As reported in the Hollywood Reporter the genius mastermind behind some of the greatest movies of our time, like Dark Shadows, Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Planet of the Funky Bunch Apes, Tim Burton is set to direct the live action movie for Disney's Dumbo. It is said to be a mix of live action and CGI.

Thus far Johnny Depp has not been announced. I am certain it will happen soon.
 
If one actor fits the term Dumbo it would be Depp, well him and Pamela Anderson😀

I have no interest in this. The original was perfect and Burton will just throw too much money at it and make it a cold experience.
 
I don't get how a live action Dumbo would work, it's an animal based movie, how are they going to change the storyline to make it more human based?

Wouldn't go that far. He is still capable of some good work such as his last film Big Eyes. The problem with him now is that he has just become too restricted into making the same kind of films, and that as he has gotten bigger budgets to work with the films have lost the heart of the early stuff. Which is why I think this would fail. Also, I don't think he is a great writer, which is why some of his best films have been scripted by Caroline Thompson.

I would. I have serious issues with his work. I didn't even like his Batman and for me that says a lot. I have never really walked out of a film before but after watching him turn Willy Wonka into Michael Jackson and ruin one of my favourite characters I now refuse to watch anything he is involved with.

Edward Scissorhands was tolerable at best.

Pee Wee's Big Adventure was good!
Tim Burton used to be good- but I think his best work is far behind him. I haven't enjoyed a movie of his in a very long time.

I'm sure that very soon he'll hire on Depp to gurney his way through a 'character' and call it acting.

Tolerable?? Its a ****ing classic! Its truly heartbreaking, magical, scary in places, and a great black comedy, with a number of excellent performances, and it is Buton at his visual best. HANG YOUR HEAD IN SHAME😱

Also don't you like things like Beetle Juice, Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow or the Corpse Bride?

I agree with thetopher his early career was very impressive not so much the recent stuff.
 
Nah, I can get why somebody wouldn't like 'Edward Scissorhands'. I like it a lot but it has a certain aesthetic that isn't to everybody's taste. Very gothic fairy tale/love story with a nice line in subversiveness. 🙂

Thing is it isn't a bad movie but a highly stylised one, unlike things like 'Alice In Wonderland' or 'Charlie & The Chocolate Factory' *shudders*

I can get why people wouldn't like it, wrong people that is😉 Theres much more to it than just the esthetics as you and I just pointed out.
 
Well I liked Tim Burton's early work (Batman particularly) but he hasn't even slightly impressed me in many years. As for Depp,I love him when he picks good scripts but he hasn't been doing any such thing in a very long time now, so I won't be watching this movie most likely. Johnny, hire someone to pick good scripts for you, because it isn't your talent buddy.

Performances I will agree with, I have no qualms about the actors used. You say that he is at his visual best, therein lies my problem. I don't like his vision, it just does not work for me. A few years ago I decided to give him another chance as I love Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, it is one of my favourite childhood books. I thought right, given his past he is surely to make Willy Wonka as dark as I imagined him in my head. That is when I walked out of the cinema. In order to save my blood pressure I just steer clear. I think my worst nightmare is actually him teaming up with Sam Witwer in the rumoured Crow reboot.

I still remember the discussion we had years ago about him. It totally changed my outlook. I think that was probably even before Charlie.

I think the difference is that ES was his own creaton or at least his and Thompson's. I think when he comes up with his own concepts is when he was at his best. Although it may seem cliche now Burton carved out a good niche for himself with fantastical gothic melodramas or black comedies based on likeable oddballs. In recent years like you hinted with you dislike for CATCF he has just recycled too many older stories, and because he has been allowed the extra cost has just thrown too much at the effects etc.. That is why I thought Big Eyes was a partial return to form as it was more low key and character driven, but still had a little bit of the beauty of early Burton.

I agree. When its his own idea, its much better. I love ES, and Beetlejuice is one of my favourite movies of all time. But I hated Planet of the Apes, and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory (Gene Wilder is Willy Wonka, thank you! ) His stuff is still really cool to look at, but he needs to stop fiddling with the classics.

The idea of him doing Dumbo doesn't make me angry. It just makes me sigh with boredom.

I haven't seen Big Eyes. Perhaps I should if it restored some of your faith @Mr Trick.

Yeah do check it out. The performances are really good, and it does feel like a nice departure from the recent Burton stuff.

It felt exactly like every other Tim Burton movie to me. The fish out of water, the color palette, the vintage style, the 'looking up' POV and the obligatory 'looking down' POV.. the quirky characters. The lead character often framed in shadows.. It plays out almost like a living cartoon, versus a good solid movie. It just felt artificial to me. There was no nuance, or ambience to it. Ultimately I thought it felt alittle hollow and lifeless. It was saccharine.

But melodrama is part of films, of course it doesn't have to be part of all films, but the kind of story Big Eyes was required you to have some of that. It wasn't a perfect film, but I thought it was an interesting character study. I liked the performances, the music and use of visuals. It was nothing like things like CATCF, Mars Attacks, Beetle Juice or Alice in Wonderland for example. Yes it had elements of Burton, but in a good way, and also it at least had a feminist angle which was refreshing.
