Ok I was just outside looking at the stars thinking about buffy. The thought crossed my mind how old is faith, i was thinking she could actually be older than buffy.

I then continued to justify this theory by thinking of kennedy who was, i assume 18+ and she was still considered a possibility for being a slayer, even though it was less likely. Therefore at this age it must be possible for kennedy to be chosen.

This then lead me to thinking how old do you have to be before you lose the potential to be a slayer or where its impossible or at least improbably to become a slayer. I then began to think why are slayers always so young, surely someone older would be better suited to dealing with the stresses of being a slayer.

At first i thought maybe its because the shadowman thought it would be easier to control a younger girl or maybe the slayer has to be around the same age of the first slayer.

I then began to think if they have to be around the slayer why is the age range of potential a few years surely it should be more narrow. I then began to think of something i learned in psychology about a critical period, where children have to develop attachments or develop language before the end of the period otherwise they would be incabable of doing so.

So i thought perhaps its possible that there is a critical period in which you can become the slayer, maybe a young girl is the only person who could become a slayer for some reason unknown, maybe its connected to puberty or something.

This would explain why in the last episode of buffy we dont see any slayers who look above the age of 20, they're all quite young. Maybe the reason there are no older slayers or sixty year old slayers floating about, at least as far as we know is because they have already gone past the age of being able to become a slayer.

What do you think, i kind of like the idea of a critical period and I know thats a long thought process to reach such a small conclusion but thats me lol so what do you think?

I think the critical period is a good theory. It's also true that a young girl would probably be much more malleable for the watchers than an adult. Also, they usually separate the slayers from their families, and the mid to late teens would probably be the perfect time for that to occur. One question though: Why do you assume that Kennedy is older than 18? Just wondering. And I personally think that Faith is younger than Buffy, but I have no basis for that at all. 🙂

i really agree, xin rong. i think it's better, for the watchers, if the slayer was younger, as they are more likely to be able to control a younger girl. buffy was 15 when she was called, right? this is still a very young age, even by today's standards. younger girls are less likely to rebel or dismiss the Calling. we all know buffy isn't a normal girl, so this doesn't really apply to her.
but just look at faith. she was definetly over 18 when she became a slayer and she rebelled in a big way, to the point of turning evil. if she had become the slayer a very years before, maybe she wouldn't have gone down that path.
it's a good theory, xin rong, and it's really got me thinking!! :scratchch :thumbs_up

Actually Buffy was a normal girl...it's just time's had changed since the calling of the previous slayer...
I assumed kennedy was around the age of 18 because she was dating willow and it seems to me that willow isnt the type of person who dates people more than a few years younger than her.

I dont really think faith was older than buffy, I just think its possible

I dont really think faith was older than buffy, and i dont think she was younger either I am just undecided on the subject, I just think its possible for Faith to be older

I think Faith is a year younger than Buffy, meaning she would be 16 when called.

And Kennedy was supposed to be 19, because that's what's she was in the Bring on the Night shooting script.

I wonder if there are little old lady's running around nursing homes who got called after Willow did her spell 🙂

i don't know, but something just makes me think that faith is over 18.
there was no mention of her having a crucimentum, and she would have had to have one if she was called BEFORE she was 18, so the only thing i can think of is that she was called AFTER her 18th birthday.

and i have another question, this time about the alternate reality created by anya in 'the wish'
buffy didn't come to sunnydale, so therefore, she didn't die at the hads of the master when she was 16, the master killed her when she was 18, two years later.
would kendra still have been called to take buffy's place in this reality? kendra always seemed older than buffy to me, if not exactly more mature. this would make kendra a lot older, would she still have become the slayer? or would the powers of the Chosen One passed straight to faith in this reality?
and if they didn't pass to faith, could they have gone to kennedy? she always seemed, to me, the potential who would most likely have been called if faith had died sometime before 'chosen'
what does everyone else think about this?

Well, if she was 17 in season 3, she would've turned 18 in season 4. Either when she was in the coma, or jail. That's how I think of it.

