Earthquakes and such.

So, we just had an earthquake here, and it reminded me of this time when I was about ten or eleven years old, and I was super obsessed with knights and dragons, and I had this long wooden sword. I was playing with my sword in the front yard, and I was all suited up in my armor (aluminum foil, jyeahhhhh) and I lunged forward to attack the evil sorcerer! And then my living room window shook.
Now, being a child, I was prone to fantasies of magic and the like, so naturally my explanation was that I had actually slightly breached dimensional barriers and I was actually, for a fraction of a second, a knight.
Of course, I knew it was an earthquake, but I convinced myself of that for the rest of the night (and for the rest of the knight...fantasy...stop me, please?).

I want to hear your earthquake stories, funny, frightening, or whatever. Something you remember about being in an earthquake at one time, something you remember vividly for no reason, something you remember that was funny, a time you were so scared during one.
And I know some of you have never felt an earthquake, so if that's the case and you want to get in on this too, other scary natural occurrence stories are good too. Rainstorms, power outages...tornadoes? Anything!

One time when i was in seventh grade we were all in the back of the class room, doing projects on two big tables, and then out of no where the room shook from one side and it moved on to the other. Every one was uiet and just looked up. and the teacher was the first to talk saying. "Yes...that was an earthquake." Then every one went back to work.




another time when i was little and had bunk beds with my sister, we were sleeping when my mom goes in and wakes us up and says there was an earthquake and to go to her room and sleep there incase there was another earthquake that was bigger, and the bunk beds would be dangerous if there was, and me and my sister were like "what earthquake?"

Hmm, earthquakes. My mum is SOO scared when there's an earthquake, well, you never know what will happen of course. But I'm like this mazohist and I like the thrill...In Bulgaria there aren't many or strong ones but I'm getting the feeling there's a tendency of changing that. Yeah, maybe it is a bit scary.

When I was a kid there was just this one five-minute earthquake, we lived on the second floor and were just having lunch when it happened. My mum grabbed me and my brother and went outside to the other neighbours. I was just pissed off I couldn't get my other shoe and my lunch was interrupted 😀 I kept saying: I want my shoe!!!!

Later on, there were other earthquakes of course but not interesting ones to mention.

Blimey! Considering earthquakes can be incredibly destructive, you guys certainly seem to take them in your stride. Must be a case of familiarity breeding contempt...I'd be scared witless. Having said that, when I was in California, I kinda wanted to experience a minor tremor just so I could say I'd been in an earthquake 🙂

I think the scariest weather thing I remember being involved in was when Hurricane Iniki rolled over the Hawaiian Islands. Luckily, I wasn't on Kaui (which got LEVELED, much worse than New Orleans), but there was lots of really heavy wind and rain and the power was out for days.

Most earthquakes aren't noticeable, several hundred a day, sometimes. The last biggish one was about 18 years ago. But usually I've only experienced a couple a month with minor damage, house walls cracking, grain silos starting to lean. It's the sound of thunder in the ground, the animals and birds reaction and young babies crying for no reason that gets me.
Now cyclones and bushfires I don't like. It's a case of been there, done that, don't want to do that again.
