Earth Hour

Heard of it? Do you care? Gonna take part? Think it's just utterly silly?

If I just remember it (don't trust me on that) I'll try to at least turn off the computer, tv and lights. One person hardly don't do much difference, if any (and I guess that's one of the reasons I don't go out of my way to remember it) so I see it more as symbolic. It's like donating to charity. Donating an extremly small sum (less than a dollar or pound, even if more of course is welcome) don't do much for you as one person or do much difference (makes it more symolic than anything else) but if everyone does the same you all of a sudden got a lot of money that can do a lot of good.

There has been campaigning for this all week in college. Actually, a friend of mine orgainise a candle lit speed dating night on campus for it. Depending where I am for the hour I'll take part if I can.

I can understand what they want to do with this.
They have made their point clear and I can even somewhat agree.
Even though it isn't exactly anything that we haven't already heard.

But in the end. I really don't see any point in actually turning anything off.
So no I won't turn off the only lamp I usually have lit. And I will absolutely not turn off the computers!

Love the banner.
Our whole town is doing it. We are going to the local gym, and lights a lot of candles, and will be having fun by playing games, and drink some beer, soda, and some more. 😀

I can't stand it anymore! Your banner is scary!!!
I can understand the sentiment behind the gesture but I have to wonder just how well thought out it really is. Depending on how many people actually participate, there is a chance that the resultant power surge when everyone turns their lights back on could be disasterous, resulting in the greatest blackout in history. It's just one more reason that I'm glad that I no longer work for Georgia Power Co.

Not sure how well thought it is but this is not the first year it's done and at least here "power" companies are involved so I hope that things are under control.
It was an idea that started a few years ago (probably on Facebook) that has now turned into a thing that companies are using to promote themselves.

It was hippie bullshit before but now its a marketing tool, nothing more.

I think global warming is a vast global swindle. If I thought Earth Hour mattered one way, or the other, I'd turn all the lights in the house on, do the wash, and the dishes, and idle my car in the driveway. But Earth Hour is just another bit of silliness, so I'll just ignore it.

Oh yeah total swindle. they're gonna make so much money off this latest venture those ingenious schemers...

So who are these people orchestrating this swindle? How did they start it? how are they making money? How are they fooling scientists into believing this is science when its clearly not...?

Did the swindle begin with Thermodynamics, is that all a big con too?!

I'm scared.

I'm on-board with EB and n4h. 😉

Besides, it doesn't make a difference, it doesn't help anything, and half the people I know who did participated just turned their lights off and kept computers, tvs, and other stuff on. There's not even symbolism in that. 😛

Let me see if I've got this right?
You don't believe in Global Warming but if you did you would do your utmost, however insignificant, to make it worse?

How old are you again?

I missed it. I was watching Dollhouse.

And so the world ends, not with a bang (insert joke here) or a whimper but with a Wheedon show.

Classic!

Ouch. Right out of the gate with the ad hominems. Usually you guys wait until you get slapped around with the facts a bit before we discover that's all you've got, and you have to slip into the insults.

Very well, though. Let's begin in the middle. Tit for tat. You guys would find this stuff easier to understand if you'd learn to read.

I don't believe in Global warming. Earth hour, I merely find insignificant. Earth Hour wouldn't matter even if there were a global warming catastrophe coming (which there's no reason to believe there is). It's meaningless. Even as propaganda, Earth Hour is lost in the already massive flood of what's already out there. It doesn't matter. If I thought it did matter, I'd rebel against it, but it doesn't so I don't.

Now on this...

So who are these people orchestrating this swindle? How did they start it? how are they making money? How are they fooling scientists into believing this is science when its clearly not...?

Swindle not conspiracy. What happened was a series of events converged to create an opportunity for a non-existent problem to be exploited by the unscrupulous for financial profit, and political power. Here's some examples of who those people and organizations were, and are.

Activist Organizations

Big corporations, and money managers waiting for the cap n trade gravy train, subsidies, and other goodies

Governments, and political organizations hoping to use the scam to create power centers, and scoop extra tax bucks. The UN would be a good place to start.

And of course, assorted nibblers at the easy pickens, like this crook...

