Drowning Spike

I think it was a screw up. Vampires don't breathe. I remember an Angel episode where Dru wanted Darla to hold her under water....

It's true that vampires don't HAVE to breathe, but since breathing is an involuntary reflex, it's quite possible that if they are distracted by something, like maybe a Turok-Han beating the crap out of them, then shoving their heads under a pool of garlic water, they would continue to inhale and exhale without even thinking about it.

He'd burn alive if he was inhaling garlic water.

We must all come to grips with the knowledge that this was a continuity error and move on to more important things like because Spike wore a red shirt in OMWF that means he loves Buffy more then Angel because he wore black in Tabula Rasa!

Great observation! That had completely slipped by me. Does that mean that because Faith purposely wore a red shirt in "Dirty Girls"...? Nah, let's not go there.

Oh, anyhow Spike is a better vampire 'cause he wore a white Hawaiian shirt in Doomed and Angel had a red Hawaiian one and...and... a pink helmet.

Lol, you're 'pink helmet lover' comment made me laugh so much you deserve shiny green points in return! :D

Sorry, but a red Hawaiian shirt and a pink helmet seals the deal for me (sw)

But Xander wears Hawaiian shirts most of the time. His only crime is being human, and I'm sure Buffy is open-minded enough to fall for a human being.

Very true. If she wasn any more open minded her brains would fall out ;)

In case, we're off topic. Like I said before that Spike might just struggle because the water touched his wounds. See? His (sexy)wounded chest was in the water. 🙂

But not only him that suffered in this episode. 😛

Joan the Vampire Slayer agrees: Ha! I love it. Actually, I think in the instance of the shirt - Angel looks cuter. I love the hat! Spike, in that color, looks even more washed out then usual.

Yeah, Spike looks vulnerable in Hawaiian shirt as he was so lost in Doomed. 🙁

Hee fun caps! Xander's sympathy face is adorable and Spike in tweed is so awesome!
I don't think it's that complex. I think if there was garlic in the water, they would have made more an emphasis on garlic actually being there. As for the water in the wounds idea, yes, it could have been hurting Spike and that was a visual they nonchalantly slipped in, but again I think it's less complicated than that. I think it was just to push the idea of torture (drowning being a very common fear to people and a distinctive method of torture).

Yea, I think most of us agree it was a plot whole on the fault of the writers.

Oh yeah :)
Going along with the "Eternal Torment" thing of being a vampire, I would guess that while vampires cannot drown, they habitually mimic humans in their bodily movements, and thus instinctively tried to "breathe" even though A.) They do not need to and B.) It would cause them to feel like they were drowning to do so without air.

This is somewhat supported by the Angel season (4?) premiere where he is in a sunken coffin, and appears to be "drowning" repeatedly.

No, Spike, as a vampire, wouldn't have any breath...but it would still be horribly uncomfortable, being held underwater. Being held down by someone who is trying to torture him, underwater or not, was torture enough.

I think my brain has written this one off as a screw-up of the writers, along with a lot of other gaffes in the show....

Well Wesley says (when Angel's locked at the bottom of the ocean) that vamps won't suffer from lack of oxygen but can get brain damage from lack of blood....I think in Spike's case he's absolutely livid that his hair is getting messed up. It's like a little death to him.
