Dummy lawyers...

Eh, not the best thing to post when two of the staff are lawyers; myself being one of that number....

I do agree it's pretty ridiculous; especially for a service like Kazaa where you have to pay for the full service. Considering the number of artists who are actually in favour of music sharig....
 
you cant totally excuse the mother either Kazaa is a known p2p network, just because you pay for something does not mean the money is paying for the rights. There are tons of places on the net where you can download music with minimal fees, I mean its not like its news that ther has been a war between the internet users and the record companies. Its like the person on the highway speeding and he gets pulled over, his defense is that everyone else is speeding how come you caught me?

Finally may I say that it isnt fair simply to blame lawyers for the more letigious nature of our society, people are to blame as well.
I never make fun of a lawyer cause I know in a legal pinch there is no better friend in this world then a good lawyer.
 
Because it attratcs attention like this; attracts the media, everyone talks about it and it makes the point; doesn't matter who you are or where you are, if you're breaking copyright law, we can trace you, find you, and put you up in court.............

One word. Bull$hit.

The funny thing about this is that the hardcore guys who have 20,000 songs on their computers have got the gear to cover their tracks and not get caught. it's only the ones in the middle who get done and they're not really the problem.
And besides all that, I'd never find bands I like or CD I want to buy if I didn't sample stuff off the net. Then record companies wouldn't get any money from me at all.
 
hell yes lander....i only buy cd's that i've previewed...if i don't get a taste...then i don't buy it....i've been ripped how many times buy bands putting out 2 good songs and all of the others are just filler...

RIAA is fighting a losin battle...can't fight technology...cause soon...there's going to be a site like Kazaa that mask IP adresses...then those falkin record companies are falked...

what they should be doing is encouraging a download code of honor...if you like most of the album...then buy the album...but if you only like 1 or two songs...have it on the house....people would feel allot less threatened and album sales would go up...
 
Truth is no matter what you do, you cannot stop music sharing over the net, nor can you stop the sharing of other piracy products. If you gun one down, another rise to take his place. And if you go after the consumers that will do nothing about the root. And even if you pull up a root another seed brings up another.

the MPAA and whatever can continue to sue, jail etc anyone they want but the music sharing wont stop. Even if they encode the CDs the crackers find a way through it. Its like placing a bunny in a cage on a land of dirt. All its going to do is dig itself out and continue with its business.
 
I dont think that the RIAA believes it can completly stop piracy what they want to do is make the ordinary guy/gal think twice about downloading music. Or at the very least drive these people to sites where downloading songs is legal but you have to pay for it. Your right that it wont stop but they believe it will slow down dramatically.
 
they've made me think twice..i've stopped and ditched everything until a better alternative arises...

or if they drop the price for a CD to 11 bucks....

Well for a start she is above the age of criminal responsibility and should know the difference between right and wrong.

This is actually my area of law, I love Intellectual Property, and in fact my thesis is based on the outcome of the Metallica v Napster case.

Artists have a right to be paid for their music, and by people downloading it they are not getting what is rightfully theirs. Sure some only download a few tracks, but then you have those that are at it all the time and even burn them onto cd's and sell them cheaper which is just not on. You can ask until you are blue in the face for people to 'stop doing something' but talking from experience the only way to shake some sense into them is to make an example of them, and the lawyer in me backs them all the way. Do the crime....do the time 😉

And us lawyers are not dummies, we are highly trained individuals who are simply following the rules that are entrentched before us...and getting paid well for it too 😀

Faith do you think the RIAA will prosecute fully the people they have named or is it more of a show to tell everyone that they arent kidding anymore?
 
My friend was telling me this and I thought ****! I download music what happens if I get caught...Tis quite stupid though...
 
With regards to one of the children being sued; the parents have agreed to pay the music company £1200 to stop the case going ahead
 
Music business' own fault ... agree with gams, 11 bucks, would be 10 euro, that's an acceptible price, 30 is normal at the moment.

Why the little girl btw, you can find me IP on this board, I have over 2500?

I think that they will try and settle some of them out of court like Willow reported. As they stated they do not like doing this, but it is neccesary. It has given a lot of people a shake up, but they can't simply back down now and say 'oh well just promise not to do it again'. All the suits issued so far will go ahead in one way or the other.

On the matter of prices of CD's I never pay more than £9.99 for an album, I buy them online, its much cheaper, and a lot of places have delivery like http://www.cd-wow.com and http://www.play.com (great for dvd's region 1 & 2) and the artists still get what is rightfully theirs and we get music at half the price.
 
That's getting beter, but then there's the issue, that sometimes I like one song of a band, but just one, then no way I'll buy an album, but I would download it and singles are soo over.

Plus all your downloaded songs can be put in one big playlist on winamp, which is easier then on CD.

That decision is down to you, and that argument would not hold up as a good defence, because whether singles are 'over' or not they provide answer to your question, only like one track, buy the single.
