With Easter fast approaching, I was wondering if or how you celebrate? Is it a religious time for you or just an excuse to eat chocolate and goodies?

Personally I am not religious so it's just a time to make Easter hats for the school hat parade and supply my daughter with Easter eggs (over here that means chocolate eggs sometimes filled with sweets).

We do not do a Easter hunt for eggs although some of my relatives and friends that have big gardens do that.
 
I remember when I was a kid we used to get dressed up and go to church and then out to eat dinner later. Even when I was a teenager everybody used to get new sneakers and outfits and go to Coney Island to chill and show off our clothes lol. Now we dont really do much but give the kids baskets and stuff. I wanna try to take my son to church though.
 
I celebrate it, but to me, like Christmas, it has nothing to do with religion. I eat chocolate and stuff and that's basically it.
 
What did it for a lot of people was changing the dates that easter was celebrated. I mean changing dates from a Wednesday to a Saturday for commercial reasons, it takes all religious significance out of easter.
Some churches changed the day easter was celebrated so that they'd get a bigger attendence at church.
Then they wonder was folk don't take religion seriously.
If you were God and you saw that happening, it'd be enough to make you turn pagan ~ at least they don't celebrate mid summer solstice at the next week-end.
Now if they only handed out choccy eggs.

So in answer to your question, most folk see it as a commercial venture but the minority still see easter as an important religious occasion.
 
we don't celebrate, but I'll treat myself to my chocolate mousse-filled chocolate eggs 😀 I get them once a year and I enjoy them to the last!

Plus, it's the only easter treat I'll get if I don't want to mess up my diet.
 
Classic Swedish style by painting and eating eggs and giving candy to little kids coming dressed as 'påsk-kärringar' (a sort of witch believed to fly on her broomstick) asking for treats. I don't celebrate it religiously but it's an excuse to stock up on creme eggs!

At the local school where my cousins go, there's some big gimmicky egg thing going on. Some eggs were "discovered" on the field and every day when the kids come in they've moved or cracked or something. They've been writing stories about the eggs and even the police and fire brigade have been in as part of the act. And a team of mad scientists with sonic screwdrivers 😛 I think it's really cute, the kids are so excited about it. My youngest cousin things it's going to be a dinosaur egg. "But don't they eat people?" "Don't be silly Bex, he only eats sloppy porridge." Okay then.
 
For us it's part religious, part seasonal homage (nicked from the old pagan ways me thinks) and part an excuse for a Christmas worthy dinner and lots of chocolate. We don't go to church but we do acknowledge Christ and the resurrection and we definitely don't eat meat on Good Friday, but primarily we make it all about rebirth and Spring and eggs and chicks and baby animals etc....all put together in the form of great food (homemade hot cross buns, chocolate glazed beef, honey roasted carrots, hot cross bun stuffing and chocolate Easter egg meringue cake!)

Okay now I'm hungry.

chocolate glazed beef? hot cross bun stuffing? never heard of these before!

When was it celebrated on a Wednesday? From what I know, Good Friday is the day of Jesus' death, and Sunday was his resurrection. Was it changed back in history?
 
When I was little, we always went to church on Easter Sunday. These days, I don't go to church, but I do make sure that the religious holidays we celebrate are explained to my kids so they know why we celebrate them. My kids know that Easter is not just about the eggs and the bunny, but we do still do the egg hunt and Easter baskets and all that jazz.
 
I do recall as a kid I did a lot. We would gather the families. We had a large cook-out and easter egg hunts. My parents usually gave me a basket for some candy and typically one item/toy.

As for my family now (wife and three kids). We used to go to my wife's family for Easter when we lived closer to them. They too would have a pot-luck deal, with an easter egg hunt for the kids.

We're not a religious family so we don't participate in the religious aspect of it. We probably only celebrate the Easter Bunny part of it because our kids know of Easter through school. My mother-in-law tries to take the kids sometimes but that is for a whole different discussion.

I do wish we lived closer just to see everyone. I will see pictures online of the families and miss it. But its not really a holiday we take nearly as serious as my family does so we typically don't make the trip.

Nothing special happening for me. Normal day. I even recall when I was younger that we ever did anything out of the ordinary for it.
 
Not religious so I shall just be celebrating with eating a chocolate Easter egg and wishing those I know a great Easter. Oh and enjoying the uber long bank holiday weekend. 😀

Working for Blockbuster for the last 17 years, I haven't had a single Easter off since 1996. Now I no longer work for the Evil Empire, we are going to have a nice roast dinner, eat chocolate and moan about the movies being repeated on ITV 🙂

I'm a Nigella-ite so I intend to invent things in her theme of recipes so they are both my invention. The hot cross bun stuffing really, really works and it just makes it different from regular and gives it an easter spin and the chocolate glazed beef is cooked with fennel and parsley, garlic and chilli and then coated in this spiced cocoa glaze from Hotel Chocolat. Yummy yum yum. 😀
 
I don't have an active religious belief any more, so these days Easter for me is largely a case of doing some fundraising by raffling Easter eggs at the local supermarket, reading and doing some spring cleaning. I have an egg for Sunday but I don't cook anything else special otherwise.
 
Although I consider myself to be a Christian, I'm not strongly religious, either. I didn't go to church today, but I will be eating an Easter dinner of ring bologna and fried potatoes with my family 😀.
