Question Edward Cullen: Angel Rip-off?

The Sookie Stackhouse Series, which is the novels that True Blood are based off of came out 4 years before Twilight came out.
I feel that Stephenie Meyer not only took aspects from Buffy but also from The Sookie Stackhouse Series and The Vampire Diaries.

Oh! I didn't know that. Then she for sure did. I keep feeling like everytime I watch something about vampires now it reminds me of Twilight, but it's because Twilight is everything mixed together.

Yep and that is why i was like what? When I first heard about True Blood.

Same here then I read the books and was like wait a minute these were published in like 1991.

Overall the difference between Edward and all the vampires to me is that he isn't as brutal well not half as brutal as Damon and Eric at least. Even Angel had his moments.

Random karma so I can re karma sco and fix my mistake....and cause I love your banner!
Ok, I am actually a fan of the books, with the exception of the last one (which I disgusted, couldnt even get half way through). And Pattinson is actually not a bad actor (Remember Me, anyone?) at all but for some reason the movies just aren't the books. I never saw Edward as being an Angel rip-off. If anything he is a dulled down version of Gary Oldman's Dracula. With the exception of his being a werewolf, if any character were similar to Angel it would be Jacob.

I devour just about any vampire books (the most underrated being The Book of Common Dread and its sequel) and you see many overlapping traits. Joss "stole" Angel from this character and that. Every vampire has to have a basis and traits, and those are taken and improved (or not) from previous sources, especially if the vampire is meant to be a sympathetic character.

You get more freedom to divert from established vampiric archetypes if they are the villain; such as the one in Dread and the Steakley Vampire$ novel (again, not the dreadful movie).

EDIT:
The best ever vampire series that I have had the pleasure to read is the Joe Pitt series from Charlie Huston.. I love the prose. It's vampire noir. It's full of vulgarity and blood and um.. balls. It's Y at it's finest. Really.. it's that damn good.

Just fixing my karma faux pas....i meant agree on the other post!
Scobro agrees: Kristen is HORRIBLE.. she can ruin any movie.

I think she is better than the rest. I have only seen Niki in thirteen really and well the others I don't really see anywhere else well I saw Kellan in nightmare on elm street. Overall I see her and Robert in the future mainly her though.

You better look for another future because she won't last long. Her chance to really breakout was The Runaways but yet again she showed all the personality of a wet mop. She is lifeless and dull. She is not acting that, she is that. The Messengers, The Runaways, the Twilights and undoubtedly that Snow White movie she is in. She has no range.

Dude, she was on a deal on E! yesterday ( shush...no comments from you about my tv choice) and they were doing a deal on actresses that she was in...she has zero personality!
Im pretty sure this thread gets made like once a yearish? And for the record, not everyone hates Edward. I dont think Edward is an Angel ripoff anymore than every other vampire ever made. Its not like Angel was the first vampire that acted like he did. I dont think Twilight ripsoff stories any more than every other story either. The more you read, the more you see that. Its hard to find books that are even kind of original, especially when it comes to vampires.

I actually see alot of Stephanie Meyers characters in the Sookie Stackhouse novels. When I first watched Buffy I completely thought Edward was an Angel rip off but now moving on to TrueBlood I see alot more obvious similarities to the Twilight Saga.

Edward hears thoughts
Sookie hears thoughts
He cannot hear Bella and is drawn to that
She cannot hear Bill and is drawn to that

When I was watching TrueBlood last night I saw alot more similarities but I've forgotten lol. I even see a lot of similarities between TrueBlood and Buffy.

Eric reminds me of Spike, especially in this most recent episode.

I did actually think this as well.

Also had a far-fetched thought about the episode Earshot and Edward Cullen. Buffy couldn't hear Angel's thoughts and Edward can't hear Bella's.
And Sookie can't hear Bill's (or any vampires') thoughts. Definitely overdone topic. But Buffy did it first! 🙂

I hate Twilight/Buffy comparisons. It's like you compare this beautiful flower with the huge pile of dog poop.. that sparkles.

OMG! I repped you, but I just have to comment again- this is full of win & needs to be your status! Hell, maybe I'll make it my own!

