Doyle in later seasons?

Did anyone else find it odd that Joss and David Greenwalt never brought back Doyle for any other seasons? We all know Glenn Quinn sadly passed away at the end of 2002, which was when season 4 of Angel was in it's early episodes.

So that means for two full seasons (2 and 3) that Joss and Greenwalt could have contacted Glenn Quinn and we could have gotten Doyle as a spirit or something. Does anyone know of any dropped story lines or episodes the writers were going to do, that for some reason didn't end up working?
 
I think it's weird. I thought it was weird that they killed him. He was a likable character, but I think Cordy had much more appeal.

Maybe they thought two sidekicks were too many, yet Angel had four sidekicks in Season 3.
 
Once my mum told me he got fired by Joss because of his drugs problem. Don't know if it's true, but if it is, it makes sense that he didn't reappear.

The official story was that he had to come in and overdub all the time because his accent was so strong no one could understand. And that it simply took too long in post-production with him overdubbing.

Actually, I watched all the DVD commentaries and special features, and Doyle was always going to die. Joss loved the idea of putting a character in the opening credits and killing them in the first episode to shock viewers (which was his plan with Jesse in "Welcome to the Hellmouth"). He was originally going to do that, but they liked Doyle so much they decided to keep him until episode 9. I never heard about his drug problem causing problems with Joss though, that's new to me

I know that a lot of people really loved the character, and wished that he could have stayed or returned, but, personally, I wasn't ever that fond of him, especially the cliche' of the drunken Irishman. I did read once that the part was actually written to be Whistler, but that actor wasn't available at the time, so they created Doyle. I think that Whistler would have been a better character in the series.

Funny you mention that, the very first time I saw Doyle I thought it was Whistler and it felt like it was the same character (you know, kinda demonish, sent to follow/help Angel and get him out of his meaningless broodiness)
 
I don't think his drug addiction was why his character was killed off (that was planned already) but I wonder if it was part of why they didn't use him again. I dunno. I'm sort of glad though because although I loved Doyle, Hero was a perfect send-off for him. His actions were a big motivator for Angel & co.

Haha....wow, I never knew that Glenn Quinn died around season 4. I always thought that he died when his character was killed, and that's why doyle was killed. LOL...I thought it was odd that the producers had anticipated Glenn's death. WOW...I'm pretty stupid! *hits self on head*

I'm pretty sure I've read before that Joss was tired of his drugs problem. He'd always come to work in a really bad state, and it bothered a lot of people. I think it was mentioned a couple times in many of those Angel guidebooks, like ''Hollywood Vampire'' and ''Casefiles''. That's why they killed his character as far as I know.

And no, I didn't find it odd, considering he was dead after all. 😛

Oh and I'm almost certain they did indeed contact him, because they planned to bring him back during season 4. Not sure if you've heard about this dropped storyline(it was discussed before in here), but Doyle was supposed to come back as somekind of PTB and team up with Cordelia against Angel in a Jasmine-kind of way. They wanted to end the season somewhat like the second of BtVS, with Angel having to fight and kill Cordelia the same way Buffy had to kill him.

It probably wasn't exactly gonna be like that, but that's what surfaced online concerning what AtS season 4 would have been about if Charisma didn't get pregnant, and Glenn didn't die.

It'd be cool I guess, but to be perfectly honest, would season 2-3 really benefit from Doyle's presence anyway? It just doesn't seem necessary to me. I never felt like anything was lacking and I don't feel like 'Hero' left any loose ends when it came to Doyle's character. Plus we got Wesley, Cordy, Gunn, Fred, and Lorne all on board with Angel by Season 3.

I remember talk about him coming back in season 4, never heard anything about his accent being too strong though. Glenn was able to do an American accent, but I remember reading an interview with him saying that they preferred his original Irish one
 
I don't know why his character died for sure, but i'm glad that he wasn't brought back in season 4. I think bringing characters back to life is very lame :/

The idea to bring the character back to life isn't the only option. After Darla died she made many appearances through flashbacks and spirits. Joss missed a great opportunity to bring back Glenn Quinn