Al Gore, high priest of the global warming religion

Now on this myth concerning "the science", there is no convincing scientific real world, evidence of a coming man-made, global warming catastrophe. There are failed computer models. There are vague hypotheses. That's all. I came to that conclusion by reading what I could find on the subject, and asking any and all, including yourself to produce this supposed, convincing scientific evidence if it exists. None of you could, nor can.

Some scientists support the man-made, catastrophic, global warming hypothesis. Others do not.

I can read fine thank you. Probably since before you were born. But it's not just reading it's comprehending.

And enough with the Latin. the reason for the personal attack was your statement that even if you did believe in Global Warming you wouldn't care. (I paraphrase, correct me if you disagree).

You compound it here...(If I thought it did matter, I'd rebel against it, but it doesn't so I don't.)

This is a guy that doesn't seem to have an axe to grind, although I'm sure you'll find something. There are none so blind...

However, I do agree that certain people are jumping on the bandwagon to further their own interests, The Gore family for one instance being very closely connected to this

Things get interesting when you leave!
N4H - how very rude, especially from the Management!
I get that this is a hot topic for you (and I actually fall on your side of the actual debate) but you did say
If I thought Earth Hour mattered one way, or the other, I'd turn all the lights in the house on, do the wash, and the dishes, and idle my car in the driveway
Deconstruct that line.

Seems to me its saying that if Earth Hour had a positive or negative effect, it wuldn't bother you, you'd still do you'd still do all that stuff.

Thats a very childish attitude that Selig was, in fairness, quite right to call you on.

Anyway, on topic, I watched a scary movie tonight, me and my friend watched with the lights off - does that count?
It was 96 minutes long so I am in credit with the Earth Hour - I did Earth Hour point Five!

Well that's pretty much all just blah, blah, blah Selig, so I'll ignore it, but I notice you post a link to a rhetorical attack piece from activist George Monbiot.

Fair's fair then, so here's some far superior rhetorical gems from the keynote speech of Christopher Monckton at Heartland conference of climate realists. Who's Christopher Monckton you ask? Think of him as the guy who makes Al Gore quiver in his shoes every time he's challenged to debate him.

Where are they all today, those bed-wetting moaning Minnies of the Apocalyptic Traffic-Light Tendency--those Greens too yellow to admit they’re really Reds?

The main message of this conference to the bed-wetters is this. Stop telling lies. You are fooling fewer and fewer of us. However many lies are uttered, the scientific truth remains unalterable.

---

In one recent survey, “global warming” came at the very bottom of a list of political and environmental concerns, immediately behind the need to clean up dog-poop on the streets. Why? Because dog-poop is a real environmental problem. “Global warming” is not. The correct policy response to the non-problem of climate change is to have the courage to do nothing.

---

You, in this room, have bravely upheld the truth and the scientific method against all manner of lies, threats, sanctions, personal attacks, and entertaining revisions to your CreepyMedia biographies. Because you have not failed or faltered, the Forces of Darkness are now scuttling back into their lairs, there to snivel in the eternal darkness of utter oblivion and CNN.

Divine Providence, unlike the bed-wetters, has a sense of humour. Governor Schwarzenegger--now, there’s an oxymoron for you, or “moron” for short. As soon as Governor Schwarzenegger announced that the science was settled--and how the hell would he know?--two-thirds of California’s citrus crop was destroyed. Were all those oranges and lemons wiped out by drought? Or by forest fires? No, by an exceptionally bitter frost.

Last summer, just as the President of the Royal Society, the world’s oldest taxpayer-funded pressure-group, was telling us, “Global warming is happening now,” global temperatures had already been plunging for nearly seven years, at a rate equivalent to almost 4 Fahrenheit degrees per century. Has your favourite news medium reported that? Probably not. Maybe that’s why the President of the Royal Society didn’t know. He doesn’t get his science from the learned journals. He gets it from the media.

Just as Tony Bliar was announcing on his blog that “global warming is getting worse,” just as Al Gore was testifying before the Senate--during an ice-storm--that we face a “climate crisis,” global temperatures plummeted still more. They have been plummeting at a rate equivalent to 11 Fahrenheit degrees per century throughout the four years since Gore launched his mawkish, sci-fi comedy horror B-movie. At this rate, by mid-century we shall roasting in a new Ice Age.

