She dreamed.
She dreamed of him. Of his essence... and how she would never see him again. The night--she remembered. Her brain grazed the memory that she had of him, when she stared at him through the fog on graduation.
She thought of how he held her, so firmly but yet, in a way, so very gently. How his lips felt against hers; the cold of his kiss a striking contrast to the burning, warm love she felt for him. The love that couldn't have ever worked out.
Deep inside, she always knew. But she never wanted to believe it. Being what she was, and having him be what she was programmed to destroy...
Forbidden.
A lost love, too helpless to hope for.
That last time she saw him, she wasn't supposed to remember. But she does. The final moments he held her for the last time, silently whispering in her ear. She loved him for that, for how he could make any scary monster less scary. All she needed...was him.
She loves...
She bolts up and pants, as if a nightmare had plagued her. She felt the presence in the bed with her, and for the shortest time she had thought it was him. She had wanted it to be him, but she knew it wasn't.
She appreciated the other one, for how he cared for her. But everytime she had a dream of Angel, she knew that buried deep inside, she could never love Riley.
Not the way she loved him.
Riley Finn turned in his sleep and woke up, his first sight being Buffy Summers. He sat up with her, and she began to cry. He embraced her, not caring what was wrong but wanting to help her through it.
Buffy, she knew it was wrong to ask for comfort from the one she didn't love, but she didn't care. She needed to know that after all the heartache there was still someone who loved her.
She just hoped that Angel knew that there was someone out there who loved him, too...
