So I was reading the article 10 things you didn't know about Eliza Dushku and I was "shocked" when I read this:

(...) But she nearly landed the leading lady role in the Tobey Maguire Spider Man days.
She auditioned for the role of Mary Jane Watson, and got as far as a reading with Maguire, though the part eventually went to Bring It On co-star Kirsten Dunst.

Do you guys think this is true and do you think Eliza could have made a better Mary-Jane than Kristen Dunst?

I also found Toby's screen test and I'm wondering if the brunette is actually Eliza (probably not, but it's worth a look 😛)

Auditioning doesn't exactly mean "nearly landed the leading lady role". I definitely think Eliza would have made that movie better, but I can't really see them casting her in that part.

Not really.

In the movie they turned Mary-Jane into a cute girl-next-door type and I don't really think Eliza is that. She can play sweet but I guess Kirsten Dunst is more believable (not that I really liked her in the role).

But Mary-Jane as a gorgeous party girl with hidden depth (like in the comics)? Yeah, Eliza would be great casting for that.

I still think the weakest point of those first three Sam Raimi movies are the casting for Peter Parker and MJ, everything else was great.

If I remember correctly, I read that she went and auditioned WITH Tobey Maguire as a favor to him cause they were friends. They were both in the movie This Boy's Life as kids. I don't think she was ever serious about trying to get the part. I do think that she doesn't fit the MJ that they wanted in the movie, KD was not great in them either though. It's possible that it is Eliza in that test footage.

Yeah she's a good actress but the MJ part as written in Spiderman would have been wrong for her, but I guess if they changed the character a little bit that might be different.

I think that in Sam Raimi's Spider Man, Mary Jane is the weakest character. I think that is the reason I started to dislike Kristen Dunst. The character is so shallow and lifeless. There is no spice in it. Mary Jane plays Damsel in distress all through the movies and Dunst is perfect for that.

Eliza could never play a Damsel in Distress. The closest she did was in True Lies and there she was helpful. Her kick ass attitude is too strong. I hate to typecast her, but I just don't see her playing this ditsy useless blonde in a movie. She is better than that.

I think that is harsh on KD. I think she plays sweet girl next door types very well and she is very likeable in those films I think. Besides when you have James Franco onscreen calling her shallow is a bit much😉

KD is really good in The Bachlorette. I think that's the name. lol.

You are right. IT is harsh. I just hate characters that do nothing. In the new Spider Man Movies Emma Stone at least does something. Well... her character was written like that.

You are right. My impression is just that... when I see her now... I link he face to Mary Jane being this girl that screams a lot for Spider Man to save her. Is there other movies where she plays a more rounded character?

Bring it On? That's all I can think of

Sure but that character is a crucial part of the story as the love interest. And do think KD injects her with lots of charm and the character does at least have a sense of morality.

@Fuffy Baith She's been good in many things, but then not so good in others. Not heard of that film.

As far as I can see Kirsten Dunst's MJ is like this monster, never mind that she's useless. She totally leaves that guy at the alter in Spider-Man 2 and we're all supposed to cheer?

Urgh, I just thought 'wow, that was kind of a bitch move'. 🙁

Can't picture Eliza in the role, but honestly that might just be because I haven't seen her in it. She might've done a fine job of it. For me the problem is picturing her (or Dunst) having chemistry with McGuire (clearly others are seeing things I don't in him). All in all, Spiderman is not my superhero of choice but I did watch the first movie with McGuire and it would have been nice to see Dushku in it for sure.

Well there is a brief scene in the first movie where we see him shirtless after he got bit, and he got in good shape for that role. I wouldn't say hes a good looking guy he's ok. But he does good playing the goofy, science nerd of Peter Parker and the charm of Spiderman, and that's really cute. But yes they didn't have a lot of chemistry. And neither did MJ and Harry Osborne, besides the fact that they were both good looking people. lol. Maybe if it was Eliza there would have been more chemistry, since they knew each other for years (and Eliza)

I think she might have been commenting on what a bad actor McGuire is (which he is😉) rather than anything to do with his looks, but once again you have your mind in the gutter😀

Oh well she said there was a lack of chemistry and didn't know what people see in him. I thought that meant why they would be attracted to him. My bad. Sometimes I'm just shallow. Lol
