Okay, I just watched Graduation Day Part 1 & 2 and Oz says in part 1 that the only way to cure Angel is to drain the blood of a slayer. doesn't that mean take ALL of it? cause in part 2, when Buffy asks Angel to drink from him Angel says "You'll die" and Buffy says "not if you don't take it all." but wouldn't that mean Angel wouldn't be cured since he didn't technically "drain" Buffy's blood?

oops, I put this is angel season 3. could someone move it to Buffy season 3?

Apparently the book wasn't entirely right. The vamp that beat it before didn't have a soul so why would he not drain the Slayer if he had the chance? Angel on the other hand had every reason not to drain Buffy. They took a chance and it paid off.

Maybe Oz just changed the words a bit? Just to make it sound cooler.
Other than that, maybe it was just assumed that the slayer had to be completely drained. Well, and n top of that Buffy already was pretty drained, if she hadn't gotten blood transfusion she would've died.

My assumption that the exchange between Buffy and Angel before she got him to bite her was that if he didn't take it all, it might still have given him enough strength to heal on his own.

Kinda like the Dru/Angel ritual...that was supposed to kill Angel but didn't and Dru was able to heal.

I just know the first time I watched this, it was in French version, God forgive me, and it was just horribly translated. Oz said "Il doit boire le sang d'une Tueuse", that's to say "He needs to DRINK the blood of a Slayer"... So I was like "oookay, then why doesn't Buffy open up her veins a bit, pour some blood into a cocktail glass and get it fixed?".
As you've noticed, I'm not an expert on English language, so I was never bothered about the whole "drain" thing, because I just figured it could mean to just "drink" some out of her neck, without necessarily taking it all.

if I remember correctly, it was translated exactly the same way in the German version that I know ("...das Blut einer Jägerin TRINKEN" - "drain" should literally translate as "aussaugen" in German)

I like this theory.
Only one vampire had survived, right? And he'd drained the blood of a Slayer. But it doesn't mean he HAD to drain the Slayer completely, it just means that was the only known case of a vamp surviving the poison.

Oz was still harboring resentment towards Faith for the whole Willow kidnapping thing, so he purposefully misread the passage to Buffy so she would have no choice but to kill Faith.

Maybe it's really got less to do with the actual quantity of blood taken than it does with the fact that it is Slayer's blood as opposed to the regular run of the mill hemoglobin, in which case a pint or so could have accomplished the same thing, but no one knew. As has been pointed out, a vampire seldom goes just for a sip. He wants it all.

Tht brings up another question, hough. If the Slayer's power is somehow connected to her blood, why would Buffy regain her strength so quickly when all she got was a transfusion of regular human blood? It should have taken at least a day or two to regenerate her power, even with her accelerated healing.

The part of all this that always got me a tad confused is that I assumed that for this whole draining thing to be effective to cure Angel, wouldn't Faith need to be alive while Angel did the actual draining? This might be something that I'm still drawing from Interview with a Vampire, but isn't blood no longer good when the subject is already dead? I mean I know that there's been mention of vampires feeding on people after they're dead, but I thought for this type of ritual thing it would make a difference. Thats why I always thought that Buffy's intentions were to bring Faith to Angel still alive and thus why she wasn't intentionaly trying to stab and kill her and then bring her to Angel.... this was still bugging me from a thread a while back, but I figured it was fitting here too...

I like this theory. Though it seems a bit contrived that a vampire who had been poisoned with this same Killer of the Dead compound also just happened to have a slayer on hand who could evidently be subdued by a poison-weakened vampire or his minions, and also just happened to drain her without necessarily knowing ahead of time that it would cure him. (Run-on much?)

Well, we know from what Buffy said that her intention was to bring Angel Faith's corpse.

Oz: The only way to cure this thing is to drain the blood of a Slayer.
Buffy: Good.
Xander: Good? What did I miss?
Buffy: No, it's perfect. Angel needs to drain a Slayer, then I'll bring him one.
Willow: Buffy, if Angel drains Faith's blood, it'll kill her.
Buffy: Not if she's already dead.

Buffy: There's a cure.
Faith: Damn. What is it?
Buffy: Your blood. As justice goes, it's not un-poetic, don't you think?
Faith: Come to get me? You gonna feed me to Angel? You know you're not going to take me alive.
Buffy: Not a problem.

On that note, I always found it bothersome that Buffy didn't go after the truck that Faith fell into. Of all the obstacles Buffy has overcome, of all the disasters and apocolypses she has averted, she's going to be defeated by a truck? Not buying it. Perhaps somewhere deep down, she wanted to give herself to Angel.

Or perhaps it was a plot device.

Buffy probably didn't see the truck. She just thought that Faith had fallen to the ground. By the time she got there and realized that Faith had gotten away somehow, she didn't have enough time left to search for her.

I'm pretty sure she just sits there stunned, watching the truck drive off. Even if she did think Faith was on the ground, why would she just sit there all wide-eyed? Wouldn't she boot-scoot it on down there to retrieve the body and rush off to save Angel?

If Faith had missed the truck and splatted on the ground, after all that dramatic build-up, it woulda been my favorite scene in the entire show.

That would have added a whole new layer to Oz. But it would remind me to much of Becoming pt.2 Xander.

Maybe in that moment that she stabbed Faith, Buffy realized what she was doing. Killing a human being, someone who had previously been an ally. And maybe, looking into Faith's eyes and knowing she might be killing her, she just couldn't bring herself to finish it. She made up her mind to give herself to Angel instead.
I dunno, seems like sticking a knife into an ex-friend's gut would be a pretty profound thing. Maybe she just couldn't go through with it.

Well, maybe (I know I'm saying that word a lot!) the Slayer was the one that had poisoned this vampire. And right as she did it, he grabbed her, bit her, and drank all of her blood. Presto, he didn't die, so they documented it. Just a theory. 🙂

I like that second theory of yours!

Good call! That would at least explain why she just stood there staring.

"Maybes" are what we're here to do. :: vampire Maybe the slayer poisoned the vamp, and the vamp sent out his minions to get her and bring her to him to drink as payback, and it just so happened that her blood was the cure.
