There you go. The rules are different now for genre shows. The Nielsens are only a small part of the picture. Hopefully Fox has finally wised up to that.

Sluggish 'Sarah' doesn't help 'Dollhouse'

'Dollhouse' opened Friday with a 2.0 rating/6 share in adults 18-49, second in the demo to ABC's ``Supernanny'' and third in total viewers.

The net's decision to sked the high-profile skein on such a low-wattage night had raised some eyebrows, but Fox maintained it was the best place for it. The net was hoping to stake out a destination for young adults by pairing "Dollhouse" with "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles," but the latter, second-year series opened meekly on its new night.

According to preliminary Nielsen nationals, "Dollhouse" opened Friday with a 2.0 rating/6 share in adults 18-49, ranking second in the demo to ABC's "Supernanny" (prelim 2.2/7) and third in total viewers. The Fox entry maintained its demo rating from its first half-hour to its second and beat competing dramas on CBS ("Flashpoint") and NBC ("Friday Night Lights") in 18-49.

Fox has long struggled on Friday night, and "Dollhouse's" preem repped a decent improvement over previous slot occupant "Don't Forget the Lyrics," which had averaged a 1.5/5 in 18-49 in its final handful of airings.

Not helping "Dollhouse" was its "Terminator" lead-in, which averaged a prelim 1.3/5 in 18-49 and 3.7 million viewers overall (and a 4 share in the demo and 3.5 million viewers in its 8:30 half-hour), placing third in most demo categories for the hour.

It may be that Friday night is where these shows are getting put now specifically because it's the lowest-viewership night of the week. It's Loss-Leader Night.

Since these genre shows are going to sink or swim on the basis of the four D's -- DVR, download, demographics and DVD -- you might as well broadcast them on the lowest-rated night where its numbers won't hurt you that much compared to the competition.

It may be that the networks are finally getting hip to the new realities of the marketplace. Took long enough.

well they put it on a friday night, what was to be expected? i DVRed it but havnt gotten around to watching it yet. why didnt i stay home and watch it? mostly cuz i promised the boyfriend we'd go see friday the 13th that night like... months ago. Friday is a big movie night. a lot of my friends were out seeing either that or other things and just recording Dollhouse in the meantime.

I did by the way, say to my boyfriend, "do you know how much i love you that im missing the premiere of a WHEDON show for you?"

Well I haven't given up hope yet. My question is, who is Echo? What purpose does she serve besides the obvious? I don't have a real invesment yet in the characters....because she's really like a mindless robot. When will we see something special in her that MAKES us want to watch her every week? When will we see the real Echo? Man, do I wish I was watching the whole season on DVD!!
 
i wish i could watch it on TV to help the ratings but i can't, my TV has no channels whatsoever and is only useful for DVDs, so i have to watch it online, and i did twice

We've seen, on this board, that Fox tried to promote the show differently, actually tried something new (love or hate, it was actually an inventive promo).

The reviews haven't exactly been glowing either.


So yeah, lets blame Fox because surely it can't be anyone elses fault.

i agree. I mean I don't watch TV on my actual TV since it doesn't work, so i don't know how they did on ads for it, but what i saw online was pretty good.


It's not like with Firefly which Fox pretty much set up to fail (lame ads ep out of order ect...) that i think was fox's own fault.


But with Dollhouse if it gets canceled, it will be no ones fault really, i mean they put it on the stupid Friday night death slot, but i think it could live through that. and itwas a two holiday weekend that had to factor in.

and just think in the beginning of Buffy the pilot had 3.4

and for alot of the 1st season it had even less.
and the six season when it was really popular had 4.3 views,
Angel City Of had 6.2, but went waaaaaaaaaay down after that
so i don't think we should freak out all that much. only time will tell
 
The second episode's ratings have just been released, and they weren't any prettier than its' predecessor..

Fast National ratings for Friday, Feb. 20, 2009.

The second week numbers for FOX's dramas weren't anymore encouraging than the first, as CBS' dramas swept the night, even in repeats.

Among adults 18-49, CBS and ABC tied for the night with a 1.7 rating, followed closely in the key demographic by FOX's 1.5 rating and the 1.3 rating for NBC. The CW was fifth with a 0.5 rating.

Overall, though, CBS averaged an estimated 8.13 million viewers and a 5.2/9, easily beating the 3.7/7 for ABC. NBC's 2.9/5 and the 2.7/5 for FOX followed. The CW's 0.8/1 trailed.

CBS began the night in first with a 5.3/10 for "Ghost Whisperer." ABC's "Wife Swap" took second, beating the 2.4/4 for NBC's "Howie Do It" and FOX's "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles." The CW's repeats of "Everybody Hates Chris" and "The Game" trailed."

"Flashpoint" delivered a 5.1/9 for CBS in the 9 p.m. hour. ABC's "Supernanny" was second. FOX's "Dollhouse" finished third with a 2.7/5, though its viewership was down by roughly half-a-million to 4.22 million and its 18-49 numbers were down to a 1.7 rating. NBC's "Friday Night Lights" was fourth with a 2.5/4. The CW's new "13 - Fear Is Real" was fifth with a 0.6/1.

At 10 p.m. CBS completed its sweep with a 5.1/9 for "Numb3rs." ABC's "20/20" finished second with a 4.8/7, leaving NBC's "Dateline" in third.

Does anyone actually know how many people are in the Nielsen program? I've always wondered how accurate it is.
 
It's currently #1 on Hulu, and #12 and moving up on iTunes (where "Ghost" is still in the top 10).

"Target" is getting a better critical reception than "Ghost." If next week's ratings improves on or even stay even with this week's, and it continues to get good download numbers, there will be reason for optimism.
