Doyle's Death Is Overrated imo

Every time I have a Buffy/Angel rewatch, I never seem to get emotional when I fallen upon Doyle's goodbye in "Hero"

I think a big part of what makes it so emotional, at least to me, it's thinking that Glenn Quinn actually died just three years later.

With the exception of Jenny, all of those characters were in a lot more episodes that Doyle was and had been involved in multiple story arcs at he time of their deaths, so our attachment to them was that much greater. Jenny was so beloved in my opinion, partly because she was in a relationship with Giles, partly because she betrayed the group, had a strong story arc and was seeking redemption and partly because when Robia La Morte is one screen you can't take your eyes off of her. She is so ridiculously charismatic.

Doyle on the other hand was a cheeky Irish wide-boy. I have met many of these in real life and for the most part they just annoy me. That being said I liked Doyle and the dynamic he had with with both Angel and Cordelia but he hadn't been in the show quite long enough for me to feel more than a tinge of sadness when he sacrificed himself in 'Hero'

I don't know, his death hits me really hard. The first time i saw it I was sad for days. :-(. "our standards are high but our rats are low". Poor Doyle!

I think another reason his death is so emotional is because as a character he had a lot more potential. As a viewer I wasn't ready to say goodbye, I wanted to know more about him and watch his character bond with Cordy and Angel. It would have been really interesting if he had survived and stuck around.

I absolutely loved Doyle. I loved his friendship with Angel, and his crush on Cordelia was adorable. I thought he had so much potential as a character, and I thought his death was so emotional and crushing. I sobbed like my heart was broken when he died. 🙁

Overrated? Hate to disagree, but I don't think I could disagree more 🙄.

Maybe it had a lot to do with the fact that I really liked Doyle and was so sad to see him go so soon, but I thought that he had one of, if not the, best deaths on the show. Out of the list you provided, I thought he had a better ending that everyone but Wesley and Cordy. To me, the two of them with Doyle pretty much set the standard for the ultimate television deaths.

It doesn't get you? When he gives the "I guess we'll never know..." line and passes the visions on to Cordy? **Brrr**, icy in here!

Very few deaths or goodbyes get me like Doyle's does. It gets me every time.

Completely disagree, doyle's death was one of the most hart wrenching, as someone said earlier, he had so much potential, and was so integral to the show at the point he died, we loved him, the only two characters in the show loved him deeply, and he still died, which is why his death was so brutal, heart breaking and shocking!

I never formed any sort of emotional bond with Doyle, but I've always thought that it was kind of weird that as late as Season 5, they still drag out that video tape that he and Cordy made back in Season 1. They never did that with any other character on either series with the exception of Joyce, and, as has been pointed out, most of the other characters who had died along the way weren't only more popular, in my opinion, but were also available for cameos if a flashback or a "return from the grave" appearance had been used.

I think it was more about how it affected Angel and Cordelia. Or rather that combined with the other reasons everybody gives. I'm with one of the ones who cry like a baby everytime.

Doyle really set Angel on a specific direction. Without him (& Cordy) he might have remained the lonely, disconnected manpire he was in the 1st episode.

I cried in Hero (I cry easily tho) and i thought it was really poignant in "You're Welcome" when Cordelia was re-watching the commercial he was in but IMO "Hero" is not that great of an episode to me. It's a little...heavy handed? IDK. It's not the greatest episode or the greatest death, but it's shocking, sure.

yes maybe a little overrated, but I never cared much for Doyle, I'm glad Wesley came in instead, so I didn't get emotional when he died. I usually cry really easily, but his death doesn't get a reaction from me at all.
