C'mon people, where's that fighting Buffy spirit?
Heck I'd love to see a new movie based on Buffy or any of the characters for that matter - it may never happen, but I'd surely pay to see it on the big screen -- I'd probably break the habit of a life-time and go buy the thing from a DVD store if it went straight to disc rather than appearing at the cinema! (edit: by this I mean that usually I don't buy movies that skip the cinema and go straight to DVD)
Perhaps it's time that Buffy fans from all over the planet unite under one big huge Buffyesque banner and petition Joss, Sarah et al and get them to seriously consider making a new show/movie - who knows? It might work....
I don't think that it's a question of fighting spirit, and petitioning studios/writers/actors seldom achieve the desired results.
First and foremost, I don't think that there's enough real interest in a Buffy movie to convince the money men at any studio to risk the expense. Certainly, the fans are loyal and pretty much united in wanting the story to continue. That's pretty obvious by the number of people who read the Season 8 and After The Fall comics, who have either never had any interest in comics before or, like myself, haven't read any in a very long time. Unfortunately, as loyal as we are, we are only a very small portion of the number of viewers that it would take to make a profitable movie. The financial success of "Twilight" is a better argument for the production of a "Buffy" movie than all of the letters and e-mails that we, the hardcore Buffy fans, could ever send to Joss, Sarah, or David.
And that brings us to the second point. Neither Joss, Sarah, nor David have shown any real enthusiasm for returning to their roles. Certainly, none of them have actually said that they WOULDN'T do it, but I think that reprising their old roles at this time would be a bad career move for someone who wants to prove that they aren't a one trick pony. An actor or a writer has to be versatile, capable of playing more than one role, of writing more than one story. Returning to roles that they had left behind tends to illustrate just the opposite. A big enough paycheck MIGHT entice them, but I doubt it.
Third, and I'm probably going to make some folks mad when I say this, unless the proposed movie were made within the next few years, I think that at least some of the actors, especially David and James, are going to be too old to play their parts (okay, more James than David) Immortal vampires don't to age. Mortal actors do, and I, for one, just don't think that any Buffy movie would be complete without Spike and that other vampire