I don't think Kendra would've been called after Buffy died in Bizzaro!Sunnydale necessarily. Could've been her. Or could've been Kennedy. Could've been anyone.

didn't someone mention faith being older than buffy? i think i remember someone saying something.
anyway, i think she acted a lot older then buffy, i always just thought faith was older than buffy, even thought eliza was actually the youngest person on set in S3. she had just turned 17. but i think she looks, and acts, far older than any of the cast, with the possible execption of giles! : rotflmao

I always thought that Faith was a year or two younger than Buffy. Didn't she mention something about dropping out of high school? I thought that she just acted older because she had a tough childhood, she wasn't wealthy and spoiled like Buffy was.

i remember her saying she dropped out iof high school:
faith (to willow and xander):wow, if i 'd had friends like you in high school...well, i'd probably still have dropped out, but i might have been sad about it.

there was no date given as to when faith dropped out of high school.
but waht about when buffy did her crucimentium? shouldn't someone have mentioned that faith was at least due to have hers, if she was under 18?
and also, i read a theory a few years ago, when S3 had just finished airing. this guy thought that maybe kakistos was faith's crucimtium, and her watcher was killed because she, like giles, wouldn't let her slayer go through it alone.
if this was the case, then faith is at least a few months older than buffy.

Good theory about Kakistos, I never thought about that. But isn't Kakistos too strong of a vampire to be for a cruciamentum? Didn't Buffy just get a run-of-the-mill vampire?

I think that Faith is about two years younger than Buffy, assuming that she was the same age when she was called that Buffy was. So Buffy turned 18 in her senior year, which was when Faith came. Faith would have been 16, let's say. Then Faith turned evil and went into a coma, so she couldn't have had a cruciamentum. That's what I always thought happened, but I could be wrong. And I doubt Giles would have let Wesley do the cruciamentum on her anyway, even if she was old enough. He saw how it turned out with Buffy. And you'd think that if Faith had already had hers, she and Buffy would have talked about it together.

ok, i don't think this topic will ever be solved!
maybe we should asked joss?
hey! anybody know joss whedon? :redwink:

My personal opinion was Buffy was born January 1981, and Faith was born sometime in 1982. Might be wrong, but that's how I always viewed the relationship in terms of age.

There were also all of these references to her being younger. For example Buffy calls her "Little Sister".

I always thought that was something to do with being the youngest slayer, not really having anything to do with their actual age.

Now that i think about it i think faith was older quite and simply because of the sexual experiences she has, I mean she was very knowledgeable about men and has done some kinky things for someone who may be 16/17 whereas buffy hasn't and she was 18.

Fair enough this may mean that faith is more permiscuous but still even if she started young i still doubt belw the ageof 17 that she would do something with a guy and a bullwhip

I still think that Faith was youner than Buffy. Just because she's really promiscuous, it doesn't make her younger. A lot of girls, especially ones like Faith, start having sex at a very young age. Faith didn't have a great life and a loving family like Buffy did, so she probably replaced love with sex. And being the slayer and all, she probably has some extreme/violent/kinky tastes. That doesn't make her older than Buffy.

Not for a lot of people, especially someone like Faith. Age doesn't equal sexual experience.

I agree, not saying it's very common for someone that age to have that experience but it definitely occurs anyway. For me it feels like Faith is younger than Buffy, I don't know though, 'cause they also are in an age where it can be very hard to decide what age someone has and have very different maturity.

Did it really? I thought Kennedy was the same age as all the other potentials (15.) In the episode "Potential" when Buffy takes the girls to a demon bar, Rona says, "how much blending in a bunch of 15 year olds in a demon bar can do?" Kennedy and all the other girl pretty much just smile and nod, so I assumed she was the same age as the rest of them. But, you know what they say when you assume something, I could be wrong. 😉

Wasn't Kennedy the one talking about how she thuoght she might be to old to be called? Which would also indicate that she was older than the other potentials..
