Doomsday Clock

That clock has been broken since I was a kid. 🕕 Whether it's ninety seconds to midnight or ninety seconds to noon, it doesn't matter.
No one knows what the future holds.

I can tell you what the future holds! On Sunday talk will mention the Beaver and the Platypus.
When I was younger, it seemed like they were constantly tweaking that clock back and forth a few minutes. I'm not sure what the point of it is. A symbol, sure, but do we need it? We know what's going on in the world, and moving it forward or back doesn't fix anything.

Still, thanks for the link, @November. It's been a long time since I've heard about that clock, so it is a bit of a blast from the past. (Though maybe I shouldn't say "blast" considering that risk of nuclear war is one of the things it measures!)

It is a measure that is supposed to shame people into realizing how far we’ve let our own ambitions and technology override our morality.

Like you said, it doesn’t really matter. The world was close to nuclear annihilation maybe one time (Cuban Missile Crisis), and even that catastrophe didn’t spark WW3. Everyone realizes that everyone else provides some good or service that fulfills a need.

You won’t see people shooting off nukes until the humanity has successfully colonized other planets to the point that they are entirely self-sufficient. Once we don’t need Earth anymore, maybe it will happen. Until then, not a chance.
 
I think the fact the Earth's core has stopped spinning is more interesting these days.
 
Yeah they are being a bit dramatic about it. Seems there have been scarier times in history before.

I remember in sixth form someone was saying that 'the clock' got close to midnight last night and I didn't know what the clock was so I said "I think the clock gets pretty close to midnight every night?".

I wish I could be as certain as @Plasma that nobody will set the nukes off anytime soon.
 
It's not a quantitative measurement. It's great iconography, but aside from frightening children, it doesn't mean anything.
 
At 17 minutes to midnight, the clock was furthest from doomsday in 1991, as the Cold War ended and the United States and Soviet Union signed a treaty that substantially reduced both countries' nuclear weapons arsenals.

Proof that the 90s was near perfection, and we should all strive to be the idealists we were (as a society) in the 1990s.
 
Nuclear powers squaring up to each other as they are currently obviously increases the risk but the clock won't shift much if it's resolved. While nukes exist accidental use is possible and eventually likely. Fun times.

Moreso than a purposeful strike. At least ISHO. More worried about an accident than missile launch. Or a rogue agent with a dirty bomb.

I heard flared jeans were making a comeback. Honestly, many of my high school students have a 90s flair to their fashion these days! And I'm all for it!
