This would be fully a guess on anybody's part, but, considering her less than stellar film career after the end of "Buffy," do you think that Sarah has ever thought that maybe she made a mistake by not (assuming that the network would have renewed) continuing the series for a few more years? Certainly it would have been to her financial advantage, if nothing else.

I think after 7 years as #1 on the call sheet, she probably had/has plenty of money and would rather do something that's more of a challenge for her. I think she was ready to let it go.

Yes and no.

Yes because she probably realized after it was all over how disappointed her fans were that it was over, and maybe because IMO the show didn't really end well. I didn't think season 7 was really anything special or spectacular. I thought it was mediocre and I can't help but wonder if she felt the same way and maybe doing a season eight could get back to the basic Buffy and really rekindle the relationship the scoobies had in past seasons.

No because it had been a long seven years and she was recently married and probably just wanted to settle down with her adorable husband and start her life. I think Buffy made her enough money to financially support her for a good portion of her life. Also I remember reading somewhere that she and a few other cast mates were not happy with the way they were being treated on set, like their opinions didn't matter one bit.

Hopefully she is happy with the decision she made by leaving after S7. She has given us all an amazing show to follow and look at this, 14 years later and Buffy still has an incredible fanbase.

As long as she is happy, I'm happy because she deserves to live a happy life knowing she was a part of something as great as Buffy The Vampire Slayer 🙂

I'm sure from a financial point of view she might look back and think that an extra few years salary would have been nice but I think, creatively and personally she was done with it. To be honest, I think she was done with it after season 5. She struggled through season 6, feeling that they had lost the character and season 7 was a means to get the character back. And to end it there. I know she got a lot of back-lash from people but I think it was the perfect time to leave. She always gave her all to the character but playing the same role for so long must be tiring. I'm glad she made the choice, imo, the show had been struggling anyway and was running out of steam, better to go out kinda strong than prolonging it and wrecking it ( not so subtle hint at season 8 ).

No no, I don't think she regrets it at all. The show is in syndication, she never has to worry about money ever again. Also, to most artists, success isn't defined by money. She has a lot to be proud of performance wise - The Air I Breathe, anyone? Honestly, the show probably would've been cancelled if it had gone on much longer which means they wouldn't be going out on their terms.

She's been quoted saying that she's very proud to have portrayed a character like Buffy Summers for so long, and it's no doubt that Buffy and SMG are iconic now. Isn't that any actor's dream? I think BtVS did all it could for SMG already, career-wise.

I don't think she has many regrets, and I agree that she was creatively done with the show and the character. To be honest, if she only regretted leaving BtVS because of financial incentives, I don't know how I'd feel about that. Of course i love watching SMG as Buffy because she just OWNS that role 😀, but if she stuck around for another season or two just for money? Eh...everyone has their issues and obligations of course, but I know I'd feel a little weird about that. It wouldn't be quite the same, knowing that she just considered it a job.

I don't think she regrets it at all. She felt done with the part.

As for the financial part, sure it's always nice to have more money but I'm sure she and the family got more than they need. Not everyone needs to go to the extremes.

This is what I think, too. Sarah might have had a couple moments where she went "What if...?" but I doubt she sat around crying about leaving BtVS or anything.

I think I'd agree that by the end of S7 there wasn't enough to challenge Sarah creatively in the role- the problem is that having played a lead role for seven years early in her career, she was always going to struggle for a follow-up role.

I think she made more than enough money from the supposed estimations of their earnings per episode.
I don't think all her movies have been less than stellar they are not all in the spotlight. I would say no she doesn't have regrets because she is acting in the things she wants. I think of course one would think what if but I myself don't think she has regrets. Seven years on a acclaimed show is hard to come by these days so that is something to be proud of.

Personally, I don't know if I could play one same character for 7 years, without, you know, getting sick of it. So yay her for sticking with Buffy for so long. I understand her wanting to stay away from the character, while she also want people to see her as other roles that are not Buffy Summers. I have a feeling she didn't want to be known JUST as Buffy. That's not what an actor wants. Today it's too late for her, because yeah, she's already "only" Buffy. That's what people know her for, and I think she doesn't like it that much.

