BBC NEWS | England | Earthquake felt across much of UK

Well, after establishing that it wasn't the full-on national tragedy kind of 'quake...WOOO-HOOOO!!! WHEEEEE!!!! How cool was that? I've been like a big daft kid all day today since this morning's quake.

It's something I've always wanted to experience, provided no-one gets hurt and there is minimal damage, and was mildly disappointed when there was nary a tremor when we visited California.

I was up late-ish last night, being all modly and such, and there was a strange rumbling (not so much a sound, more of a feeling) and the whole house shook for what felt like ages (the BBC breakfast news said it was actually 10 seconds). I looked out of the window and there were no heavy trucks in our road and there was no bright glow over the local oil refinery (what a select location we have here at Pointy Towers - news reports in this area suggest there may have been thousands of pounds worth of improvements 😉) and realised it was some kind of earth tremor. I've since found out that it was 5.2 on the Richter scale and the epicentre was less than 20 miles away and it was felt by relatives nearly 150 miles away...that's another one ticked of my list of must-do experiences 🙂
 
See, we're in Staffordshire and I was reading until just after 1am, and I didn't feel a thing. Andy slept straight through it as well as our kids! I haven't asked any of our neighbours if they felt anything.

However, my mum who lives 5 mins down the road did feel it. I have no idea why she would experience the tremor but we didn't. I didn't even know there had been an earthquake until hearing about it on the 7 o'clock news on Heart FM this morning.

Maybe I just need to pay more attention, huh 'lol'

Was there much damage?
I have only ever felt one earthquake/tremor. My friend and I were sleeping in the back of the horsetruck as we had a show to go to in the morning. Everytime one of us moved too much the barriers in the truck banged together and made a terrible noise. I woke up to hear this huge banging noise, like nothing I had heard before, (the truck was parked in a giant shed). So me being half asleep I thought that the noise was caused by Kimmie movin too much, I rolled over and gave her a good wallap, the sound stopped and I went back to sleep. A couple hours later we woke up for the show and were told about the earthquake, Kimmie hadnt been woken by it but was complaining about an "unexplained" bruise on her arm all day 😛
 
there were reports of people experiencing tremors in North Down, Northern Ireland at the same time. apparently, it was the residual tremors of the actual quake...all the way across the water people!!

As far as I've read there was minimal damage throughout the country...chimney pots falling off, cracks in walls...that sort of thing. The only casualty I know about was some poor guy in Yorkshire who sustained a broken pelvis when some masonry fell on him while he was in bed.

How strange that your Mum should feel it and you didn't...must've been a helluva good book 🙂 My Mum felt it in Warwickshire and so did the kids near Derby.

Cool...there were reports on BBC radio that it had also been felt in Amsterdam.
 
Well MP it woke me up here in Hull and my dad. My phone then went off a million times informing me that my friends had indeed felt it too! lol

I think we're 20 miles from Scunny aren't we MP. I know it's weird but I felt it and woke up but I kind of thought that there was also a rumbling sound. I remember waking up thinking that I was miles from the railway lines so why can I hear a train! lol

I was half asleep so could have imagined it! It didn't bother me as much as some other people who I work with. I went straight back to sleep other people apparently couldn't get back to sleep! Now that's something I find odd!!!
 
I love that you're all buzzing over the quake. If it's your first big(ish) one it's usually exciting. Unless you know...you dont like them. My mother has always hated earthquakes and is terrified of them. As long as no one is hurt or major damage caught- I love 'em. hehe.

So glad to hear that no one was hurt though! Although chimney pots falling could have caused some damage if someone was casually coming in late from a party....
 
Holy friggin' crap. Me and My Mum both woke up in the night, but we didn't know it was an earthquake until this morning. My Mum started crying, because she was really out of it, and the wardrobes were shaking uncontrollably, and she thought the house was coming down. I only woke up because my wall calendar fell on me, I woke with a start to find a picture of Dark Willow staring at me :lmao: It was being talked about a lot at school, I don't think it was very strong where I live.

For those who don't know, Pointy Towers is just a few miles up the Humber estuary coast from Grimsby and Summers Blood lives not too far across the river from Pointy Towers and the epicentre was near Market Rasen...and if I could do picture editing I could show you more specifically on the map below - courtesy of the BBC 🙂

Haha, I heard on the news this morning that there was a man who had been sent out of the house by his other half and was sleeping in the car. Apparently he woke up this morning and found a chimney pot on the boot of the car and he'd slept right through it!

I'm quite disapointed cause I didn't feel it and neither did my boyfriend. I didn't even know anything about it until I heard about it on GMTV this morning! Perhaps there'll be a little quake specially for me when I come over to California in July!
 
I felt it when it happened, it was only a little rumbling and shaking here, but it felt like more than 10 seconds =/
 
Well that's done it, they'll be people on the streets in the UK tomorrow saying the end of the world is coming, yet another quake in the UK. Exorcisms up dramatically in the last five years.
There's never a Buffy around when you need one.

Or if you're the poor 19 year old bloke who woke to find that he'd broken his pelvis due to stuff falling on him....

To get back on topic, I couldn't believe that our national newspapers actually used some of the cheesiest headlines to describe this.

The Hull Daily Mail was 'Did the Earth Move for you?'
The Sun had a couple in bed with the headline 'The Earth Moved for us!'
The Mirror - The Day the Earth moved for 40 million of us!

Come on!! Surely they could have come up with something better than that!!!!!
 
I'm fed up of everyone talking about it now.

Yes, I felt it. I wasn't on hiatus from Britain when it happened, nor did my nerves suddenly stop working so as to let my house shaking be unnoticed. But it was just earth tremors. Let it go.
 
Hey I live in California where earthquakes have a tendency to happen often- okay not like every day often, but often enough. And I always hyped over them until I was 18. Actually I continued to get hyped- I've just learnt to keep it in now. Hehe
So in England, when they have the biggest earthquake there in 25 years, a lot of people are going to get excited. This is essentially like an entire nation having their first quake so naturally people are gonna get a little buzzed over it. Whether you choose not to is well, your choice.

And admittedly people will still be talking about it years on. My husband (who is English) any time we have a quake here goes on about one he felt when he was in the Clifton area (North-West of England) and that was apparently so small it wasn't felt outside that town.
