The BBC is currently facing criticism for their casting choice in the current remake of The Elephant Man, where Stranger Things‘ Charlie Heaton (Jonathan) will play Joseph Merrick.

Merrick’s story has been frequently adapted, most well known in David Lynch’s 1980s movie The Elephant Man, starring Anthony Hopkins, with Jon Hurt as Merrick. In film, television, and plays, Merrick has been played by actors who are able-bodied. The British disability equality charity Scope has called out the BBC for continuing this pattern by choosing to cast the Stranger Things actor rather than a disabled actor, according to ET Canada. “It’s disappointing that a disabled actor has not been cast in the remake of The Elephant Man, as it’s one of the most recognizable films to portray a disabled character,” said Phil Talbot, Scope’s head of communications.

Talbot brought up the fact that, in the film industry, there’s a constant lack of diversity when it comes to hiring disabled actors in the first place, with studios still not working to make roles accessible for disabled actors. “Disabled actors still often face huge barriers to break into the business. Not only are the roles few and far between but castings and locations are often not accessible. […] There is a massive pool of disabled talent being overlooked. The creative industries should be embracing and celebrating difference and diversity, not ignoring it.”

A BBC spokesperson responded, saying, “The Elephant Man is an iconic drama that has had an important role to play in highlighting changing attitudes to disability and we are currently in the process of casting disabled actors in a variety of key roles.”

Sure.

When it comes to narratives about disabled people, many of us who are able-bodied tend to make excuses or hand-wave the issues in some ways, because we like the end product, tell ourselves that hiring a disabled actor would be “hard,” and design straw man arguments like “so we should just grab any disabled person and put them in a lead role?” No, you should hire trained disabled actors.

I don't get it. Surely, finding an actor with as many tumours on their body and face would be impossible, so it seem as though they are saying any disabled person would do. There is such a variety of disabilities a person can have, so I don't think it makes sense to think of disabled people as one large group.

Ruddy lunacy to do a remake of The Elephant Man in this era, just think of all the packaging needed for all that make-up
no reference to waste management there.

I love you hahahah
I'm so tired of this whole "lack of diversity" crap. Seems like people are always looking for a reason to complain these days. I blame it on Caitlyn Jenner, the BLM movement, and the #MeToo shriekfest. EVERYBODY is looking for a reason to whine about something. Example: people are upset that Piers Morgan disagreed with Cosmopolitan putting a morbidly obese woman on the cover...they say he's "fat shaming." Well, a 300 pound woman does NOT belong on the cover! C'mon now! But no, we're supposed to protest because Piers told the truth. Jesus.

There's too much diversity these days. Just keeping it real. 😉

They should cast a disabled actor. It's double standards if they don't. Hollywood dug its own hole here and now they can lie in it. In the [exact] same way its no longer ok for an entirely straight white cast to feature in a show, it's no longer ok to have an entirely able-bodied cast.

I look at Buffy, which is recently criticized - the actors were available and noteworthy at the time of airing. Simple as that. This new generation of internet whingers have said its not ok to use the actors that are available, talented, popular or going to pull a crowd. "They" (being those @Amber Bunny Slippers has named plus others) have decided that every show must be diverse.

So, if that is the case then it must work across the board, not just for coloured and gay actors with twitter.

It's not impossible. There's a famous actor called Adam Pearson with many tumours on his face who starred in Under the Skin with Scarlett Johannsson, and he was fantastic. He is also an advocate for disabled actors.
So they do exist. They just don't sell movies.

Considering the current social climate, it would be a radical act to cast only straight, white actors. 😂 Hollywood can suck it, for all I care. I loathe hypocrisy, and yes, they dug their own grave with all of this "diversity" crap. Coming soon: a Roots reboot...with only Asian actors. Because diversity is SO important, and who says that an Asian actor can't portray an African slave?! To even imply such a thing is racist, right?

There was a series on tv here a few years ago called "You Can't Ask That" there were a number of people with facial differences happy to appear on screen, and that is just in one state of Australia.

The movie could have open casting and surely find someone suited to the role.

Plus, offer them the same pay as Charlie Heaton, if not we better wage a hashtag war against the pay gap.

I have found the link for "You cant ask that" on youtube but I doubt It works in other regions.

But does what Merrick had really count as a disability? Besides which Hurt's performance was wonderful in the original film and did nothing but positive things. That had nothing to do with selling a movie besides his appearance in Alien Hurt was a virtual unknown at the time. It was just great casting simple as. And once again I don't want another Elephant Man.

Slightly off-topic, but THIS performance always elicits cheers from me. Brillance. ❤

We should go back to boys playing women roles and white dudes in black face if authenticity doesnt matter

Not quite the same thing.
I take your reasoning Mr Trick, so how about asking why a white guy was the actual Elephant man? or was it a black guy with white make up?

Sorry about that Mr Trick but your pull down states your location as London UK.

Yeah I know. Just never got round to changing it. Studied there for awhile.
I've visited the place many times but the closest I went to living their was Harpenden, it was close to so many haunted places, as I used to be a ghost hunter I was well impressed.