Gore no longer dares to publish his supposed “evidence” for “climate crisis,” because he is rightly terrified that we here will pounce on it at once and demonstrate that it is materially, serially, seriously inaccurate--demonstrate its falsity by the dull, outmoded method of reference to the facts, the science, and the data.

When Gore appeared before the Senate a few weeks ago, the hearing was supposed to be public. For it is one of the most ancient and settled principles of parliamentary democracy that the deliberations of those whom we elect, and the testimony that their committees hear, shall be open and visible to all. Yet, with the furtive connivance of Senator Boxer and her politicized snivel servants, the science slides Gore showed to the Senators were kept secret. I and others have asked for them. They are “not available at this time.” And the Senate is “exempt from the Freedom of Information Act.”

Why are those slides “not available at this time”? Because Gore is running scared. Rightly scared. Scared of prosecution for peddling a false prospectus in Generation Investment Management. Neither Gore nor any bed-wetter will any longer dare to debate the science of climate with us or anyone in the light of day. Gore’s speaking contract stipulates that he will not debate, he will not answer unscripted questions, and he will not be interviewed except by journalists acceptable to him. Which journalists are they? The dim ones that don’t know any science, and the prejudiced ones that don’t care. Just about all of them.

Recently four of us in this room were invited to a meeting of Government and opposition leaders and policymakers in Madrid, to debate the science and economics of climate against Al Gore (not a climate scientist); Railroad Engineer Pachauri, the head of the U.N.’s climate science working group (not a climate scientist); Sir Nicholas Stern, the author of the U.K. Socialist Government’s joke report on the economics of climate change (not a climate scientist); and the Environment Minister of Spain (not a climate scientist).

All four of us--three climate scientists and I (not a climate scientist) accepted the invitation to debate. All four of them refused. They said they would only come if they could speak on their own, without facing any challenge, any debate, any question, any fact, any inconvenient truth. Not one of them dared to face us. They did not have what in English we should call the cojones.

There was no climate crisis. There is no climate crisis. There will be no climate crisis. “Global warming” is not a global crisis. It is a global scientific fraud.

Much more here

Someone is having an attack of the paranoid 'bitches' tonight.

No one is 'following you around'.

You posted in a thread - you may notice, other people tend to do that.

The problem is, you bitched out Selig because he made a comment BUT his evaluation of your comment was spot on.

You clearly state that IF Earth Hour had an effect, doesn't matter which way that effect went, you'd throw your toys out of the pram and do your utmost to add to the problem.

You're behaviour in this thread, so far, has been nothing BUT childish.

You want to bitch at people, thats fine, but if you're gonna do that, you should step down from your position because you can't openly bitch members AND be a MOD on this board, those are two completely incompatible things, especially when the evidence in this thread shows that you are the pissy little bitch that started it!

OK, first of all there's something you should know. I resigned weeks ago from member modding on this site.

We're talking member to member here, you and I. Are you sure you want this fight you've been looking for the last month, or so? Yes you do follow me around looking for a fight, and you've done it to others as well. Responsibility prevented me from giving you your wish as far as a personal battle previously. I'm free now to give you the personal fight you always wanted however. Are you absolutely sure that's what you want though?

If not, get back on subject. If so bring it on tubby.

Awww, thats just awesome - gives me the warm and tinglies.

I think I can handle whatever you wish to 'throw' at me. I've seen off bigger prissy queens so you pose no threat.

FYI - its not following around IF you post in numerous threads and some of them happen to be in response to a particular person. You tend to post in a few of the bigger topics because you have the ability to simply find links and post them.
You're a patronising and condescending git to be quite fair.
I know I am, but then I don't try to be anything else.

You want to 'go' for it, you be my guest, I'm pretty sure some poindexter isn't going to have me running away crying like some little N4H!

This thread better get back on topic and ALL PARTIES better learn to have a discussion without belitting the other side or we are going to have a REAL problem REAL fast.
