Everyone has been complaining that Giles didn't seem his usual competent self in Season 7. Yet, after watching some of the old episodes from Seasons 1 through early Season 6, I cannot help but wonder if he had ever been an effective Watcher. And that we were seeing Giles in Season 7 through the eyes of an adult Buffy, instead of a teenaged Slayer.

Though question, and I personally think that it's hard to tell wether he was the watcher he was suppossed to be.

I always thought that Giles was a good watcher, I think the only way he faultered in his job was caring too much for Buffy. I never thought of his faults in season six and season seven as a way of showing Buffy seeing him in a new light, but that's a very good way of explaining it.

i think he did an okay job, an not so regular watcher for a ot so regular slayer...🙂 like everyone else he prob has changed thru the years...

i think he was a wonderful watcher,he teached buffy in a weird way,but it worked,buffy was(is) a great slayer.

he wasn't the 'perfect' watcher like the council wanted. but then again neither was Wesley. Both were fired from the council....(or did Giles quit?). But Giles did a great job. He did everything he was supposed to and more. Just cause Buffy was a real ***** in season 7 doesn't mean anything.

I;m sorry it just pisses me off thinking about what they did to the character 'Buffy' in season 7..... terrible....

Giles was a great watcher. Considering buffy was the first slayer to have died twice and come back, he did the best he could in such odd situation.
He taught her to survive and deal with her fate, teaching her the sense of responsibility she showed until the end.
She also managed to live a lot longer than others because of his training and guidance. That shows his merit as her Watcher as well as the way he guided her into adulthood when she was brought back in Season 6. Sometimes he was harsh, but he never stopped being faithful to her, not even in season 7.

i think he was not as good because he was like a father to buffy obviously you know he made father decisions while he should have made watcher decisions and watcher decisions while he should have made father decisions, you know what im sayin?

Giles wasn't extremely effective as a watcher, but he was as a hero. He defied the traditional, defined role of the Watcher. He operated outside those boundaries, but did so for the greater good.

I think he was a good watcher and knew what his slayer needed to live. With time he was more like a father to her, but that's even better with me...

He was a good Watcher, but more of a father to Buffy. The Council didn't want him to get too emotionally attached to her, so they fired him. Plus, he was a little carefree in his ways of teaching. The Council didn't like that.
