Drive Starts This Sunday

Drive is the new TV series which airs April 15th on FOX. The series is created by Tim Minear (Angel, Firefly, Wonderfalls) and Ben Queen (Century City), and producer credits additionally include Greg Yaitanes (director: Lost, Alias, House). It stars a large ensemble cast, including Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Serenity), Emma Stone (Malcolm in the Middle, Medium), Melanie Lynskey (Flags of our Fathers) and Kevin Alejandro (Sleeper Cell). It charts a mysterious cross country road race, in a fast paced, high action television series which looks and feels like nothing you've ever seen before. Who is running in the race, what are they hiding, why do they need to win, where does the race originate from -- and what lies at the finish line?

Tons of Whedonverse connections. Tim Minear showran Angel season 4, and Firefly. Firefly's Captain Mal (Fillion), appearances by Amy Acker, the guy who played bounty hunter Jubal Early on Firefly, the director of Welcome to the Hellmouth in an acting appearance, Katie Finneran who played Jaye's sister in Wondefall's.

There's a comment from Tim Minear in an interview which appeared today that I think describes what Drive is really going to be about better than anything.

The inspiration? It's a mad, mad, mad, mad Matchbox world. It was Ben Queen, the cocreator, who had the idea," says Minear, recalling Drive's starting line. "He put these old matchbox cars on a table and said, 'It's an illegal cross-country road race with regular people in their own cars.'" Minear's first reaction? "No, thanks. I have to go!" But then, "As I thought about it, the thing that really appealed to me was the specificity of the idea, and how it could bear the weight of any story I wanted to tell. It could be comic. It could be a thriller. It could be melodrama. After doing things like Wonderfalls and Firefly and Angel and The Inside, the idea of putting all those things into one show got me excited."