Me too! Actually, I think Scobro is pulling our leg here.

Hmm... He fell for a girl in high school, so he started going to said school to win her over... He's Stefan Salvatore with bad hair. (And the TVD books were written WAY before Twilight.)

Seriously... I can't have depth.. you people don't know the half of who I am.. you only know what I allow you to see, and today it happened to be my, emo twihard side. Deal with it!! And dont talk crap about my Wizard of Oz original reproduction book either cuz that rocks too! I like books. Sue me.

Oh, and Achromatic Hue, don't be talkin' smack about my Angel's hair! I've got to have it all- the hair, the forehead, the brooding....

Although I just finished Torchwood: Children of Earth and I have to say that Capt. Jack/John Barrowman's hair is very good competition for DB's!

2nd paragraph: BLASPHEMY!
You know, most current vampire shows or books have tons of overlapping and similar traits as older vampire tales; some of which date back to the 1800's.

Buffy, Twilight, The Vampire Diaries and True Blood aren't the first vampire books/tv series; they all have recycled aspects.

I do prefer shows that stick to traditional vampire lore. Except for the crumbling to dust and the bursting into flames in the sunlight, I can't really think of a way Buffy deviated from traditional lore much.

Now, everyone hates Edward Cullen. But what's even worse than that is a copycat.

Could Stephanie Meyer's main character that made her millions be a rip-off?

i think so, and here are some similarities.

1) They both lurk around like stalkers.
2) They both are vampires who don't eat humans.
3) The hair. It's pretty similar. ick. Angel! 😀

What do you think? (And do you see other similarities?)

Angel > Edward

I don't see many similarities between Angel and Edward. It's more likely that Edward is a response to the general stereotype of "vampires with a conscience", fighting against the demon inside but wanting to be good, that popular culture is so fond of, rather than directly influenced by Angel. Think about all of the vampire characters that fit this description; Mick from Moonlight, Louis from Anne Rice's novels, Angel, Spike, Edward, Mitchell from Being Human...Bill from True Blood, Stephan from Vampire diaries...

This idea of the evil vampire with a soul or conscience trying to do good and falling in love with a human girl is not a new story. Edward's interpretation is not new by far the most bland.

People really like the idea of an evil vampire being redeemed by his love for a woman, or giving up his evil ways for love of her. The idea that a vampire can fight his true nature and change and be good is a compelling story, and it's re-told over and over in vampire stories.

In the end, vampires are simply metaphors for larger issues, in Spike's case the ability of a man to change for love of a women (to be who she deserves), with Edward, it's about love triumphing over humanity (Bella chooses death instead of life in order to be with him). With Angel, it's about the capacity of a man to change for the better despite the inherent "evil" inside him. In Buffy, vampires are metaphors for teenage issues

Really? I don't feel that way at all. First off I don't think she would have even been around this long if she had no talent. It is not like she started for her sex appeal she started when she was young. It is not like she is a Megan Fox although i like her in Jennifer's Body she is not casted to bring the sexy to a cast so I don't see another reason why she would have gotten all these jobs. Twilight is nothing to base anyone's acting on. If you did you would say everyone sucked because it is not an acting movie it is more for entertainment if anything. She did break out in The Runaways the girl is only like twenty and she has done more movies than quite a bit of people that speaks for itself. You may not personally like her but she keeps getting work she does as many movies as Sarah these days like two a year.

So what if her personality is a "wet mop". I think it is refreshing when everyone tries to be all bubbly and other stuff like they showed on that E countdown like your rep said it comes across as fake and annoying. Why be the same? Her friends and people she is around says she is a trip. I don't think just because your an actress you have to go around laughing and smiling all the time. I wouldn't if I was her because of all the people that are hating on me anyways. I would be like I know you don't care about my interview anyways. But this is off topic.

When I saw JB's hair in Torchwood I didn't think to compare it to Angel, but to DT's Doctor.
I've heard that Stephanie Mayer named Edward after Mr. Ferrars, the character from Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility.

Apparently, she's a huge fan of Jane Austen. Now, how can this huge fan of Jane Austen, who created this strong and independent characters that are women, can create Bella? :/
