Dollhouse cancelled

this is truly unfortunate. i think my disappointment lies more in the fact that another joss show failed, rather than the fact that Dollhouse failed.

i just want joss to succeed, so badly. i think he's one of the most creative people out there right now. most of the current shows on tv are simply devistating... it's all so plastic.

i think thats what made buffy and angel and even firefly so special... i never felt any plasticity. they were real and honest. especially in Buffy&Angel's case, there was never any need for extravigant special affects.... or cheap attention grabbers. it's hard to explain... i don't think Dollhouse really reached that level (or maybe it just didnt have the opportunity to do so...) i think it's intelligence was somewhat lost on our current culture.

I can see why people are saying "I hate fox!" and I can also see where people are coming from when they say "dont blame fox..." But the fact of the matter is: regardless of the fact that they gave Joss the second season, it wasn't right from the beginning.

Forgive me if I'm speaking out of my ass... but i specifically remember reading about how joss felt mistreated by fox as he went into Dollhouse. He made compromises to the story line and the integrity of the show from the very beginning. I dont think Joss was completely in control here. And, regardless of how that affected the ratings, I think it played a major role in how the show felt. It's even evident as I listen to the commentary on the first episode of S1...

So blame The Powers That Be over at Fox, or don't... I just think this show had potential, and for whatever reason, it didnt get there. I hope this doesn't mark the end of TV for Joss, though. Someone out there has got to have faith in him. I honestly think he'd do well on a Cable network... Showtime, HBO... something! Something that allows for brains and slightly off humor. There are a lot of quality shows being made on networks that don't have to compete for attention against the reality tv mindlessness.

Im also aware of the support he's found on the internet. the success of Dr. Horrible proves it's a great medium for his art...

any way, just my two cents.

From where the show started to how it's about to end Joss had a very clear image for his creation and planned it out well, the Unaired pilot was a work of art that was screwed up by FOX... In all the ways Dollhouse was too smart for the brainless reality TV audience... I hope there might be a continuation online or through a mini movie.

I found this interesting article - http://tigerbeatdown.blogspot.com/2009/04/dollhouse-joss-whedon-and-strange-and.html#comment-form - about the series. It had been written following the end of Season 1.

The article made a statement about the show that struck me as very interesting:

"The answer to whether Joss Whedon and his showrunners know how rape-culturey the entire Dollhouse concept is would seem to be, at this point, a big huge Yes. The Dollhouse is a giant metaphor, not only for rape culture, but for patriarchy and oppression at large: even the boy dolls are girls, stripped of agency or access to power and cast in pre-defined roles to fulfill the fantasies of the folks who are actually in charge. When they have sex, they aren't consenting - they've been made to think that they are consenting, by being made to think that they are the people who would consent to such things. They exist either in a state of infantilization and non-personhood (in which they are "cared for" by people who have a vested interest in continuing to use them) or implanted with false consciousness in which they are not aware of what's being done to them. I mean, false consciousness: Whedon's metaphors, they are rarely subtle. Their reactions to learning this, when they "wake up" (which Whedon has shown them doing, albeit briefly) are horror, disgust, and rage at how deeply they've been violated."

I was not amused when I first heard this, then I realized "oh FOX. Well but of course." Makes me wish Joss would start up his own channel. The JWS channel. Joss Whedon shows. ~sigh~

I'm so glad they gave joss a second season, it's far far better than the first.

I cannot believe they canceled the show I hate fox.

What's not to believe? They gave it a second season even with very bad ratings. And some shows just get killed off. At least they gave notice so they could give the show a proper ending. Even if they only had a few episodes to do so. I don't blame FOX for cancelling it. I hate that they did but it's understandable. I'm not sure it had survived with a better time slot either. But that we'll never know.