I think the series was right to end after seven seasons, regardless of how SMG's career panned out after it ended.

I agree, although I also agree with Marisa that not all of her movies have been terrible, they just haven't had the acclaim that BTVS did.

Yeah, there's the double-edged sword (see what I did there? 🙂). Her work as Buffy has been lauded over & over, and while it's a blessing to be involved in such a popular show for so long, there is always the risk of typecasting. However, I don't agree that it's too late for her- she's still relatively young, I just don't think she's found her "next big thing" yet. I mean, Alyson Hannigan & David Boreanaz have gone on to star in other very popular TV shows. Maybe it's a good move that she's trying to come back to TV, maybe it's just a better "fit" for her, although from what I hear movies are easier on actresses with young children than serial television is.

As to whether I think she has regrets, well I'm not her, so I can't answer that. 🙂

By saying it's too late, I meant it's too late for her not to be "just" Buffy. She's trying to fight the fact that she is ALREADY known as Buffy (what she didn't want in fact), almost only. Yeah, people see her on other stuff and other roles. But the character of Buffy is already intalled to her, and it's too late not to be known as this one character. Like, when she walks in the street, people would yell "it's Buffy!" Not any other role she's played. That's what I meant by too late.

Yeah, I agree, that ship has sailed. So she'll just need to accept that I guess. Maybe she hasn't made the greatest choices with regards to movies, or maybe it's her former agent's fault, I dunno. I do know that she just changed agents. It doesn't helped that some stuff just hasn't gone her way, like the fact that Veronika Decides to Die has still not been released in the U.S. And like I said, I think she has resisted returning to television because of the schedule, which is understandable. Hell, if she decides to quite acting altogether & enjoy her life & fame as Buffy, that's fine with me! She's been working since she was a young child, I'm sure she needed some time off. I do think it's harder for women to get good roles as they age, as compared to men.

Although she didn't change agent because of this kind of stuff. I believe it was because he said about her: "She's nothing at all", or something similar. Too bad, too, because he's one of the most powerful agents in the US. And if he, one of the best ones, said stuff like this about one of his customers, I'm afraid he got her roles in not such great movies because he doesn't think she's any good. Maybe I'm just paranoid.

Wow, I didn't know that! That's terrible. He sure liked her money, though!

Although it's not as bad as it used to be, the TV and film world is notorious for treating women badly once they reach their late twenties and early thirties. Actresses have complained for years that there's very little work in between being the female lead in a romantic comedy or the hero's girlfriend, and then 10-15 years later playing a mother figure. In Sarah's case, she played the lead role in a long-running series, which will have made her expensive quite early in her career- she probably could have done a couple of romantic comedies (in fact she would probably be brilliant if she turned her hand to one) but either the offers weren't there or the work didn't appeal.

Films are probably easier to make as a young mother because of the way they're put together- it might take a few days to film a couple of scenes and then you're not needed for a couple of weeks- whereas TV series are more or less constantly in production and you'll be recording one episode while rehearsing the next one and learning lines for the next if you're one of the leads.

Depends if "The Ringer" is a success or failure.

I think SMG was in some huge movies right after Buffy, Scooby-Doo and The Grudge...but everything else has been pretty bad. She left the business for a couple years (only doing small projects) and this is her first major project in years, which is a good move since it avoids people get sick of her. So, does SMG really have the star power to keep her show on the air and avoid getting cancelled in a time when TV shows get axed very, very quickly? We'll have to wait and see

I think she's actually done pretty good for herself. A lot of actors seem to go through that "I want to do more deep/artsy/independent" etcetc period...

Perhaps now when she's gotten a few more 'meaningful' / 'artsy' movies under her belt perhaps she feels ready to try to return to something more commercial - i.e. TV, comedies and all that jazz. I certainly hope so, she has too much to give to fade away 🙂
