I don't own many TV series. Frankly, I'm more the movie watcher. But I have some, and there are a few that I still want to buy.

What I recommend
Supernatural, Dexter and Doctor Who at the moment, they're the only 3 shows I am current with.

I'm in the middle of a couple of boxsets right now; Babylon 5 season 2, Fringe season 1... but I'm wondering if anyone's bought anything based on this thread?

I have a tonne of boxsets but I don't think there is anything in my collection that hasn't been mentioned here so I am just going to go straight to recommendations. For me, a show isn't worth watching if you don't need to mainline it, with that in mind these are the shows that I basically gave my life over to once I found them:

The West Wing: You will probably have preconceptions of what this show is and I swear to you you are wrong. You can not imagine how intelligent, warm and thrilling this show is. It is honestly a joy to watch it. I would follow President Bartlet and his staff into Hell. I'm not even joking. This show is politics (and writing) as it should be to show us what it can be. (I watched 7 seasons in 2 weeks; by the end I felt like I actually worked in the White House.)

Battlestar Galactica: A friend of mine describes this as "West Wing in Space" so really you have no excuse to not be watching this. I find it very hard to get people to watch this show, once they hear the title they look at me like I've suggested they drink petrol. Even Buffy hasn't garnered me that reaction. When it was on air it was the best drama on TV,it was Joss' favourite show and personally, I think it leaves Firefly in the dust. The characters are built for you to love them, the stories are human stories that we can all relate to in the same manner that Buffy's stories are human stories in an extraordinary world. If you give this show a shot, you will love it. I've never known anyone to give it a go and not sell their soul to the Colonial Fleet.

Friday Night Lights: Texas Forever. The most underrated show in the last 10 years. Another show that is just joyful to watch. The characters are everything you will ever want from characters. I swear to God this show is everything. I often comment that in genre I feel like there has been the next step after Buffy, but I think maybe Tyra Collette could be it.

What all of these shows have in common is a cast of unforgettable characters. I watch a lot of TV but very, very rarely do I watch a show and pick up a character that I love so much that I take them with me. In these shows I collected handfuls of dynamic, brilliant, flawed and endearing characters.

Have you watched the BSG mini-series from 2003? I read it's essential to understand the TV show and I'm thinking about buying it.
[MENTION=10438]JCoatsworth[/MENTION] Yeah, I started with the mini-series. It tees up the entire series. Some people say that the miniseries is too slow for them but I got sucked right in. If you are having trouble sticking with it I'd suggest watching the first ep of the first season, "33". It's incredibly tense and lays it all out. I know a few people found it easier to get into the show to start with 33 and then watch the miniseries. Either way, you will want to watch the miniseries. 🙂

Also, if you like Firefly keep an eye out for a shot of Serenity during the first few minutes of the miniseries.

I have seasons 1-3 of The Vampire Diaries & just picked up season 4 a couple of weeks ago. It's a really good show.
 
I just bought season 1 and 2 of Once upon a time in the sales, haven't seen it all so I'll have a bit of a marathon of it when it arrives!

The Sopranos - every season except for the last one
The Shield - every season
Battlestar Galactica - the original series which only lasted one season
