean and athletic builds, clear skin, well groomed facial hair, etc. Light colored eyes and dark hair are personal preferences of mine, but not possessing these does not make one unattractive to me. The color of your skin has little to do with most of what I find attractive in a man.

A friend of mine from college pretty much only slept with black guys (she's white btw). The reason? It's not attractiveness, at least not only (of course she found the guys she slept with attractive, though, but she also found other, non black guys attractive), but the reason she preferred black men was because they were mostly more aggressive in pursuing girls. She liked it when guys were straight to the point regarding sex, and there were just a lot more black guys being like that than guys of other races.
The reason why I bring this up is because I find this interesting in the light of the topic as this is a clear example of looks not being the deciding point of attractiveness.

Gotta say I'm more attracted to white men than black or asian men. I have slept with a lot of races and the ones that have pleased me most have been white guys. I have a bit of a thing for dark ethnic guys more so than blonde haired, blue eyed guys for sure though.

Personally I'm more attracted to a certain kind of guy but I don't know why that is.

Individuals definitely have very different taste in blokes. My 3 besties and I used to sit around when we were single talking about men and would all have very different views about what we thought was good looking. One always went for blonde haired, blue eyed pretty boys. One went through a 'yellow fever' phase where she had a huge thing for cute asian boys. Actually, there was only one guy that all four of us agreed was a slamming hottie.
