Okay, I like "Buffy vs. Dracula" well enough. I'm not obsessed with Dracula himself, but I do love everyone's reaction to him in the show. Xander in particular is hilarious.
I also love that he begins Buffy's journey to discover the darker parts of herself, which Riley had sort of held her back from in S4. Still, there are a few things bugging me.

1. Dracula can fly. He can morph into a bat and take off. He can teleport from place to place. Yet he needs to mail himself to his mansion in a box full of dirt? What? ???

2. Later, Riley will be quick to blame Dracula for his eventual vampwhore business. And Dracula certainly seems to drive a rift between Buffy and Riley in this episode. (Buffy insists on waiting before fighting Dracula while Riley's all gun-ho; Buffy is tired and invites Riley to bed, but he refuses in order to go out and try to find Dracula; plus the obvious biting stuff.) Still, I don't think it's Dracula himself, but rather the aspect of Buffy that he represents, that eventually forces Buffy and Riley apart. The darkness, the essence of demon, the killer in her...Riley has never seemed able to comprehend or accept that part of her...and that's why he gets so upheave-y about Dracula.

3. OH MY GOD, RILEY, SHUT UP ALREADY WITH YOUR ANGEL JEALOUSY. Have I mentioned lately that I cannot stand this guy?

4. Does Dracula ever die? I mean, he can just un-poof himself with that smoky stuff, right? Very irritating ending in that way.
 
Season five is my favorite season, but I kind of like to pretend this episode doesn't exist. It's not the most unwatchable piece of television ever or anything, but it does almost feel like a bad parody of a real episode of Buffy. At least that's how I feel every time I watch this one.

1- that is an homage to Bram Stroker's original Dracula story, that he traveled to London in his casket.

4- Sorry, but there is no FRIGGIN WAY Buffy (the television series) would kill Dracula. That would be blasphemous.

No! one of my favs.. but then again I liked those Abbott and Costello meets.... movies, which that episode felt very much like. I thought it was a highlight.

Spike mentioned in this episode that Dracula "had to have" his coffins with dirt and fancy mansion or castles and that all of the things that made him special were just "Gypsy magic, smoke and mirrors." Maybe whatever was in those coffins wasn't really dirt, but some sort of restorative agent that gave him his enhanced powers, something like the Gem of Amara had done for Spike the season before in "Harsh Light Of Day," only expanded to include the shape shifting abilities.
 
This post gets slightly spoliery about the comics. Slighty.

This isn't my favorite episode but I do think it would have been strange to have an entire show, that lasted for seven years and about a Vampire Slayer, never touch on Dracula. A lot of it was really just poking fun at the hugeness of the Dracula myth.

I'm pretty sure that it talks a lot more about how Dracula has his power's in the comics. The "Wolves at the Gate" arc I believe. I read them but my memory retention with reading one comic a month really isn't that awesome. I don't think it talks about the dirt though. Hmm. . . . I may try to look it up in a couple days when I have a chance to go through all my comics.

Haha, I keep remembering stuff that happened in the episode as I'm writing this. I forgot that we do get Xander deciding that he's no longer going to be everyone's butt monkey. And the Chick Pit. heh.
 
This is not my favourite episode but i do find it really funny. Everyone's reaction to dracula, i like the fact that he cannot be killed, just a little break from all the serious evils who Buffy has to fight, but i do really like this episode.
 
I love this episode for its homage to Stoker's novel. It's awesome!

The 'dirt thing' has something to do with the fact that Dracula has to carry his 'home earth' with him in order to be capable of using his vampire abilities. He needs to return to it to sleep and if I recall, he can't morph or use of his hypnosis etc without having his dirt nearby...that's what its for in the novel anyhow 😛

I absolutely love how Renfield Xander is! It cracked me up so much, with the bugs and everything. Oh and the three vampire chicks, they're very erotic in the novel too 😀
 
I just felt this episode was for fun.
It's Dracula! They had to put all the stuff from Stoker's novel into it, if not I just don't think it would have worked.
Also, I think Dracula was definetly the right ammount of sexy 😀

I liked the episode, but I thought it was kind of forced. Like Whedon thought because Buffy was a vampire show, he HAD to do a Dracula episode. I understand he is famous, and I love that Spike commented on that aspect so funny, but I didn't see the need to add him to the Buffyverse. They did it well however, so I can ignore how I feel about it.

I totally agree with 2 and 3. You hit one of the many reasons why Riley annoys me as a character. He was to set in his ways and that was why he couldn't accept that part of her that is dark like Dracula. *Punches Riley in the face*.

I actually wondered what happen to Dracula. He just sorta disappeared after this episode, even though I don't think he was dead. Maybe Buffy trapped him somewhere. They never really explained where he went.
 
I love the idea of Dracula being able to hypnotize everyone. The fact that even Buffy goes under his spell shows how powerful he actually is. No biggie for B though, she still kicks his butt! She actually BIT Dracula. Wild! He was pretty sexy but I think his makeup could have been more realistic...so cliche white painted face. Xander is hilraious in this episode! I can't believe he ate a spider! Uh, I still gag thinking about it!
 
This episode does have its funny moments, namely all things Xander and Giles not wanting to leave the vamp whore pit, lmao. But overall its just not my favorite, probably bottom 3 of S5 which is my fave season.
 
I always got the impression that Dracula didn't have to travel in the dirt any more than he had to powder his face white. It was all for the show, the myth, and the legend he wanted to create. He probably wasn't even in the casket as it travelled - he just made sure enough vampires saw him get in and out of it so that his mystique grew even more.

Also, as a side note and another slight spoiler from the comics - we saw that Dracula's appearance was very affected. I agree, he looked stupid and clichéd, but he was supposed to. I can let that one slide.
 
I don't MIND this episode if I'm in the mood for mindless fun. It's ok, but nothing to write home about. I remember being uberpissed that this was the premiere of the season back in the day. I was like "Seriously?"
I hated the actor who played Dracula. I thought he was a crappy, crappy actor. And the way they had him looking was an insult to the Dracula myths.
I usually love Riley, but his jealousy in this episode drove me up the wall.
The first couple times I watched this, I thought Xander was funny, but the more I watch it, the stupider it seems to me and I get aggravated that they wrote him such cheesy, stupid lines. The best part of the ep for him, I thought, was his funny "butt monkey" speech at the end. LOL
Giles in the vamp pit was hilarious! When he was like "Oh, my shoe! I'll just go get it" I laughed soooo hard. 😀
 
episode was decent, I liked Dracula ok, but I remember thinking that he wasn't bad-ass enough. If you're going to use such a familar name with such a rich history he should be the end-all be-all. I mean, its Dracula!

He is kinda cheesey looking.
To me it's the one 'F' on Season 5's report card. It was far too campy, even for Buffy and most of the time very cringe worthy. I remember thinking 'Oh no, the shows jumped the shark'. And this was when it was on TV and no episode of Buffy could do any wrong in my eyes, so it had to be pretty bad. The saddest part is the missed opportunity of replacing Dracula with a Slayer-turned-vampire which would work for a few reasons:

1. Using the obvious storyline of a slayer-turned-vampire
2. Replacing everything camp and tacky with darker, more serious content
3. It would make far more sense of Slayer/Vampire to know and say everything Dracula did.
4. Would be a fantastic start to Buffy wanting to know more about her power, being the Slayer, etc
 
lol i love everything you just said. i was kinda warming up to Riley is season 4 so i guess he's ok. I personally think that Dracula was the hottest demon i have ever seen in BtVS! i think Buffy is better off with Dracula than Riley. But seriously.. Buffy and Angel till the end. <3
