Don't You Just Hate It...

Since we're on the topic of lesbian... I hate the 'cliche' that because I like woman, it must mean that I like you... I don't like you... I'm probably not going to hit on you or try to seduce you... Get over yourself!

LOL! I had a friend several years ago who's gay and she used to say the SAME thing! She told me her relationship with her brother got kind of strained after she came out, and she felt it was because he was afraid she'd hit on his wife or something. I thought to myself, "ok, that's totally ridiculous, LOL," but she swore it was true. People are nuts, I tell ya.

I agree with WA, I hate that "Dumb Redneck" stereotype, but there's one I'm finding more and more prevalent and it kinda scares me...The one that all Muslims are terrorists.

You know I'm not, right ? lol
The "Jews don't go camping" stereotype! Oh, wait...that one's actually kinda true...

NEVER heard THAT ONE! How weird!
Mine's probably one of the more current stereotypes!

I'm muslim, and half Iranian to boot, but no I am not a terrorist, I am not about to blow you all up, I do not hate the west (i mean, hello, im a londoner born and bred, moron!) and no, i do not HAVE TO cover up so only my eyes are showing (and if you've ever seen me clubbing, you'll realise im the complete opposite of 'cover up' girl!)!!!!

My housemate is German though, and although i make jokes about nazis to her (its allowed, i rarely do it, and we're friends) she HATES when other people say stuff... yeah its funny the first two or three times, but now its just OLD.

By the sounds of it, I'D like to see you clubbing ;) lol
The Muslim one bugs me quite a bit, too, but we here in America are getting BOMBARDED with propaganda about how extremist Muslims are trying to implement Sharia in England and we're next; how even moderate Muslims don't think that taking over and/or destroying the West is a bad thing and so won't stop the extremist Muslims and in fact help them; how they keep saying that our freedoms will work against us because they'll use our systems of government and freedom of speech etc. against us and destroy our way of life. It's CONSTANT. And while I know not ALL of you all are trying to make the West into the Middle East, sometimes its difficult to look past all the stuff CNN and FOX and MSNBC keep shoving down our throats.

about 80% of my friends are Moslem, wow, how could I survive that long

I live in England, in Birmingham, Small heath and 98% of the people who live here are Muslim and nobody has ever made an attempt to kill me, although I will admit that if a company put up a Bra billboard it has paint thrown on it, which I find odd.

I blame Jack Bauer!

I blame Hadji from Johnny Quest. Seriously, everyone knew that kid was up to no good!
It's true that most cliches are based on fact but I have to say I hate most that are attached to being Irish, i.e. that I am a pale skinned, feckled, red headed drunkard. I am none of these things, not to say that they don't exist it just doesn't represent a THE ENTIRE country as most people seem to think. I also have come across alot of people who seem to think that all Irish are terrorists and incredibly stupid. I most definitely am not a terorist and the stage Irishman who used to regularly appear in the Punch sketches is definitely a thing of fiction.

Also I hate the cliche that if you listen to certain types of music it reflects on who you are as a person. If it's hiphop you're a thug, rock/metal you're a scary biker, pop you're a teeny bopper, opera you're 'posh', emo you hate the wold, folk music you're a farmer!!!
I listen to all of the music mentioned above and fall under none of the categories associated with them!!

when I was in England kinda a lot of people asked me if I were Irish...I wonder what that says about me

Hear Hear! I hate those akward moments when people assume I will hit on them because 1) I am a girl who likes girl b) that person happens to be a girl too.

And being latina/hispanic, I've noticed that people expect me to be really sassy, saucy and spicy like salsa. I'm none of those things, I'm grumpy and dull.

I grew up in Hawaii, and when I moved here, people who had heard I was coming were surprised that I was white; they expected me to be Polynesian. They also expected me to have spent all of my time on the beach and/or surfing. I hate the beach. It's hot and sticky and sandy.

That reminds me, the other night I went out and we ended up briefly watching this drag queen show and the drag queen was making jokes about lesbians with SUVs, it was pretty funny and even the lesbians were laughing. I thought it was random because it was after I read someone mentioning it here.

SUV's are practical... Especially the Hybrid's ;)
I also really hate it when people always want to be friends with the pretty/popular girls just because they're pretty or popular. urgh, and why all the girls like the guys who play soccer and are the loud obnoxious ones in class. That really "grates my cheese" you know?

I know lots of extremely good-looking people and a lot of them are generally very nice and not nearly as stuck up or "mean" as people would think. Also, if anyone thinks someone's life would be a piece of cake just because they're good-looking they're pretty misguided, IMO, bad things happen to everyone.

The whole subject just sort of bothers me, I know a few VERY pretty girls who aren't even popular because people are jealous, I guess, and they're very sweet yet they get called bitches, and everything else. I can't tell you how grating THAT is.

Stereotypes are so unfair. People tend not to speak to me because they think I'm mean, conceited, and ignorant but I'm not. Just because somebody is attractive doesn't mean they are assholes/bitches.

Retro stereotypes comin' at ya!

I remember growing up in the '70's and 'early '80's where the general consensus was that all Puerto Ricans carried switchblades.....and that all Chinese people knew Kung-Fu. Ridiculous. 😛

See this never happens to me. Then again, I only hang out with queer people and/or feminists/lesbians, heh. We generally don't hit on each other and/or don't mind it. Lol.

I honestly don't really mind stereotypes about lesbian. I mean it sucks when people generalize, it's shitty and stupid, but I guess I live up to many of the lesbian stereotypes lol..

Why do some people hate pretty people just because they're pretty?

I know a lot of people that are pretty and really nice but there are some girls at my school that i really hate cause they're really mean but also happen to be pretty, popular and everyone loves them.

I can say that the only time stereo types or cliches bug me is when someone famous falls into it and spreads it around and makes tolerance impossible!

People who come from parts of the country thought of as "redneck" and then ACT like rednecks. Even Queer Eye drove me NUTS even with the one episode I watched of it. Oddly, it was NOTHING like any of the gay friends I had but EXACTLY what my husband's cloded minded "all gay people are going to hell" step mother THOUGHT all gay people were like. And it just cemented it for her.

The media has a GREAT opprotunity to tear down some of these stereotypes and when they choose to conform to them it makes me nuts!

Also, I hate the image of the drunken Native American who can only speak in broken English and constantly wears a feather in his hair and wears only buckskin shirts.

THANK YOU!!!
Do I (or anyone in my family) live in a teepee? No
Do I hunt buffalo? No
Do I wear a headdress full of feathers and paint my ponies with my handprints? No.
And does everyone in Oklahoma live on a farm? No. Very few do actually.
Oklahoma is not a John Wayne movie. It actually has cities and people who don't wear overalls all the time. Yes we have cows, but so do other places.

As for the PC debate, I generally agree that people worry about being too PC most of the time. Although there is debate about the whole mascot issue as of late here in the US (people having mascot names like Enid High School Chiefs, or like the Cleveland Braves) or whatnot and I agree that they should change those. Natives don't like having their images made into a stereotype any more than other people. Think of the outrage there would be if the New York Giants name was changed to the New York Chinks and had some ninja cartoon doing karate as their mascot. People would flip.

Ok stepping off my mascot soapbox now, that's just a really heated discussion here at least!

My cherokee ancestors lived in log cabins and wore headdresses similar to turbans, so there goes those two cliches.
