Imagine if everyone still referred to you by your 2009 screen name

In junior high, my AIM screen name was a White Stripes reference, and that’s not even that embarrassing, but it’s embarrassing enough that I thought twice about admitting it to you right now. YouTuber Daniel Howell probably understands my reluctance, because, as Tubefilter reports, he just announced his decision to drop his own embarrassing username of eight years.

Howell started his YouTube channel in 2009 under the name danisnotonfire, and it stuck with him as he picked up more than 6 million subscribers over the years. (It was also his handle on Twitter and Instagram.) But as he’s gotten more popular, Howell has realized the error of his 2009 ways. In his name change announcement video, Howell notes that his username’s lack of spaces and capitalization means that many fans don’t know what to call him. Some commenters have apparently read the name as “Dani Snot on Fire” and “Danis Noton Fire.” (He also said he’s going to gouge his eyes out if one more person refers to him in writing as Dan Is Not On Fire — sorry Dan!)

Howell acknowledges that the name change probably won’t stick with his hardcore fans. “On the internet, on YouTube, to you, my people, I will always be danisnotonfire, whether I like it or not,” he says. His channel name will also remain danisnotonfire — it’s only his display name that’s changing.

He says the moral of the story might be that nothing can be erased from the internet, but it also reveals a unique side of internet celebrity. Howell was a teenager when he started his YouTube channel — an age that tends to inspire pretty dumb usernames, as anyone who grew up online can confirm.

Well I joined here in 09, and still have the same username. It wasn't my first online username, but I still do use that one on occasion. So no I'm not embarrassed by it, but it's a name that has meaning I guess.

Being a neurotic with a juvenile sense of humor means I will probably always be creating online usernames I'm embarrassed of. I have and use several today. None of which I'll share.

Well my username is always just my name 😀

Your name is Athene? That's pretty 🙂

And yeah, my first username was created when I was like 12 so it's as embarrassing as it comes. But in truthfulness, all of my usernames are embarrassing, with the exception of this one... I would suck at creating aliases.

Well at least your usernames are funny to look back on 😀

Not really, well , before i decide to use this one, i want to use Cordy Chase or Cordelia Chase as username, but i decide to use Cordeliagirl, and last month i find that someone already use Cordelia Chase and Cordy Chase username. But im glad i use Cordeliagirl because someone take my pride away from me 🙂🙁

My first user name was for my AOL account when I was 12. Let's just say I loved the Pokemon Squirtle. Lol. I'm not embarrassed of it, but I wouldn't use it now. Lol.

Thank you 🙂

Yes, and no. Yes because I was really young and just picked something I thought was cool at the time. No because no one will ever know it. 😉😀

No embarrassment here - my name on various accounts starting in 2004 is amptramp and I still use that name on a number of sites.

Back in 2004, I was at a meeting of the London Vintage Radio Club and there was a guy there who had a Muzak 920-B public address amplifier for sale. He started it off with a price of $50. No takers and it looked like he was going to have to hoist this heavy beast back into his van and take it back home. He dropped the piece to $20. I was tempted, but I didn't think I had that much of a use for it. Then he dropped the price to $15 and I figured I was never going to see anything this good at such a low price again so I got it. It was a storecast amplifier where you had a phono input and a microphone input and when you keyed the mic, it grounded the music input so when someone interrupts the music with "cleanup on aisle three", you only got the voice. As it turns out, this is done by a plug-in relay so all I had to do is pull the relay and I had an amplifier with a two-input mixer for voice and instrument. The amplifier had a resistor inside that could be shorted to raise its output from the nominal 15 watts to 20 watts. Unlike most instrument amplifiers that are designed to operate for two hours at a time, this was designed to operate in a store on a 24/7 basis, so it was much more reliable than an instrument amp. Since I had travelled 175 km/110 miles to get it, the name amptramp just popped into my head one day and never left.

I was on the Rockstar INXS board when one poster of obviously prudish leanings thought the name "amptramp" was disgusting, thinking it meant I was the biggest tramp in town. I never heard from him again after I posted the explanation. Another poster mentioned that in fact "Amptramp" was the name of a California company that made amplifiers. Damn! Now I can't trademark it.

Oh come on vellavu!
How could you put GwenRaiden on the spot like that.
There is no way known that she will ever share that with us,
she will share that with everyone, just not you.. .. tee-hee.

Ethan Reigns, you should not feel any embarrassment over your username, just your house.

Only ever used this username....mainly because every board I've ever posted on was Buffy themed.
I chose it for the BBC Buffy boards as I was older than most of the others, Male, British, & they had just blown up the Watchers council on the show.....
I thought it was quite apt

As for E-mail....I've always been lucky enough to be able to use my full name (without added numbers)......so not too embarrassing. 😛

I'm rather ashamed. My first two were pretty cringe worthy. xox-Willow-xox and night-wolf. Used to use them on my Piczo website and Bebo :')
