I just got my first DVD set yesterday (S7 - until now, I was going on taped-from-TV VHS) so I finally got started on watching Buffy in the original, undubbed version... and my god, am I surprised at some of the voices!

While Willow's German dub voice isn't as different from Aly's voice as I remembered, and Anya's dubber, especially, has beeing excellently casted, the difference in voices is quite huge with Buffy herself, and everyone who finds Dawn's voice annoying should stay well clear of the German dub (MT sounds so much more pleasant than the dubber, who has a bit of, how should I call it, a "nasal squeak" in her tone ^^ )...

But what I utterly freaked out at was the short Drusilla moment (the First as Dru) at the end of "Lessons" - Dru's German dubber sounds NOTHING AT ALL like Juliet Landau... meaning her real voice sounds "wrong" to me now! :hihi: I have a good mind to get the S2 DVD set next (as soon as my shoestring budget allows :sigh: pretty sure I will be foraging ebay over the coming year to get the DVDs bit by bit now...), just to get more into how Dru is originally supposed to sound like!

Have any of you other non-English fans have had similar experiences with your local dubbed versions?

btw, yay for getting a Buffy DVD
^Dru's voice and behavior is the same. What you heard the first do is what Dru is like.

I still can't believe why Germany dubs everything. I mean, on my DVD I can go to German dub, but it's so horrible. It's a crime agains the characters, the actors, and Joss hàmself!

I don´t watch dub things... HATE. It´s terrible to see the acting going wrong, the characters changing their peronality.... losing all the incredible jokes!

Subtitles all the way o//

Never heard the portuguese dub version of my DVDs.

Only when I wanna laugh. Because it's funny. But also horrible. My mom always watches Buffy in Spanish, even though I tell her not to, because it's annoying, and not... them, the actors.

I try to steer clear of German dubbing most of the time, unless for laughs and to see how they mastered some tricky jokes...and most of the time, they suck at it. 'Randy Giles' and 'I'm English' is all I need to say. Believe me, it sucks. So I only watched 2 seasons in German before I bought the DVDs. With Angel, I also tried to watch English online and later the DVDs. However, I couldn't find s4 for a time, so I actually had to watch a lot of that one in German. And let me tell you, it's not much fun. The only episode I really enjoyed was 'Spin the Bottle'...they managed to maintain a lot of jokes there...I hope. Up to this day, I've only seen this episode in German (but multiple times...don't ask me why, though).
I'm really glad they put English on the DVDs...well I guess they now dubbing pretty much sucks, and if you have the skills for English any show is mostly just a lot more enjoyable. The only exception I ever saw to that was King of Queens. But that's a different story.

Amen to the "I'm English" line dub suckage...
That´s a good thing here in Brazil.
Everything has original sound with subtitles... Just the open channels has dub.
Bless the cable TV.

Lucky you. 🙂
I live 15 minutes from the Dutch border and understand, but don't actively speak, Dutch rather well, and back in the time before dozens of cable&sat channels (mid 90s and earlier), when we still got the Dutch TV over aerial, I loved watching movies, cartoons, sitcoms and Trek on the Dutch channels, who almost never dub either and rely almost exclusively on subtitling. Actually, Dutch TV did a lot to improve my English back then! 😀

I agree. I hate dubbed things. I am so very happy that they never dub movies/shows here in Sweden. I would never ever ever watch BtVS dubbed, it's a crime, in my world. Gah.

(I prefer to watch things without subtitles too, but obviously I need them sometimes since I only speak two languages.)

Unless you count kids stuff and cartoons. But we always have both options if you´re gonna watch it at the movies or something. I prefer the original voices of course but sometimes they manage quite good. The first things that comes to mind is Ice age. But if we´re only talking teen and adult shows/movies I´m very thankful that they don´t dub. And lets face it, it´s not like it hurt our english skills. 🙂

Kids should learn how to read before they start watching movies/TV anyhow!
