So today I was reading my favourite comic book ( Jughead's double digest  ), and I came across an advertizement for a new "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" graphic novel and to be perfectly honest got REALLY disturbed. For one, because they have made the beloved character into a manga version (it's so wierd!), but mostly because of the advertizement itself:

(Sorry about the small picture, the "enlarge image" link wouldn't load)

Now, if you look closely you'll find a lot of things and even at first glance the mere SIZE and proportions of this character disturbed me.

1) She is tall and looks like she has an eating disorder. Her arms and legs are too long and LOOK AT HER!!! To me at least, I find that size just unhealthy, I'm appalled that a company that writes these comics to an audience including young children would make her that size; what message is that sending to a 8 year old girl who loves Sabrina comic books?

2) The very position she's in looks like something out of a XXX magazine. Even if you look at how her legs are spread it's a classic, but very suggestive pose.

3) Her outfit. She's wearing kneehigh-tie boots, a shortshort miniskirt, and a tank top. And if you look closely, there is a pair of cherries on her shirt- not sure why this was put there but concidering what cherries tend to symbolize I'm surprised it's not stars or something.

Maybe I'm just going crazy, but to me I found this ad a bit creepy. If I was even reading a teen magazine or something I wouldn't be surprised, but a comic book? I'll try and get the actual ad scanned/posted (it's easier to make out if it's larger), but I had to post this and get your opinions on it.

My main tiff was with her skin-and-bones figure and totally unrealistic body, I just found it gross and don't think they should make advertizements like that for little kids, it's unneeded.

But again, maybe I'm just crazy... still very grossed though :sad0:

Aren't you glad ranting comes with the right to free speech?

You're right, that is disturbing. And just really scary. Especially the smile. This is for kids? I can just picture a terrifying new chain of manga-minions wearing t-shirts...

Very VERY glad! Lol ;-)
Im appalled... they cant go and change Sabrina. Especially for that sunburnt looking and not to mention promiscuous character. I mean come on... its pathetic!

p.s that’s a great place to put her pussy *the cat*

I noticed that too! And since when does salem look like a cartoon furby? :-S
Well, firstly I should say that as an old school comic book fan I really hate to see any classic characters "manga'ed" up. There was a tendency for Marvel to do that a few years back with some of it's artists deciding to go down that route. Wolverine with cartoony eyes and big feet just doesn't look quite as threatening to me for some reason, hehe. Did these artists learn NOTHING from Jack Kirby?!?! 😉

Other than that I can totally see what your problem is, AS. That looks absolutely nothing like the Sabrina (comic or tv version) I know and as far as what the artist was trying to say... well, you have pretty much answered that yourself.

Just wondering though. Is the artist who did that cover also who is doing the interior art? I can't see the book lasting very long if he is.

While I get what youre saying, im taking offence at this part. I am very tall and very thin. Have been my whole life and there has been nothing unhealthy about me (up until recently but thats a different matter).

Saying its gross and unrealistic is a total insult to people like me who are naturally that shape.

As far as I know he/she is, I could be wrong, but I'd guess they're at least part of the design team, as the other pictures all look like the same character.

I'm sorry wicked, I obviously didn't mean to offend anyone. All I was saying is that I think that (given the picture) if you were to take those proportions only show the character standing up (and as a human of that age), it just looks to me like it wouldn't be balanced (like that it'd turn out her armspand wasn't her height or something- which is actually an oddly amusing fact if you've ever tried, but off topic) I'm not saying every tall and skinny girl has an eating disorder or isn't "right", or that there aren't perfectly healthy people out there who are that thin, all I meant was that the picture seems a bit off and that I wonder if any person would have her kind of proportions if she was made "real life", which is why I said I thought it was unrealistic.

As for unhealthy, I definitely understand that not every skinny girl has an eating disorder, and although I do find the character's size really thin (too thin at first glance), for all I know she could eat a few dozen burgers a day and never work out (😉). But she's not the only character in that comic that is that size, and I personally don't agree to having all the characters that thin, again because the books do appeal to such a young audience. If it were an older magazine or something it probably wouldn't bother me so much, but it is a comic book.

Really sorry if I offended you though, again wasn't my intention 🙁
