'Dracula' Actor Cast in 'Avengers: Age of Ultron'

Joss Whedon's sequel reunites the cast of Marvel superheroes, and also adds Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and James Spader.

Thomas Kretschmann, who plays Abraham van Helsing on NBC's Dracula, has signed on for a major villain role in The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Joss Whedon is writing and directing the sequel, which reunites the main cast of Marvel's massive superhero team-up movie. The movie is also adding new actors and heroes to the fold, such as Elizabeth Olsen as the Scarlett Witch and Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Quicksilver.

Additionally, the main villain is a sentient artificial being known as Ultron, who will be played by James Spader.

Sources say that Kretchmann will play Baron Wolfgang von Strucker, an antagonist for both Captain America (Chris Evans) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). In the comics, the man was a Nazi officer who becomes one of the heads of HYDRA, a terrorist organization.

Kretschmann's other credits include Peter Jackson's King Kong and Wanted with Angelina Jolie. He is also one of the stars of Stalingrad, the acclaimed Russian war movie that will be released on IMAX domestically in February.

I remember that when these two characters were first introduced, they were allies of Magneto fighting against the X Men. It wasn't until later that they reformed and joined the Avengers. It sounds like Joss is going to either skip over or ignore entirely that part of Marvel history, not that neither he, nor the other directors/writers, have adhered all that closely to original canon up to this point anyhow.

Well, it would make sense that they would skip over that part, after all, aren't they prevented from mentioning certain characters like the X-Men and Spiderman because of licensing issues?

There was a whole thing with Quicksilver, wasn't there, when Joss said that he was planning to use the character in the Avengers sequel, because he's appearing in Days of Future Past as well. I think they came to a compromise where Joss wasn't allowed to mention anything about Quicksilver's past/future/whichever it turns out to be.

I think I read that they're villains in the beginning, and turn to the good side during the course of the movie.

I'd heard that about Spiderman, but for some reason just never connected it with the X Men. I must be getting old in my forgetful age.

On the other hand, since Disney now owns Marvel, we might see that changed sometime in the near future. Somewhere, at a con, or panel, or something, on YouTube, I recall Joss saying something about why Spiderman didn't help out in the battle in "The Avengers" would be addressed in the future (Of course, I can't find that quote anywhere now)

Of course, we can't just keep adding more and more superheroes into a single story and climactic battle and still give them all fair coverage.

I was curious when I read this how it would play since Quicksilver is going to appear in Days of Future Past and then in Avengers 2. I understand the dilemma, but I'm not very satisfied with the answer. I'm already not a fan of having two different actors and two different take of the character at the almost exact same time. Maybe I'm just bias because I think Evan Peters is insanely talented.
