Doyle or Whistler

Basically im interested in two things. One what did you think of Whistler generally? And two,would you choose Whistler or Doyle for Angel the series? Have fun 🙂
 
Whistler was okay, but Doyle all the way for me. In 9 episode, Doyle still manages to be my favorite character of the entire Angel series.
 
Whistler was just sort of... there. He was on the show for such a short time that I usually forget about him! Doyle was just so cute and nice and friendly, and he had that whole half demon angst as an interesting plotline. It was neat to see a demon portrayed in such a positive light, showing that they are "people" too, in a way.
Anyway, I definitely liked Doyle better.

I really hated both of them, but I hated Whistler more. Just could not stand that 40's tough guy gumshoe imitation. I did not buy him at all, even though I knew his lines were probably important.

Sorry - didn't hate Doyle but not a fan. Irish, drunk, after Cordelia but forbidden - c'mon. I admired the actor (tragic end there too) and he did the best he could but there was more and more an Odd Couple feel there. When he died and Wesley came in (and I loathed Wesley at that point) the show opened up to me. Not sure why...
 
I love them both,but i think i might just slightly prefer ole Whistler. 🙂 @bespangled, i dont think they were going for a 40's tough guy look lol,i think it was more like a street smart card shark type 🙂 just my opinion. This look was very popular at the time (see Edward Nortons character Worm in "Rounders") though i think and believe Whistler was first. anyways 😛
 
I loved Whistler for the brief moments we got to see him but on the whole I prefer Doyle, I think he was more charming and that he suited the show better at that point. Whistler got Angel into the 'helping the helpless' gig so to speak, and while Doyle seeks out Angel he's not exactly a go-getter for helping in general, he needs to be kind of coerced into the helping others business which puts more pressure on Angel being the active of the two. (though without Cordy that probably wouldn't have gone too well) But still, I like the dynamic between Angel and Doyle just a little bit more than that between Angel and Whistler.

Agreed. Whistler was had a slight card sharp/used car salesman feel about him. Kinda tricksy and sly- I wasn't at all surprised when it turned out that he ultimately had another agenda for Angel.

Tough 40's gumshoe type? That is Sid The Dummy my friend, an oft overlooked character, just because he like three feet tall. 🙂

Oh, and I'll stick with Doyle. Yeah, I know he was built on Irish working class cliche's, but he had a really good chemistry with Cordelia and Angel.
I was sad to see Doyle go after only 9 episodes, and didn't like Wesley at all at first. Though that changed in 'Five By Five'/'Sanctuary'- where he got some really great stuff to work with. 🙂

Im one of the few who liked wes right away on Buffy :D,but i agree with the rest that you wrote :)
Originally, I would have said Whistler, more because I never really cared for Doyle, rather than that I actually liked Whistler. Given the recent revelation about Whistler and what his actual plans were, however, I would have to say ditch 'em both and move Oz to "Angel" after he left Willow.
 
I found Whistler hella annoying. Didn't find him the least bit appealing honestly. Although I like his part in Angel & Faith, that was interesting.

I prefer Doyle. Interesting though, since Joss only wrote Doyle out due to Glenn Quinn's issues, Whistler could have ended up staying for the duration... would we still have had Wesley? Maybe it worked out for the best.
 
Doyle! He was hilarious and Glenn Quinn managed to turn him into one of the show's best characters in exactly nine episodes.

Since they were so similar (and Doyle was intended to be Whistler), I can't draw too many comparisons, but Doyle's the one I would've stuck with.
 
Still undecided on Doyle. Think I am liking him more on the re-watch, but still not convinced overall.
 
Doyle had the charm and likeability, he made an impact and I missed him when he was gone. Short but sweet, and remembered fondly for setting the characters on the right path.
