What are the cliches that really get your goat? They don't have to be about your home, your nationality, or anything else that pertains particularly to you, just the stuff that raises your righteous indignation.

I hate the image of the dumb Georgia redneck whose family tree has no branches on it, wears filthy torn overalls and spits tobacco juice everywhere he goes.

Also, I hate the image of the drunken Native American who can only speak in broken English and constantly wears a feather in his hair and wears only buckskin shirts.

Wait - the Georgia one is a cliche!?!!?

THANK YOU!!! Choctaws lived in the same type of houses (as did many eastern tribes) and ribbon shirts (a man's formal shirt) is NOT made of buckskin but of cloth!!!
I hate the stereotype of all Germans being Nazis. I know Germans didn't exactly make friends in history, especiall during the last 100 years, but it would be wrong to assume that everybody here is still a Nazi.
Oh, and one I've heard here: Russian guys beat you up, no matter what and Russian girls are prostitutes. Sure...
A really famous one in Germany is about Polish people, saying they steal everything.

That sounds horrible 🙁 I never actually heard the ones that Social Suicide mentioned ... But due to TV, I have heard of White Avengers stereotype.

I dont really mind the Aussie stereotypes - mainly coz they're mostly true! LOL

I suppose it depends on what part of the country you are talking about. I am sure there is some truth somewhere along the line in these cliches, But they arnt always true and surely people arnt dumb enough to take it as gospel?? Are they....? 😛

the ones about Russians and Polish people are stereotypes we use here in germany; they're probably not global. The Nazi one I've heard in Engöland, though

Well, the other day someone asked me if I was really posh and spent my days drinking tea and eating scones...Yeah, that really got to me, okay, it was kinda funny at the time, but annoying.

They asked if you was posh, I hope you told them that you weren't a relative of posh spice!!
I love stereotypes. Most exist because they're true to some level, and it's one of the only ways people ever cut the P.C. crap and get honest. Honest not about how they feel, but who they are.

Also, getting upset at them is only a sign of weakness. Focus on your life and mind your temper.

I like stereotypes in general, you get to play around with them and when you actually MEET someone who is a living stereotype, it is brilliant.

Having said that, there is one I hate.

I hate the one that 'all geeks are intelligent' - trust me, I've spent enough time on here to know that is FAR from true!!!

I hate the one that older guys tend to get which is if you are a young woman of asian hertiage in Australia that you're just here find a husband to get a citizenship. Or that you can't speak English. Those ones really get under my skin. I mean, I was freaking born here!

Remember when the PM asked an asian looking girl how llong she had been in oz in a slow clear voice and the chic replied - I was born here, It made me laugh so much!

As a gardener at Churchlands ECU. I got both barrels about her being an Indian born in Perth. I was asking if she was in year 1,2 or 3 of the course.
Blondes are dumb. THAT one really grates my cheese. Annoyance extreme.
I am blonde and consider myself far from dumb. I was one of the most intelligent in my class (In a non bragging way....haha) and there have been thousands of other intelligent blondes. Though I'm not even sure how this stereotype began, but yes it annoys me.

Also the shallow-cheap-and-tacky stereotype people, though not all, generally seem to have as regards to Californians. Yes, there are some who have bright pink false nails that look akin to talons and some do have the yellow dyed blonde straw hair, but I'm sure there are people like that in any state and any country.
I'm a Californian and I look entirely normal (acting normal is another thing entirely, haha) as are my family and friends.

There the only two that personally annoy me. But stereotypes in general can be annoying, though I do like sometimes when they are used to create humor; I mean sometimes stereotypes can be presented in a postive way. Giles was a stereotype after all wasn't he? But that wasn't in an annoying get-off-the-screen way. So I guess it just depends (and okay, I'm babbling)

Hahaha! All I saw was 'Blondes are dumb' and I went all "GASP!!!"... But yea... Blondes are AWESOME (and HOT!) ;)

just saw this post and can not say how much this one bugs me too. I'm a blonde, and I too am considered one of the smartest in my class (not trying to brag) yeah, that stereotype is so annoying
I grew up with people trying to stereotype me. At my first school which was nearly all black, people stereotyped me because I was white. Other people stereotyped me because I was raised a Mormon. People at church stereotyped my family because we grew up here in the South (nearly all of them were from the west or north) and because we lived more in the country.

None of them really bothered me too much, though, I actually get more annoyed when people stereotype OTHER people and I'm always having tell people they're wrong when they say cliches/stereotypes about other people.

Oh, you know what else I really hate? Stereotypes about lesbians. There are so many and most of them are so lame. Like here in Germany they say lesbians are all pretty male looking and don't shave, and of course there's this porn cliché, and when I was in England our teacher told us about he has this stereotyöpical image of lesbians being busdrivers and having a lot of cats.

I have lots of cats and I'm neither single nor gay...
N
Nabila
I have at the moment 9 cats and I'm married to a man
The thing about stereotypes is that there are always people who live up perfectly to them. I have two gay friends: one guy and one girl, and through them I've met extremely cliche gay guys and lesbians.

I hated them all.

Since we're on the topic of lesbian... I hate the 'cliche' that because I like woman, it must mean that I like you... I don't like you... I'm probably not going to hit on you or try to seduce you... Get over yourself!

*breathes*

Much better 🙂

Joyce Summers
Yes, but if you continue to wink at me in that way....haha. But yes, that one annoys me too- on behalf of my friend whose gay and constantly comes across the same issue.

Stereotypes are our brains' way of dealing with a glut of input. We can only store so much stuff, so people from the same region/race/hair color tend to get lumped into the same category, especially if we've met a couple of people from the same region/race/hair color who acted pretty much the same. There is always some truth behind stereotypes, but not enough to assume that every single person you meet will conform to them.

N
Nabila
Exactly
Social Suicide's post just reminded me of another stereotype that annoys me; cats. Why do cats get such bad rep?

Like cats are the signs of spinsterdom and only sad lonely people would have cats. I love cats and have always had them as pets. My husband and I have three currently and as far as I know, and as the evidence shows, we are neither lonely nor spinsters....

Word of the day: Spinster

A cat and a spinster means a witch, holy crap!! that's a stereotype!. Oh bugger.
I agree with Blondie Bear. A stereo-type is just the brain's way of dealing with large chunks of this planet's population. It's impossible to get a good and balanced view of every single group. Stereotypes have a function and they can be good things, as long as you remember that it's a generalisation and that every person has the same kind of depth of character as you yourself have. Even if they seem stereotypical. I think a stereotype is a like a standard template you use for a person you just don't know well enough. If you had to assess every single person you met in your life, your brain would be working over-hours. Instead, you just look at 'em and go, hmm, I think this one belongs in this group. If I treat 'em like this, that'll probably be right. Some of the templates you use are less PC than others. And you'll often find that your initial assessment might be wrong. Most of the time, you meet and deal with people for such a limited amount of time that it really doesn't matter if you're right or wrong. In cases such as that, it would even be a waste of time, to get to know them on a personal level, so you can understand them better and form an educated opinion about them. So long as you do do that with people you know longer. And of course, whenever something extreme is involved in a stereotype, you might want to leave that out of your template.

OH another one I hate... When I tell people that I'm a lesbian, they generally assume that I didn't have a father figure in my life...

PS. Everytime I read the title of this thread, I think of Homer's "Don't you hate pants?"

No father figure = the answer people have to everything.

"See that serial killer over there? He obviously didn't have a father figure in his life."

I kid you not, I live with a Lesbian who is training to be a bus driver and guess what foul creature she has - a cat, ironically named Dickie!!
